Mike and Mike and Mike - wow. Phantastic band, real awesome playing. It's a real pity we can't hear Michael Brecker live any more. Thanks for posting.
When I was in high school, a copy of Modern Times was passed all around. We couldn't believe it. The best album made in '83-'86. (And yes, that's the same time period as Some Great Reward!!!)
I loved everything about this video :) Breckers solo was unbelievable, and that vibe player! WHAT??!! lol I also dig the pocket and that nasty bass line :) Awesome vid
Thank You for this video ! it shwos the band with mike manierie, dar. Jones, mike stern an mich brecker
They let run a second synthy voice on most of all solo instruments. They switched that on or off during the take. - If you listen to that without video you can't be shure ... It is a symphonic sound with a small band ... There are more examples on the CD's of STEPS AHEAD
Does anyone know how Mr. Mainieri is getting that layered sound from his vibes? Is it just that the mics are going through an effects processor, or is it through a midi controller? I can't figure it out and there seems to be no information on the net about this. Sometimes his instrument is referred to as "Synthi-Vibes"...what is this? Thanks, folks!
une qualité de ouf pour ce concert ! Marie Rouana passant par là et c'est l'extase. Je parle de ça, il y a plus de 10 ans mais je suis sûr que ce serait pareil aujourd'hui.
Is there anybody who could explain whether there is a difference between EWI and the lyricon , ( Tom Scott played it a lot). To me Beirut has been their best track , quite energetic, most records of Steps lack that kind of pressure or tension in my view
the difference between between Lyricon and EWI is this - the lyricon was made in the 1970s by a company called Computone. It is analog, and uses a bass clarinet mouthpiece. It has no midi compatibility as it far pre-dated midi. The EWI came into existence in the mid 80s, designed by Nyle Steiner, and since 1987 distributed by Akai. It does not use a reed, and has digital/midi capabilities. It also has an 8 octave range. I hope that helps!
@ottolight the lyricon had a woodwind mouthpiece on it. there was a very limited option on sounds you could produce on it. Although very beautiful in tone like the EWI it was still very low tech and the EWI sort of took it's place. The EWI can essentially do everything the lyricon could and much much more. Hope that helps
@ottolight As far as I know the Lyricon is a given name for the additive synthesis device that is a "stand alone" system and could be described as an "EWI" - electronic wind instrument - although EWI - the generic term - is referring to any device of that ilk - ie Yamaha WX or Akai EWI - yes this is a great track and I love Brecker's use of EWI.
Glad they kept Mike Stern with his craapy chorus tone on the leash, no solo for Mike.He is great but his tone just sucks, why put all that cheesey shit on top of a guitar? Much Love to Mr. Breaker! And thanx to Guitarschmoozer I Believe in what music can do to lift us up.
Ok buddy, so when YOU have to choose whether to use chorus or not, you can choose not to but please do not slander the voice of Mike or any other player. They are all special and unique in their own ways.
I owe you an apology too, I should not have gone after you like that. The second I posted that comment I was sorry I had done it. I am not one to pick fights especially with people I have never even met before. And besides, everyone is entitled to their opinion. By the way, I watched that video of Tal Farlow playing Misty. That sounded great!
I swear to god I fucking CRIED literally on Mike Brecker's solo when they switched to the B section of the changes. This is the best Mike vid I've ever seen... I fucking love the SOUL and heart in this.... THIS IS THE BEST. PLEASE LET THIS MUSIC CONTINUE TO LIVE ON THROUGHOUT ETERNITY!!!!!! SO MUCH ENERGY, PASSION, AND EMOTION!
jesus, i couldn't have said it better. when i first heard that "B section" 25 years ago i too cried and totally freaked (esp the peak w the drum roll & the ewi shots).
You are so right- what a band -what a concentration and what a comunication between all of the groupe. Also they are clearly at their peek in the 1980. awesome
Hey, could someone tell me what year this was originally filmed? my friend is saying 85-87 and im saying 91-93. We have betted £1. My guess is based on the EWI and the outfits, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for posting this awesome clip! X
im not a pro but i can tell u that it goes from a continuous D-7 to an alternating chord pattern of Bbmaj7, C7, A-7, G7, or something along those lines which sounds cool cuz it goes from the b7 to the b6 then alternates a few notes after that which sounds rly cool when u play it after the same chord played over and over for a while
