It has to with funding and stuff. Manned space exporation is incredibly expensive, and since the space-race with communist Russia ended following the moon-landings there hasn't been enough money to go on manned missions to the Moon or Mars or anything. And there is very much research and science you can do in low orbit, and should do, before building bases on the Moon or Mars or anything anyway: )

Aditionally, NASA scientists do not think there is intelligent life in many solar systems, all evidence we have says that life is possible in some, and even fewer that are likely to have intelligent life, but yes, there is very little doubt that there is intelligent life out there somewhere, but these equations and experiments are public knowledge. Yes, NASA does believe in extraterrestrials. Now let the social dislocation begin.

Let's just say NASA does know that the "face" is actually an artifact of some type. Do you REALLY think they are going to let all of us, the sheep, know about it? I mean really. What would that do to religion? It would potentially disrupt society. It could mean chaos, who knows. It would be a devastating blow to our way of thinking. Some unknown reason Americas manned space program was junked? It wasn't junked just scaled back and that was done because of money. It costs allot of money to go to space and with a war going on it wasn't surprising that the public lost interest in space and politicians wanted to score points with their constituents so one senator names Proxmire canned NASA ambitious plans like setting up bases on the moon and going to Mars. I saw a documentary on this, where they took another picture of that 'face' with a better camera with higher resolution at a time of day (on mars that is) with better lighting- and it was just a normal random rock. It had no resemblance to a face at all.

@Galhar with the face aside I bet the documentary brushed off the smaller structures too.But then again finding geometric measurements is more astounding than finding a face, since the likelihood that someone put the structures there is more obvious than a face coined "optical illusion". I won't be surprised if the documentary was ushered with the help of the government.
