Lions actually hunt buffalo quite frequently. It would all depend on the size of the pride and the availability of other prey species. You make it sound as though the lions are fearful. That is not the case at all. Yes, buffalo can do some serious damage to predators, but nothing is off the menu for lions. In some parts of southern Africa there are prides that hunt little else.
