  • I had a greater swiss mountain dog, his name is Joey. We had him for about 12 years, when his hind legs slowly stopped working due to spinal cord damage (vet told us this is usually what happens to large breed dogs). We had to put him down about 3 weeks ago, I love ya buddy

  • Just adopted a 9 week old Bernese mountain dog he's such a love ! And he fantastic with my choc.lab and my two year old baby.

  • yeah i wouldn't freak out just cause they say low life span and health. my beagle (a breed that is supposed to be super healthy) had the same and even more allergies than i did plus bold legged is bad for someone who loves to run. Each dog and person has their own genetics that makes them healthier and weaker than others in different ways :) I knew a 12 yr old Great Dane, I'm sure a Berner could last that long too!

  • @nickmullaly this is the average. unfortunately, this is due to a high rate of cancer.

  • @nickmullaly yes but it is the average

  • if any of you are willing to travel a bit! my friend ( bernese mountain dog breeder) has 3 males left and 3 females!!! 800$ each! near sherbrooke quebec though

  • i have one too but that doesn't change the fact that they usually don't live more than 9 years average....i had two before the one i have now! ;)

  • @nickmullaly The narrator said 6-8 years is the average. Do you know what an average is? Your dog could live to be 14 years old, but that won't have any impact on the average lifespan of a breed.

  • Worst voice-over of ALL animal series, I feel like I'm a 10year old he's talking to with his wannabe Disney voice.

  • I have one named Hiedi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wht food brands u guys recommend for bernese dogs? mine is 8 months old...

  • @nickmullaly I really wanna believe that, mine is 8 months old in 3 days :) ...what food brand u prefer btw...?

  • my gran has 20 LOL

  • @SUPER3325 Seriously? I love them! We are getting one in april :)

  • me and my gf just broke up and im gonna miss koda a beautiful 3yr old male as much as her

  • Our Favorite Breed!

  • I have one of these beauties. She's the only dog in the house and incredibly smart, so she acts like a person :)

  • so cute

  • my doggie yoko she is just the sweeties thing!

    she Bernese and so pretty!!!

all tho she has a foot problem and is very high maintenance i lover her to death shes my besty!

    <33333333333

  • I'm watching this with my 10 month old Berner (Eden) sleeping baside me- simply brilliant dogs- love them.

  • sooooooo prettyyy O.o

  • I LOVE bernese mountaind dogs

Im getting mine in the 2 of january! they are to be bron in november 1 and i can go choose one in the 30th of november!

  • The average you speak of is based on the fact that 60% of Bernese that die prematurely, die due to cancer between the age of seven and nine. These are the facts that people need to know.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! amo este programa! hace mucho no lo veia

  • i love my bernese mountain...shes the best dog in the world....i recommend everyone to get one.

  • First off as a breeder of Bernese NOT BURMESE Mountain Dogs (that drives me nuts...) I would like to make a couple of corrections to the video. First they are not black, tan and white they are black, rust and white. The longevity is not six to eight years. I have now been owned by thirteen BMD's since 1986 and have yet to lose one that young. Maybe I am breeding a some what excellent line.. I think so. I do really like the video and I appreciate the work that was done to put it together.

  • @riverstead1 well it is an average...most will live longer but thats what happens with averages...

  • @mrwashur1991

that makes no sense at all. if "most" live longer, then the average is higher. Most Die younger too, some at 7months, 1yr, 3 yrs...all u need to look at is the bernergarde data base. i have a bernese, cancer is huge and as much as id like to say they live long...they dont

  • how weird, my dad got a burnese mountain dog pup 2-3 years ago and he never complained about it being hard to find 1.

  • They're rare? I knew someone that had 2 of em.

  • I want one of these dogs SOOOOO bad! I have always loved these big lugs!!!!!! My aunt owns one named Alexandria :)

  • omg I love this breed :3

  • I have had 2 BMDs. Best dog ever if you want a big strong loyal dog. Only downside is health issues. I lost Andy 6 months ago to cancer and I still miss him.

  • We have a Bernese and she is awesome. She is love on four legs. :)

  • Three years a young dog, three years a good dog, three years an old dog...anything after that is a gift from God...currently have two; one in the young dog category and one in the good dog category...lost one in the old dog category...still hoping for the gift from God category...got my paws crossed!!!!

  • 0:35 - That would be such a CUTE picture!!!

  • Nice

  • Bernese mountain dog is the greatest dog of all time i had one as a kid he was the sweetest dog ever!

  • I hate how they only have an average lifespan of 6-8 years, it makes me sad :( I have the loveliest berner girl ever

  • Hey 'thehomefront', it's great you have that opinion because at least you will never own a Bernese, never know how fabulous they are and no Bernese ever has to live with you. Oh, and by the way my Bernese lived to be 13! Enough said...

  • @thehomefront what a scumbag you are. people like you shouldn't be allowed to own dogs.

  • i no this shop in va the ski center and sometimes bring 1 over named leaf

  • amazing dogs...great with kids and other pets...very lovable and lazy...some can be very energetic though most are not..i have 2 and one is hyper as hell and the other is great and sleeps but plays as well

  • one of the must perfect dogs <3 ;D

  • i got one =)

  • me too :D

  • My friend has this dog & a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the exact same colors & similar markings. It's funny because it looks like mini-me

  • I love Berners they are my favorite breed (Then come Irish Setters, Australian Shepherds, Border Collies and German Shepherds; all the same)!!!

  • Wow! Now THAT is a handsome pup!

  • Hehe, I don't know bout you, but I don't agree with the loyalty part :-) Yes, they are loyal - but obedient, mjah. You've got to work with it more than with the more pleasing breed - it is an independent dog who doesn't consider it's owner words as God's just because :-)

  • Absolutely true. My brother has a Leonberger and before that, a Great Pyrenees. All had similar dispositions. If having your dog do tricks is a big priority for you, working dogs in general are not the route to go. But they are GREAT for families and small children.

  • @vibraharp226

they are smart, not like a border collie but love to please their owners, and since they are fatasses, a little cheese can go a long way...i tought mine a bunch of tricks using a clicker, so its jsut how much time u want to put in ur berner..

  • Still don't agree :-) Yes, they are smart (my berner could open doors at the age of 16weeks -tried earlier, but succeded at that age), yes, they looove and adore and really can jump on their tongue for food and also work for some play. But not for the owner's praise alone and "just because". They are independent and you need to work hard to show them that working with you is the best thing in the world. Very different from a labrador retriever which nearly by instinct thinks its owner is God :-)

  • @BernerAzuro

maybe I just got lucky with mine! haha no no but i know what u mean i take ur word!

  • Hehe, there's always those dogs which stands out :-D It is seldom you see berners in the high obedience classes, though it is possible, if you work for it :-) I am myself working to at least compete in the lower classes :-)

  • my buddy has one. shes almost 7 and starting to have hip problems. i want everyone to know that i love that damn dog

  • i have a bernese mountain dog he is skinney and strong and hyper his name is jackson

  • 6 to 8 years? thats not enough :(

  • that's because many die young because of hip dysplaysia. those that are healthy can live longer

  • That's not completely correct... The main problem in the breed must be cancer! A lot of berners can cope with hipdysplasia without any problems - I know of two, who have bad hips, which haven't got any problems at all.

But 40% of all berners dies from cancer.

  • so are the bernese moantain dogs the same as the great swiss mountain dog?just extra fur?

  • kind of but different temperment. but yes.

  • @nataliawasilewska97

they are very similar to newfoundlands, and do have a lot of newfoundland in them since they were crossed in the 1800's to increase size and improve temperament..they are one of the best breeds with children and tend to not have a mean bone in them!

-check out my berner his name is bear, he's 9months and one of the most perfectly marked berners

  • @amirjon thanks for the information.

  • It was only one newfoundlands dog that was crossed in with the BMD and it was in the 1950 - the breed first got a standard around 1900, take or give a few years ;-) There were problems with inbreeding due to the few dogs, which caused bad temperament, bad fertility and a lot more not-so-good-stuff. When the "accident" (as it was covered as) happened, the breederes decided to give the crossbreed puppies a chance and it was a succes :-)

  • @BernerAzuro

have u read jude simmons-the complete bernese mount dog?

  • Nope, I've read two danish bernese mountain dog books :-)

  • @BernerAzuro

can i get the names of those books?? if they come in english translation? im very interested in reading and learning more about the breed

  • No, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs get significantly bigger. I have a 7 month Bernese Mountain Dog and he is strong, but the Greater Swiss has a lot more muscle mass.

  • oh ok

  • i had a female Bernie for 9 years and she was absoloutely lovely and so friendly and the most dosile dog with children and so loyal , she died from cancer age 9 which is quite a good age for a bernie , i will always remember the good times we had with her, they are just fantastic dogs.

  • crazyforslash: "...had a female Bernie... she died from cancer age 9..."

Sorry to hear that; but for whatever it's worth? Berners were number three on our list of 16 breeds, before finally choosing Alaskan Malamutes for service dog work. Bernies, although absolutely wonderful dogs, do have a thing with longevity (unfortunately); otherwise they'd have given the Mals stiff competition.

I still admire this breed, though. (Never met a Bernie I didn't like, either!)

  • the best dog i have ever owned.... great great temperament and so so beautiful

  • A lovely, lovely breed, but with such a short life-span, it would be too sad to have one only to lose it in a few short years. :-(

  • my dog looks like that. .

but he doesn't have a tail and all black in the face. .

    :D

  • i love Burnese mnt dogs they are so big and beautiful!

  • i like ur name

  • My significant other and I have a Berner named Argus and he is, by far, one of the most fun, lovable, intelligent dogs I've ever known. He's non-stop entertainment and cuddling.

  • were do you live looking for a berner for a short movie if interested

  • I live in Iowa. Lol. A short movie? o.O Explain, please.

  • I'M going to have to back to you on that, the last time i told someone about a movie i'm doing someone stold it

try Paranormal Activity TRUE STORY I GOT PROOF

  • still looking? i have a berner and in the new ytork area.

  • do you have one that I can have by any chance

  • One you can have? what do you mean?

  • I have got a berner too :) And we are from Turkey! We all can be friends as berner owners :)

  • i have bernese moutain dog, name monty, he's adorable

  • do you have any more I really want one I'm doing an inde film and need one as well ,, help If you can

  • thats awesome u must be good owners

  • ??? maybe who knows, i guess it boils down to socializing them as pups

  • Hmmmmmmmmmmm i just would not want one around kids......

  • Apperently they are great with kids. Sorta like a newfoundland.

  • They are great with kids if they are socialized when they're young, otherwise they're too excitable. Lol. Ours is still a puppy at heart so he kisses, kisses, kisses all over unsuspecting kids. Lol!

  • I own one and he is amazing. He likes to play rough (tug a war) but when around small children he changes. Its like he knows that he has to be careful. weve had him around 5month old babies and he is like a giant stuffed animal, they'll rip his fur out and he won't even flinch and he's not even mature yet, he's only eight months old.

  • Why wouldn't you want a Berner around kids? They're soft, cuddly, gentle, and calm. They're perfect for children...

  • WANT

  • they are awesome. my neighbor has one :)

  • Mine too :) It's just a puppy but it's still a lot friendlier than their 6 year old lab...

  • My friend's Bernese Mountain is very cute and energetic.

  • i love the elevator music in the background....

  • @dracosemogurlfriend lol me too

  • I have two berneese. our lady is twelve years old right now and we just got her another puppy to kep her company after our other boy died a few months ago... I love the breed so much... :)

  • i have a bernese mountain dog mixed with a collie but it's fur color matches that of a german sheperds but he still has the whit mark on his chest and his face looks like a collie. when we got him he was sweet kind and wanted to interact in a frinedly way with everyone he see's but now when ever someone walks by he''ll just bark at the and try to pounse on them

i don't know whats going on so could somebody help me.

  • did yo uever get this fixed.,

  • yeah we did but it doesnt matter anymore he bit someone and we had to give him away

  • A Berner who bit someone! This is not a well socialized dog.

  • i love bernese mountain dogs.

    i dont have one :(

  • I just lost mine a few weeks ago and we had him till a great 11 years which many are shocked to hear. The most ive heard them live to is around 14. And they dont need snow they will adapt for example mine loved any beach and enjoyed lounging in the sun lol. Great dogs hoping to get another sometime this year.

  • how did u lose it??

  • Old age basically.

  • I have a berner myself. Like said below, these dogs are mountain dogs, Winter dogs. Wonderful dogs all the way :) Here in Canada it's fantastic, but don't even think about getting one if the weather is always hot in your area. These dogs suffer in the heat.

  • I live in Switzerland close to where the breed originated and I have had two Bernese Mountain dogs. They are the most wonderful dogs. As I teacher I took both of them to school everyday and the kids loved them. I was surprised to hear in the clip that they only have a life span of 6 to 8 years. In Switzerland the vets say that the average life span is 9 - too short but better than 6-8. Don't ever buy one if you don't live in a snowy area. They LOVE snow

  • I have 2 bernese they are the most loving funny boys you could wish for but they do need lots of time and attention, not a dog that can be happy home alone

  • We have 2 Berners and just lost one to lympo cancer this past Dec at age 3. His name was Hunter. Hunter did have health insurance and we did Chemo treatments. After 3 months it was time to let him go. We miss him but would do it again. Yes he was from a certified breed with no bloodline problems. Father was reconized @ westminster for best merit. You have to understand that they do not live long but the time you get with them is priceless.

  • They say about these dogs is..

    3 years a young dog

    3 years a good dog

3 years an old dog and

anything after that is a gift from God

  • Adopt animals from your local animal shelter, where there are puppies and dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds.

  • Great video

  • i rescued my Bernese from a puppy mill...too bad for him, he's allergic to water...when he puts his paw is it he keeps licking it till it bleeds =[ but he has meds now...its kinda of weird that hes allergic to water...we took him to a pet sitter and we told him he was allergic to water and she gave me a funny look hahah

  • it is almost entirely impossible to be alergic to water, since the body itself is more than 60% water....

  • im gettin a bernese in 3 weeks!!!!!!!! Can't wait

  • big berneese dog != berneese mountain dog :X

  • I love my Berner to death. It's so sad that they have a short lifespan, it's true when they say the good die young.

  • BEST DOGS EVER!!!! I had a Bernese Mountain Dog as my childhood dog, omg, she was the best dog a child could grow up with. So loving, so gentle, so sweet. so cuddly <3 <3

  • no, they look nothing like beagles.

they are their own unique breed, very different from beagles.

  • ??r u high?

  • my favorite dog

  • Gorgeous!

  • I have a four year old Berner and that is the best video I've seen yet on the breed. My dog is exactly as it's described here, in every way.

  • I so wanted one of these dogs but when I heard how much they eat (add that to Vet bills), I was like forget it. Still, I'd like a Greater Swiss Mount. dog or this one.

  • Anyone called 1Pittbullman perhaps shouldn't be looking to own a serious dog, regardless of their longevity. Why not get a shih tzu -get to be 15?

Bernese are beautiful natured, friendly and wonderful family members. It's not their fault breeders have left them prey to cancer. Otherwise they would reach 10 or more.

  • Berner owners would agree that you shouldn't.

  • gotta love them...bmd's have the best personality of any dog breed I know.
