Imagine being a 13 year old boy and seeing her perform this while standing just in front of the stage... She was really powerful as a performer back then and the most memorable act that night.
No, I am sure that the first version I heard was the Searchers. And it was written by Sonny Bono and Jack Nitzsche. Later he had his wife Cher record a version of this which I have on my Cher solo album. There
the searchers did not write this song they also did not release the first version it was jackie deshannon in fact it was written for her so now you know
Not only was this song written for Jackie and sung by her, but the other big hit for the Searchers "When you walk in the room" was written by Jackie Deshannon and again first sung by her.
gr8 version of this Sonny Bono tune...Jackie wrote 'Walk in the room'...never knew she sang 2 songs that The Searchers also covered, as well as writing one of them..very underrated performer.
The video is from a show called "Where the action is" that ran from 1965 to 1967. It aired in the afternoons. By '66 it was decidedly behind the times. Jackie DeShannon is lip-syncing, not live.
i like all the versions of this song i have heard, obviously the ramones dug her and that's why they covered it... let it just be what it is! not everything has to be compared to who had the #1 hit ,jeeeeesssshh
OMG I adore her! Notice how dead pan so many other wbite female singers are in their live performances compared to the perky and upbeat Jackie. LOVE HER! Thanks for the post!
Sonny Bono and Jack Nitzsche did write Needles and Pins Ms. DeShannon recorded it in 1963. Sonny and Cher never recorded it. DeShannon's version was heard by Cliff Bennet & the Rebel Rousers (a British band) and then The Searchers reinvented it and the rest is history. Great song!
It was recorded by Cher, I have heard it. However, I'm not sure if it was released at the time. Before Cher starts to sing, you can hear Sonny going ...badada-dada... Maybe it was just a demo.
Really got to disagree with you there. The Searchers version misses the point of the song - the big emotional punch at the end of the bridge - that moment's silence before "Because I saw him today"
Ijameiovs. It is strange how different opinions can be. I personally think that Jackie puts hardly any emotion into this joking, dancing and handclapping version.
Well in this clip she is lip-sincing to the record, not actually singing - so yes she is goofing around, clapping her hands and smiling and not really selling the song. But (in my opinion) if you compare the two recorded versions she sings the hell out of the thing - makes the Searchers version seem kind of pale in comparison.
I disagree. The Searchers' original 1964 version carries the most emotional impact. And to prove my point: who had the biggest hit with the song? The Searchers of course. #1 in the UK, #13 USA.
We'll have to disagree on that. But the Searchers' version is not the original. The song was written by Jack Nitzsche & Sonny Bono and Jackie's version was out earlier in 1964. Jackie co-wrote When You Walk in the Room. & the fact that the Searchers sold more doesn't prove they were better now does it?
so what? many people would regard the ramones version as the one that most affected my generation. charts don't mean a thing. a song like this that is done over and over by so many artists means that it's a good song- and each version is relevant as long as someone enjoys it.

Even bringing in Phil Spector couldn't give The Ramones a hit. Why? The singer didn't have a radio friendly voice, simple as that. Too rough around the edges.
Totally agree! This is one of the best songs I know but the Ramones srewed it. A pitty that they coverd this song. I also prefer the version of the searchers, the song played by smokie is the seccond best.
This is my absolute favorite version of this song-Jackie's just so adorable. Though, I'm pretty sure that this wasn't performed live. I don't think any of the performers on "Where the Action Is!" sang live.

I might not have spelled Jack's Name
The Man was the best at his job.
Now and Sonny are working with God's Music in Heaven.
