On this, the first night of Chanukah I am sick in bed with a bad cold instead of out at a candle lighting somewhere. I looked up videos of this song to try to make myself feel better and luckily for me, this was the first thing to pop up. Watching this made me feel as if I was with my entire family lighting the menorah. I would also like to say that the little girl who had the solo has some voice.
Wow!! As an Orthodox Jew on the Chanukah holiday, I am sitting here in awe of the emotion these kids have given across in this song, even though it is not part of their own personal heritage. Was some of the meaning of the words of "Rock of Ages", and the Chanukah story, given over to them when they learned the song? They seem to be singing with an understanding of its message. In any event, it is a beautiful rendition! (and btw, I'm with the teacher on the ugly comments, too!)
Speaking as someone who (and I'm part Jewish) learned to love this song *even without* knowing what more than a few of the words mean...I'd guess that probably a big part of the reason why the kids seem to "really feel it" is the pretty tune and their inspiring teacher (who probably did tell them at least roughly what the words mean, but my guess is that most of the kids probably just plain *love the song itself* because it's pretty and a lot of fun to sing. (Hey, at least they're having fun.)
I love this choir. Every year, a little different but still wonderful! I listen everyday. I told all my friends about these angel voices. Keep up the good work choir and Mr. B!
Thanks for sharing!! I was uploading my son's violin practice of this son when I saw this on the side. Being from NY, I just HAD to watch. The kids and teacher are awesome! I love that they move around!
as good as a music teacher u r, u would make a lousy psychologist. The "ugly" episode no doubt damages the equilibrium and greatly undermines the beauty of the video.
i respectfully but completely disagree with the "damage" you refer to. kids need to learn how to laugh at themselves, and not take teasing seriously. what if i broke down and cried damage every time my students ribbed me? if i laugh at them and myself, and vice-versa, they learn not to take themselves too seriously. i think this lesson helps in the schoolyard and in life. and i think it's obvious here that nobody is taking my jesting seriously at all, least of all the 'ugly' kid... ;)
I also disagree with nietzschele. In fact, I dare say that your playful nudges are therapeutic for inner-city kids. Maybe if these kids were from the suburbs or a small town your approach would be "damaging". But its pretty clear from their faces that they not only feel loved but they know how to express that love right back to you. They know that you are kidding and they clearly enjoy the entertainment!
Do you not catch a joke when you hear/see it? The rapport between teacher & students has been demonstrated with constant kidding around, often at the teacher's expense. This is most impt. in teaching children how to deal society & in real life situations, thus creating mentally healthy children. I think you need a chill pill.
Oh please! You clearly are not someone who knows kids (at least knows them well.) Any good teacher knows, as this guys does, that you need to be able to riff with kids. I'd venture to guess that you yourself are a psychologist, (from teacherly experience,) the people who are generally least qualified to be dispensing advice on how to deal with kids. There's been no "damage" done here--only worlds of good. Bravo to the teacher.
I am a lifelong music educator and I have got to say that was WONDERFUL!!! Kudos to the children and their incredible music teacher!
So there, all ye critics of public education who constantly decry our schools and insist that our teachers and kids are stupid and lazy and incompetent!!!
amazing kids, amazing performance!
