I used to watch Nostalgia Critic, and I still believe he's funny. However, it's EASY to reach back into the past and beat up on something in comparison to what's available today, and I think he's going to have to find a new shtick soon. Patch Adams is a good film, and changes were made in the story and for the actors based on what Patch Adams himself wanted. I've heard him speak in person, and the TONE of the film really fits his message about laughter in medicine.
i didn't like this movie, even before NC, but thats when i compared it to the real patch adams. I mean there was soooo much more this movie can could do, it didn't capture the story of adams right. But i did like the speeches and the hope and the likability of the idea itself. overall is it enough to save the movie, no not really but it was pretty damn close.
Enjoy it for what it is, a sentimental look at the process of healing others. The review was fantastic, but it must be said that Williams is great in these kinds of roles, he just nails it every time. There's nothing wrong with that. It's hokey, it's phoney, it's sugar-sweet, but it's an enjoyable enough movie. Just enjoy the ride.
@Sinnerseer So true, and that's the thing too is that until I watch NC's review I never really new how much it was based on the real Adams life. But yeah itt is weak to agree with someone to agree.
Even if I didn't watch the NC's review on this, I still think this is a bad movie in all ways. Even if you don't pay attention to what parts of the movie were based on Patch Adams, it's still just your generic, sappy, over the top crapfest movie.
Patch Adams said of Robin Williams in an interview, "He made $21 million for four months of pretending to be me, in a very simplistic version, and did not give $10 to my free hospital. Patch Adams, the person, would have, if I had Robin's money, given all $21 million to a free hospital in a country where 80 million cannot get care."
@Sinnerseer Yes I've watched NC's review about the movie and I just finished a video of Patch Adams talking. Though yeah it does seem like the movie doesn't come close to who Adams really is but to me it does get a laugh out of me every so often.
It doesn't matter. I truly don't care whether people like or hate this film. I just hate it when people praise or flame something just because a famous person did it first and act like it's their own opinion. And that's what's going on. If they want to hate the film, fine, but don't just do it to be trendy. That's really weak.
@Sinnerseer Additionally, who said everyone who came here from NC's review did so to be "trendy"? I disagree with that guy a lot of the time and I think he reaches more than he should with certain movies. But he was spot-on with this, and if that makes me a "sheep" in your narrow world view, so be it.
THIS MOVIE SUCKS ANUS!!!!! nuff said. Worst movie that Robin Williams starred in. A fucking disgrace of a movie, go and see the real Patch Adams and you will see what i mean.
Let's play a game. It's called, "Who Recently Watched Nostalgia Critic?"
And let's play a follow-up game: "Who's Gonna Hate This Movie Just Because He Said So?"
Seems we have a lot of winners already. I watch NC too, but that's no reason to start spamming pages just because you want to be seen agreeing with him.
No, and I'll tell you why. Recently a whole slew of people have been flaming Patch Adams videos just after NC did his review, AND suprise surprise, they were all interestingly negative. But, little to none of the comments before were. Hmmm, interesting.
@Sinnerseer So what you're saying is, people shouldn't listen to critics? That's so logical it makes me cum in my knickers. Your argument basically boils down to that because the Nostalgia Critic got the word out about this movie to an audience that never paid attention to it before, that people are sheep. No, it means he pointed out very good reasons why this doesn't work as a movie (I've seen Shadyac's work and it doesn't surprise me) and did so in a funny way. Quit bitching at others, ok?
@zachzilla26 I'm having a really difficult grasping your statement. I'm a literature and film analyst, and for any type of serious discussion about a work of art, one HAS to listen to other critics' opinions, even if you wholeheartedly disagree with them, which I have done many times throughout my career, it's important because it can either affirm or change the way you do because of an aspect of its inherent theme, story, etc. execution. So yes, listening to critics IS important.
Like many of us here, I saw the movie through NC's point of view and then I decided it was horrible. I saw nothing redeeming from the movie clips and if the movie was in my hands, I would have done it differently.
This isn't a trend. Idk why you think that. NC just happened to give great reasons to hate this movie and also INTRODUCED it to many of us. That sparked feelings in many us and provoked us to comment on this video. Those feelings are our OWN, not NC's.
I'm disapointed, i liked this film when i first saw it, loved robin williams performance, but after seeing the nostalgia critics, and looking up on the real patch adams, this movie is totally not true on patch adams real story.
Mabye this is why i like Robin Williams because he is darring to break all the rules and be unconventional sort of like Jack Nickelson. Mabye this is where Scrubs got its premise for the show.
the girl in it reminds me so much of julia roberts..
apparently the real patch adamss didnt like the movie because he said it didnt show a single bit what he was really like. it only made him look like an entertaining clown rather than a brilliant caring man. and then none of the money or hardly any of it made from the film or what robin williams made was put towards the patch adams hospital.
Just so everybody doesn't have to ask anymore, the music used in this trailer is called The World of the Heart which, surprisingly, was used in the main title for Dragon Heart.
The real patch Addams methods are abnormal and unregular, however looking at the health triangle, he had helped the emotional side and used laughter as a stress reduser and pain releiver
the very start of the trailer is ridiculous. i guarantee nobody ever said to a room full of med students "we are going to train the humanity out you". i hate when films have to set up something as the most extreme version, just for cheap and easy character development and plot progression.
he gave two speeches in my city 2day and totally changed my point of view about my 85 year old momma, so, now i am gonna make her happy and laugh the more she can and wants and i'm gonna get the movie to watch!
The real patch adams just did a speech at my hospital today in d.c. He's a truly inspiring guy, and extremely intelligent, you wouldn't believe how flawlessly he makes his case. It was an honor in my opinion to meet him!

I happen to know the real Patch Adams. One thing the movie left out: Patch is a long-haired hippy. And a genuine, good-hearted intelligent person. Too bad hollywood feels they need to cut his hair and reshape him to middle-class values. Look up the book he wrote on Amazon to see the real guy.
@SuperEggfart i was in hopsital for a bit, in a coma after an incident involving 47 baked potatoes, my head, and my car. but thats besides the point innit? i was in a coma right i know, it was farking serious and i could still hear this wanker robin williams running around the ward shouting.l i had a farking splitting headache as it is after drving over my own head. this tosser didnt help out at all. it was bang out of order i can farking tell you!

after hearing the comments from the real patch adams i'm disappointed with stupid robin williams. The only thing this movie did is spread the word about Patch Adams but it didn't help the free hospital project. Fuck universal studios for being small minded capitalist pigs!!
all i can say is.... that if im going to die... at least i want to die happy and surrounded with love.... thats what being a smile doctor is about... i am one..... and believe me.... the smiles on the kids faces would answer your questions.
What they don't show you is when most of his patients dying horribly because he didn't let the real doctors do their job. Open your eyes people, as much as it pains me to say it, but you can't cure AIDS, or Cancer, or every terminal (or non-terminal) illness on Earth with puppy dogs and unicorns.
@piepeep90 First you say "he didn't let the real doctors do their job" and then you say "but you can't cure AIDS, or Cancer, or every terminal (or non-terminal illness on Earth with puppy dogs and unicorns." Well can you cure AIDS in the first place? How can the real doctors do their job and cure AIDS when they can't. If a cancer patient is at the point where they can't recover why not give them a joyful happy ending?
@NinjahBirdy I then added other illnesses, cancer and AIDS were just examples. I meant the people who are bashing on the comments that are talking about how they can- Why am I even explaining this to you? You obviously can't grasp the concept of what I'm talking about.
@piepeep90 I read your whole response, actually. I know you added other illnesses, but you gave two examples of Cancer and AIDS, like a complete idiot. You talk about saying he didn't let real doctors do their job, but you give two examples like Cancer and AIDS and just say non-terminal diseases instead of naming some. I guess you think that he wasn't a doctor or something because he made people laugh. He didn't just do that, he integrated into the healing process. He was a clown AND a doctor.
@NinjahBirdy *sigh* Did you even watch the movie?! He "cures" dying patients with laughter. He sneaks into a hospital when he was strictly told that he is not to enter it. And all that's forgiven when he cures cancer with a tomato on his nose and a few jokes involving balloons?! NO! Life doesn't work that way, and that was the point I was trying to get across, that you can't cure disease with laughter!
@piepeep90 "And all that's forgiven when he cures cancer with a tomato on his nose and a few jokes involving balloons?!" You can't cure Cancer as it is.. You forget that this is a movie as well.. rofl.
@NinjahBirdy I also posted the comment for the people who were taking this a little too seriously and saying that they are going to cure cancer with unicorn farts.
@piepeep90 He wasn't trying to cure the patients.. this is what you missed. He said himself that it's not about "delaying death". Depression is what kills, and if doctors who care more stop depression with a bit of laughter i guarantee that healthy patients would be exiting the hospitals more often and quicker.
This has always stayed with me- working in care all my adult life i have come to learn making lifes more enjoyable doesn't matter to many- though the smallest smile can make someones day and everyone deserves to enjoy life to the fullest. Really touched me.
Bueno este video me recuerda esa maravillosa pelicula, que me hace recorda a su vez una parte importante de mi vida en la que siempre estoy pendiente y por la cual tambien vivo.

If it was its own movie, and not about real people, it would be fine.
But, since it IS based on real people, it's incredibly disrespectful.
Especially to Patch's friend who died. That is enough to make it a terrible movie.

@Cxeri93 Exactly. He said it's not about delaying death, but improving the quality of life. Laughter makes your life richer, which makes the quality.
