"The substance used as soap" is now often used as a companion, rather than as a replacement, of soap. It is usually the ashes of the burnt leftover/skin of rice grains (cant find the proper English word for it - sorry).
Traditionally it is best for removing oilly food-waste from plate / other kitchen utensils. (Given your extensive experience of Indonesian daily life, I believe you have alredy know this...:))
