It's up to Threadless to design a "fair" contest. I think they like artists with big built-in fanbases since it brings more eyes and wallets to their site. Regardless, I think they privately determine the winner, so who knows how big a part the vote even plays.

Yes, it is a lot of money, and for that reason I think it is even more important to play fair - let the artwork do the talking. I should point out that it's not a "vulnerable voting system" like randyotter says-- Threadless is a pretty big, popular website that's been running polls and contests for some time now. This particular contest doesn't even show the current vote tally, nor the tallies of previous Bestee contests. I suspect they'll conduct the picking of the winner as they deem fit. If they WANT it to be a popularity contest, that is their choice, but don't blame the popular.

An incentive for artists who need it the most, helmed by a panel of judges would probably be nicer (and for all we know, maybe that's all it is and the public vote system is merely to make people feel more involved and keep them tuning in.)
