thanks for posting this and other rare footage of a band that i loved The Move were one of those bands like the who and the Hollies defined the Mod trend in music besides The Beatles and Stones Troggs Small Faces all great its a pity that we have lost many of these bands to history so its great that you have shared this.
wonderful! picked up best of the move in a discount bin 15 yrs ago because i remembered hearing this song reviewed on the dick clark show back in the 60s and never forgot it with that one listen- get the Best of the Move and you will be impressed- oh and The Move who found much greater popularity in Britain than the states are considered to have later evolved into ELO via Jeff Lynne!
I don't like that bass sound ...actually I don't really like this at all, it was put on my account as 'Recommended'...but some like it and that's good
OK to settle Beatles comparisons, how aboout admit that the scrounging for the most insignificant Beatles outtakes is pathetic when bands like the Move are ignored?
Just about the coolest band out in those days, well, still are in my opinion, Chris Kefford facinates me, he has prescence as does Carl Wayne of course....happy days. Julian
I heard this on radio 2 and thought it was O.K. on YouTubing it I dialed in totally outstanding song Late sixties Britain music so cool . The music and bikes ruled . thanks for posting . john
Carl Wayne went to manage a club called Rebeccas(sp) in Brum - I played there when he was the bloke to speak to about gigs. Now sadly passed away I think.
Chris "Ace" Kefford formed the Ace Kefford Stand Kefford. They still play around the Midlands(I think) and are/were sh**t hot as you would expect of such a good musician.. Dont think Bev or Roy played with Gerry Levene. I only remember Bev with Carl Wayne and the Vikings. Roy Wood played with Mike Sheridan and the Night riders.
I did not know that every one in the group would be clean shaven. I was used to see who they looked in The Electric Light Ochrastra. It looked like ELO wanted to looking like men from an earlier century including the hair and their faces.
Well the only ones in this video who went onto ELO is Bev Bevan on drums and Roy Wood, third in from the left. In 1970, lead vocalist Carl Wayne left and that's when Jeff Lynne replaced him, thus creating the nucleus of ELO.
What I find amazing about The Move here is the showmanship of the band in general. Other groups should learn from this, all four performers in a line, stepping back and forth giving each member a highlight in the performance. All very talented but different in their way. It makes for a great show, The Beatles did the same, every song features talent from the different members behind great songwriting, with charisma. Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin based their stage act and music on this group.
Isn't it true daekeye1?! I went and saw Editors with my best friend at The House Of Blues out here in Anaheim, CA and lead vocalist Tom Smith took the spotlight the entire show while his bandmates were literally IN THE SHADOWS! I mean they were totally faceless! Band members don't have any BALLS anymore like we see here with The Move. The guitar player wanting to do what he wants, etc. That creative energy made the bands of the '60s so good, but also broke them apart!
Saw them in Bradford in the late 60s - fabulous and very underrated. Think Carl had a touch of laryngitis at the time of this vid as he did have a good voice. Last saw him at the Stables in Milton Keynes in 2003 when he was singing with the Hollies - he looked really well and was in great form but a little more than a year later (31/8/2004) he was dead. RIP Carl Wayne, sadly missed.
one day in 66 or '67 I heard this tune played as a "spotlight" song Dick Clark played on his show which then got rated by the kids. It received NO airplay in Seattle. A haunting melody and distinct style- I didn't hear the song or band until about 1990 when I found "Best of the Move" in a reject cd bin and promptly scooped up my prize, demonstrating some ELO roots. Great to see it here, thanks! Buy the cd if you can- worth it!
If I'm not mistaken, this was the one single that WLS (890 on your dial, Chicago) actually played a couple of times...unless someone nicked that middle piece and put it in another song!
What surprises me is what a democratic band they were. Everyone sings (and really well, given the abysmal monitorng electronics of the day), Ace Kefford gets the little lead jangle (of course, you may ask why the camerman couldn't tilt UP to see Ace's face, at least once during the broadcast...as an editor, I'm just amazed how lame older TV can be...), Trevor sings the "just about to flip your mind" piece...tres cool.
He was standing to the left of Carl in this vid--and was singing the falsetto highs in this song--Roy was there, definitely! Ace is singing the "flip your mind" part and playing bass--Trevor is playing guitar on the other end and adding harmonies, that was it.
Sadly, an unappreciated key to the initial British invasion! 995 of 1000 Americans have never heard of them. I wonder how many Brits have? And they had the foresight to acquire Jeff Lynne from Idle Race... and the rest, as they say, is history! Roy, Jeff, and Bev went on to form Electric Light Orchestra whom John Lennon dubbed as "a son of Beatles"...
Thank God somebody knows that this is an English band. The drummers name is Bev Bevan, and he went on with Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood when they became E.L.O.

I bought it...it's pretty good. Like his cover of "For Your Love" (not part of the original solo album, was from his years leading the Ace Kefford Stand).
roy wood is the second from the right...he didnt have any facial hair it took me a while to recognize him you can see him better in the "i can hear the grass grow" clip...the bassist rules o.k.
What a Gem! Dark Side Of The Move..indeed! Big Big Country future influence in the rhythm guitar section. Classic stuff!! Thanks for the forgotten memories!!
That's fine, but I'm in Canada - and I never even heard of these guys until a few years ago. When i found out what i had missed out on,I felt ripped off!

I guess it may have been too much for the guy, because he left the band not too long after this live bit was filmed. And no, to reply the previous post, he was a perfect supporting vocalist. No one could take lead duties away from the great Carl Wayne.
True, the strain was getting to be much on Ace. His mental health began to wane, and he quit the band. He was hospitallized shortly thereafter, but the band did visit him.
This is a classic with Roy's riff taken directly from Tchaikovsky's 1058 Overture - and for once Ace Kefford (bass)since a bit of lead with Carl Wayne... Fantastic clip, not as good as I Can Hear the Grass Grow from the same show, but definitely 2 thumbs up. Gives you an idea how exciting that 4-man front line was live.
It says there is an error. This happened the last time I tried to watch this too which was last week.

This is a classic with Roy's riff taken directly from Tchaikovsky's 1058 Overture - and for once Ace Kefford (bass)since a bit of lead with Carl Wayne... Impressive, because he sings better than Carl. Now why wasn't he chosen to be the lead singer of The Move instead? Overall, 2 thumbs up for this one! Reply if you agree

Fantastic clip, not as good as I Can Hear the Grass Grow from the same show, but definitely 2 thumbs up. Gives you an idea how exciting that 4-man front line was live.
