Your right tournament of lies was not in Yu-Gi-Oh probably in some other shoenen anime though. They like to have a lot of tournaments. Yu Yu Hakusho too. Genkait tournament, Dark Tournament, Makai tournament.

well, if you think about it, all these tournaments were organized as a cover for something else entirely. Duelist Kingdom was Pegasus attempt to get the Puzzel, not to find the number one duelist. Battle City was organized to flush out the Rare Hunters and Marik - again, not to find the number one duelist. Then the Grand Championship was yet another attempt of Kaiba's to be number one, but yet Yugi didn't enter... wonder why? XXDDD
