Too bad you did not have a high speed video camera. From 9 seconds to 10 seconds there is just one big flash of light. IT should have been at least from no bang to the flash at least 5 seconds to see the explosion expand and that would have been way cool.

I used to do this stuff but a big balloon went off as we were sending it up with another balloon filled with helium and we had cannon fuse attached to a cigarette. It went off about 4 feet from my ear and I still have a ringing in my ear.

Acetylene by itself is not that explosive. Mix it with oxygen, and it's highly unstable, with an incredible amount of stored energy. My shop teacher in high school did a demo lighting up two small balloons. One had just acetylene, and burned with a puff of orange sooty smoke. The other was oxy-acetylene, and took all the hair off his arm and cracked a window.

Before filling the bags I spray the inside down with some 409 or other spray cleaner. The liquid conducts electricity and so dissipates any static. You may not have a problem with static for 100 times, it's the 101 that you'll remember :^).

Were they really in plastic bags or was the Acetylene pumped into the caravan to mix with the oxygen and then detonated so to speak. It wouldnt be hard to do because of the massive percentage from the lower explosive limit to the upper explosive limit of acetylene gas. Plus like TehMG said, one accidental static charge would have meant almost certain fatalities when placing them together in the caravan.
