  • I have to play Samuel in a few weeks time. I'm desperately watching this over and over again, trying to learn it!

  • And im THE PIRATE IN THE BACKGROUND oh yeah you know ur jealous

  • you guys are all freaking amazing! were putting on theis production at my church, and I got the role of pirate king. Let me tell you, this guy, whoever the pirate King, is my inspiration!

  • @andyowens01 I was Samuel in a production of this and trust me, I sounded worse than Marc James.

  • @MrSamHargreaves I was also Samuel, and after hearing this, I had a breakdown

  • You know you can get amateur rights to this version. Personally, I think the Essgee one is only good when Jon English does it.

  • John English makes this a beauty to watch and enjoy!!!

  • THATS RALPH AND DEADEYE FROM THEIR PRODUCTION OF HMS PINAFORE!

  • You have to remember that "operatic singing" didn't happen because people thought it sounded better. It was the natural outcome of having to project into large houses in the days before mikes. Whether mikes are an altogether good thing is another matter...

  • Mullett..... :/

  • I dont understand why all of these g&s operas ive seen online have singers that sound like theyre from broadway...this is still an operetta and should be done with classical voice!

  • @adamskyb - Why? If people enjoy it more and it's more accessible with a comprehensible, contemporary singing style, why should one stick dogmatically to a style imitative of the late 19th century? G&S isn't sacred. To treat it like a revered relic of the past, rather than a fun, silly romp that everyone can enjoy, is to miss its point completely.

  • @PuissantAlgernon I don't see how it makes it less accessible. people these days just dont know what talented singing is. It would be rediculous to sing other operas this way, just cause it's comedy doesnt mean the skill has to be down graded.

  • @adamskyb - Because people associate operatic singing with a certain style of music and tone of theatre, and switch off. Also, the operatic style is more musically interesting, but harder to comprehend. I've been to see this production in both an operetta style AND a musical style, and the audience comprehended the latter far more readily. Finally, the modernised, pantomimic presentation of this particular staging of 'Pirates' would make operatic singing feel completely out of place.

  • i can't find this version anywhere online and i really want to see the full play, not just the songs. it's pretty good.

  • you'll never believe this, but my teacher was in act 2 of this. We are watching this in class now.

  • @Gargos98 Who's your teacher?

  • I like this version more than others. It's very, very funny.

  • Saw this onSky Arts recently, absolutely brilliant version, loved it.

  • I saw this (not this exact night) Australian production of it when I was three :)

And I'm not kidding, I started crying when they were tlaking about baby farming because I wanted to go on stage and sing, and Jon English stopped the show and asked if everything was alright - then they lost the plot!

  • Australia is just filled with really tall men with long, spectacular legs, isn't it?

  • samuel has a terrible voice?!
