My mom dislikes Kevin Spacey. Or at any rate has said she doesn't think he's all that as an actor. I think his work in this movie (and especially this final scene) explains it--Spacey is so note-perfect at playing depraved and implacable losers like John Doe that he unnerves her. His are not the villains of the movies of her youth, or for that matter the movies of my youth. (See, I get what you're saying, Mom. But you're wrong.)

I really love this ending, one of the best twist endings I've ever seen, but I just have one question: Does the person who commits one of the deadly sins have to be the victim, or can they be the perpetrator? Because if it's the former, then technically John Doe hasn't won, as someone has to kill David Mills now, and he doesn't get killed, he just gets arrested and it's implied he'll just do some jail time, but he won't go away for life or get the death penalty.
