There seems so much debate on here but it is all unnecessary if we stop and see the difference. Every martial art is designed to defend oneself, whereas the MMA/cage fighters training is designed to win bouts and matches. I tried Karate but it was to hard, a lifetime of training, and a true lifestyle. All about respect and seriousness. I couldn't even joke with my sensei, he was oldschool. It was very disrespectful. So I always felt uncomfortable around him he was really strict. No talking or anything. That's why I think MMA has been so popular. Gives acces to martial arts without adopting the lifestyle. More occidental teachers, easy going. You learn a few things and you leave. Not so serious as tradition.

@Freestyleartclub This is where you are wrong. sure katas are pointless in a real fight. but what a kata teaches you is the basic forms of different strikes, kicks, blocks, etc. look at it this way, if you know what every block, every punch, every step, every strike is used for in many katas, and you know how to use those strike or what may have you in a fight effectively, thats where a martial artist is dangerous.

From the opening Kata to the closing Kata I was uplifted to see my art brought to life on the screen. Lush settings and period culture combined to take me to early 20th Century Manchuria. This movie has no computer generated images, no fly-by-wire gymnastics and no jump-spinning-sumersaulting nun chuckku routines. A must-see for all Dan in our dojo!
@GoJuRyu09 Osu! I just learned San Sei Ryu kata over the weekend. The thing with karate is the low belt levels make it seem kind of rudimentary but as you get further you see how powerful goju is. I love it!
they do the same kata as what we do. at 1:47 its just a breathing technique, breath through your nose and out the mouth, its all in time with your body moments, and the one at 2:13 is what we call rotating palms but others may call it different, and theres another one in there that we have to do for a 3rd dan, :) i enjoy watching this movie
@MsEmm22 This form of breathing called "ibuki" is achieved by tightening all the pelvic and abdominal muscles while exhaling with an open throat, hence the characteristic sound. Instead of breathing with their shoulders, karateka breath with their abdomen.

The reason why traditional martial arts are so effective is because they've been formed,perfected, and passed down longer than you have lived. Every martial art is designed to defend oneself, whereas the MMA/cage fighters training is designed to win bouts and matches. I tried Karate but it was to hard, a lifetime of training, and a true lifestyle. All about respect and seriousness. I couldn't even joke with my sensei, he was oldschool. It was very disrespectful. So I always felt uncomfortable around him he was really strict. No talking or anything. That's why I think MMA has been so popular. Gives acces to martial arts without adopting the lifestyle. More occidental teachers, easy going. You learn a few things and you leave. Not so serious as tradition.

@Freestyleartclub This is where you are wrong. sure katas are pointless in a real fight. but what a kata teaches you is the basic forms of different strikes, kicks, blocks, etc. look at it this way, if you know what every block, every punch, every step, every strike is used for in many katas, and you know how to use those strike or what may have you in a fight effectively, thats where a martial artist is dangerous.

But Muay Thai isnt the best style either, there is a lot a openings and gaps in Traditional Muay Thai's defense. @Freestyleartclub dude. chill out. if you actually compete. You'll get what I'm saying. Its the fighter, not the style. Cuz after a certain amount of training, its all the same. A front kick is still a front kick. A joint lock is still a joint lock. And some opinionated article isnt going to change that. So unless you are this world class martial artist, you shouldnt really be talking.

@DanTheShotokanKid If you watch a TMA class, and I don’t care if it is Tae Kwan Do or karate , 90% of them are the same. They don’t have “training”. They have “class”. The students stand in rows, with a senior student in front, leading them in exercises and stretches, as a warm up to their class. Next, they might do kicking drills in the air or do katas (forms). Frequently, the students get in a straight line and a senior student holds a kick target.

If you have twenty students, each student kicks one of twenty times.In a fight gym you work the bag anywhere from four to ten rounds per day. And every kick or punch is just you. Every single round in a pro gym is spent working on fighting, training, refining, and honing the skills and techniques one needs to fight and win. In a TMA class, you also do forms and drills and all sorts of things that have nothing at all to do with fighting. In fact, when I used to go around fighting in TMA gyms, I always found it strange that during practice they did the flying-monkey-tiger stance, but when they sparred they just kickboxed, badly.

My two theories on people who believe in secre traditional martial arts are: First, emotionally, they are still eleven years old and need the magic. Or, by admitting that the top rungs of martial arts are impossible to reach, they relieve themselves of responsibility when they fail to reach that level. I don’t understand how any traditional martial artist; karate, or other, believes they could stand up to these guys who has over 200 fights. karate monkeys does not have brain

That Kata is Sanchin no Kata. It is taken from mainland white crane kung-fu. This kata develops internal power and makes the body strong.

It is called ibuki respiration. By that, you can push more oxygen to your blood and for a short time, your muscles work better. I used to do that when I did karate years ago and it had such a horrible voice like in the movie:D It wasn't the best for a little girl, I shocked my parents everytime I praticed at home..

@plasmavox Kurosawa never did martial arts movies. Yojimbo and SevenSamurai are period dramas with samurai in them, not martial arts. This movie is about as poetic as the martial arts genre can get, save for Hero. And there is no best martial art.

I LOVED this movie! As you can tell by my username, I am a Goju Ryu practicioner. I teach it, live it, breathe it, love it. From the opening Kata to the closing Kata I was uplifted to see my art brought to life on the screen. Lush settings and period culture combined to take me to early 20th Century Manchuria. This movie has no computer generated images, no fly-by-wire gymnastics and no jump-spinning-sumersaulting nun chuckku routines. A must-see for all Dan in our dojo!

@GoJuRyu09 Osu! I just learned San Sei Ryu kata over the weekend. The thing with karate is the low belt levels make it seem kind of rudimentary but as you get further you see how powerful goju is. I love it!

they do the same kata as what we do. at 1:47 its just a breathing technique, breath through your nose and out the mouth, its all in time with your body moments, and the one at 2:13 is what we call rotating palms but others may call it different, and theres another one in there that we have to do for a 3rd dan, :) i enjoy watching this movie

@MsEmm22 This form of breathing called "ibuki" is achieved by tightening all the pelvic and abdominal muscles while exhaling with an open throat, hence the characteristic sound. Instead of breathing with their shoulders, karateka breath with their abdomen.
