The Suvla Bay landing was actually a British landing force. The Bristish 1Xth Corps made up mainly of 10th Irish Division and 11th Northern Division and led by Lt General Stopford.
The landings were actually quite succesful with little opposition and few casualties.
It was the inept leadership of Stopford and the failure to move out of the beach heads to Capture the heights and support the ANZACS at ANZAC Cove that allowed the Turkish reinforcements to arrive and then the casualties began.
my brother sang this on his stag night with a local band,he was a soldier who had come back from war only a few months before and he,d seen and done some things to the enemy that troubled him and he sang it with such emotion,i never forget that night every time i hear this.
Once again ,as so often happens with his magnificent songs, no mention of Eric Bogle. From Peeebles he emigrated to Australia and after various careers finally found his calling as a songwriter/performer."The Band Played Waltzing Matilda "and No Man`s Land 2(known as The Green Fields of France /Willie McBride) are only two of his many superb compositions regarding the futility and hopelessness of war. While Ronnie D. undoubtedly makes a very fine job of this cover version, Eric` is magnificen t
Some of the folk are missing the point. The words of this song do not glorify war; but show its utter futility and stupidity. This Song is not about 'look how well they did'. It is more, 'what was it for?' Brilliant song, and superbly sung by Ronnie.
Totally agree, fundamentally written as an anti-war song. Is there ever glory in war ? I think not, just death and destruction for the masses. And perhaps (sic) glory for the politicians Bush and Blair !!!!
You are so right. Every war is the same. Ordinary people are conned into thinking they are right, and good fathers, sons, brothers, are trained to kill and die. Then when it is all over, the politicians sort it out at a peace conference. Thirty years later, you start to find that your own crowd were guilty of war crimes too. It is all so sad. Such a waste of life.
So does that apply to the patriots of so called 'enemy countries'? Sorry, but I do not think this song is about patriotism. I think it is showing how stupid the endless killing game is. I live in Northern Ireland by the way, and we have twolots of patriots here. One on each side. Who is right?
This is a very well done video - enjoyed it. The song was written by a Scotsman about the Australian experience at Gallipoli in 1915 where about 8,000 Aussie's and Kiwi's were killed. Its appropriate that it should be sung here by The Dubliners, as about 3500 members of the 10th (Irish) Division died there, many with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. May they all RIP.
Well done Hare.5* to yeh.Arden cheers for the share.Best version of Matilda I've ever seen.Does give you a proper reminder of the price that has often been paid for freedom.
The loss at Gallipoli was horrendous! Just listening to this song brings it home. Luke Kelly's wonderful instrument of a voice gives this great anti war song a poignancy you don't often hear.
God bless the men who died for they shall not grow old as we that are left grow old age shall not wery them nor the years condem as with the going down of the sun and in the morrning we WILL REMEMBER THEM, with thanks from the UK
Could an Austrailian/New Zealander help me out here. The battle scenes look like they are from a 1940/50s vintage movie. Does any one know what it was from? Some forgotten title? Also, my recollection is that Suvala Bay was a British operation and that the "diversion" was an attack out of Anzac Bay. Ultimately the beacheads joined, but the screw-up at Suvla was a British operation.

Gallipoli was one of the most uneeded conflicts of all time. Young Turks .Irish ,Scots,Australians, N Zealanders etc were slaughtered because of the incompetency and ignorance of politicians and the ruling classes
william1958,why do you say it was uneeded , its ok in hindsight to say that, the cream of allied youth died in that war.gallipoli ,if it had worked ,everyone would of said great etc, see you didnt mention the british ,more of them were killed than any other allied participant,it could of worked but for some bad decisions, the otterman empire knocked out of the war, russian navy ,use of the dardenelles, took pressure off the western front etc,
the whole war ,from a british point of view could of been avoided, all our involvement was to do with the defence of belgiums neutrality, which the germans marched over,so we were in ,we had no choice then, no one forsaw the carnage ,without us ,germany and its allies would of taken france, germany with its war mongering kaiser, would of had use of french ports and colonies and would of dominated europe and threatend our links to the empire, and ourselves,so it had to be fought regretably
and as for our allies and cousins the aussies and new zealanders, they were all volunteers, many british born or a generation away, like the british ,your sent were your sent, the chances of surviving on the western front were just as bad or worse than the gallipoli campaign so it didnt matter were they were sent, the chances of being killed were great werever you were
australia, new zeland and turkey will be always friends, so sorry for you guys but history can build also friendships between nation they fight before.....and the band played still waltzing mathilda , very nice song, it says everything. turks likes the anzacs
