I've loved space ever since I was a young lad. I've only just come across this poignant message and I think I have a new found respect and admiration for everything. The vastness of space and our miniscule presence in it is mind blowing when put in perspective.
I loved Sagan and I don't say this only because he has deceased but because i truly believe so that he was an artist of life, he was a poet and a humble saint.
''The pale blue dot'' by Carl is the most heart touching short piece of literature masterpiece the world will ever get.
@PoFFizdaMan You're in good company with Einstein & Sagan.
"The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend personal God and avoid dogma and theology. Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity." -- Albert Einstein
There are things that are infinitely bigger, but there are also things that are infinitely smaller. Everything is relative, remember? Still a very very cool video, but not a huge wake-up call to appreciate our home (although we should do that anyway, of course).
We are infinitely small. Our planet is not the center of the universe. From 4 billion miles away we appear to be a pale blue dot. And from further still...not even that.
However, we ARE in a privileged position. Because we are alive. Because we can make choices. We have the power to change things around us and within us.
The universe is vast, but also vastly empty and lifeless. Perhaps when you look up at the stars someone is staring back at you, but it is relatively rare.
I believe it is humanly impossible to fully appreciate how fantastically precious our time is on this planet.
I feel hope. I see a lot of people who never watched or payed atention to Carl Sagan, now, thanks to internet, are dicovering him.
Read his books, you'll love them. He was an intelligent man and a bright scientist. He also was the one to share his knowledge in plain words with ordinary people like us -not many scientists liked it. He made us love science and care about the world.
watch his movie(s) too. Contact is one of my absolute fav movies, simply for the messages it conveys. it blurrs that razor edge of faith and confidence. truly amazing movie. 2nd ONLY to the original Star Wars trilogy

Be a part of what I know.Welcome to my life. You have been selected to view the opening movie trailer of the movie Touch of Fluid. Remember I was here.
Like it or not, regardless of images of media input, the words of this video ring so sad and so true. To ignore them is to place ones mind in the sand of time and pray it's not there because you can't see it.
The bottom line here is to save this 'pale blue dot', our only home in the Universe. tvidie is right about our responsibility in taking care of each other and Earth.
About the corpses and stuff....well, in my own opinion, there's nothing wrong with that. I really didn't mind. But at least you have your point, Mr. JQisAwesome.
How ignorant are you people? This wasn't a video narrated by a filmmaker; this was a speech given by one of the most brilliant minds in history, Carl Sagan. He gave it during a commencement address; and his point wasn't overpopulation or politics.
His point is that the things we fight over on a national and world stage are absurd considering our place in the universe. His whole message here is that we have a responsibility to take care of each other and take care of this planet
Tasteless? Did you want the author to attempt to have the same impact on the viewer by showing someone stealing a candy bar? This video is not just for those who have heard or read the narration before, you narrow minded twit.
You can achieve the same impact by showing Hitler, or Nazis marching, or at most- footage of skinny holocaust victims. But no, he shows burned, charred bodies for over 30 seconds, then cuts to a mass grave of rotting corpses- tasteless. I absolutely stand by that. Totally, completely tasteless. No subtlety. It had LESS IMPACT because it didn't make you stop and ponder the evil of mankind, it just grosses you out.
The earth is no where near overpopulated. Have you ever driven through Nebraska or Texas. There's plenty of room. Also, did you know that the entire earth's population can fit inside Pensacola Florida? twice?!
overpopulation has nothing to do with how many acres of land we can fit massive amounts of people on. overpopulation has to do with how many people can be supported by the available resources. you could easily fit 100 times the earth's population in the U.S but that doesn't mean they can survive.
I agree with you on your comment...but uhh "easily fit 100 times the earth's population in the U.S" ... nah, that's 700 Billion people. Don't count on that.
He's right, we have to break free from our own home world. Our civilization need to master the technology of speed light space travel before our sun decided to stop shining or our planet running out of resources. Maybe we need around 2000 years to achieve that, who knows? Just never gives up hope my fellow mankind. I believe there is another planet out there that can suport life as well as our earth.
are you crazy? Do you know how big the universe is? Do you know how many thousands (and millions) of years it would get to get to another part of the galaxy? We can rest assured there is other life but it's safe to say there's no intelligent life close enough to us.
It is just wrong for you not to credit Carl Saga. if you had any class, you would change the title to "Carl Sagan - The Pale Blue Dot." what you did with a couple images was minimal at best.
We will never stop fighting one another until we truly understand we are truly all equal, we are all equally hear nothing changes that and nothing separates us, not religion, not race, nothing.
The term you might be reaching for is "speciesist". It's already in use. I fact, Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan have mentioned it several times, as has Dawkins.
For now! Who knows maybe we are the most intelligent being in our galaxy right now, and the other next intelligent being stil crawling in the form of microscopic bacteria in another planet, just like us a couple hundred million years ago

Carl said, "We are star stuff" and "a way for the cosmos to know itself."
All the atoms on earth and in our bodies came from supernova that blew up over 5 billion years ago.
Aren't we all just walking, talking stardust -- this cosmos become AWAKE and looking back at itself? -- and aren't we intimately connected to it all?
We are this wonder called life become AWAKE
Please enjoy the dance.
And ultimately there's nothing that separates us from others in this grand mystery. Please be kind.

I hope there is some life out there, somewhere in the universe.
Perhaps even in our own galaxy.
Maybe someday, we will at least have radio frequency contact through one of our satellites/observatories.
The universe is so enormous, we could probably never make physical contact.

And I am so glad that so many others are still inspired to love science even after his death.
He will be missed but he left a wonderful legacy behind.

Isn't it great that so many people remember him? When I saw your video first, I weeped. Then, I took Pale Blue Dot from the shelf. I'm re-reading it.
He was a great inspiration to me. I studied and loved science because of Cosmos. It changed my life, truly.
Thanks for this beautiful video, It reminded me of my roots -and I needed to be reminded.
Keep up the good work! I'll suscribe your chanel just in case you add something else.
