  • Mike and Mike and Mike - wow. Phantastic band, real awesome playing. It's a real pity we can't hear Michael Brecker live any more. Thanks for posting.

  • anyone transcribed Brecker's solo? :)

  • Now I know a band that might have been a big inspiration for Dream Theater, other than Rush

  • Wow, from the 122 000 views I must be at least 119 000!

  • where is the mike stern solo :(

  • Oh..my..guh..guh..GAWD, that was COSMIC!

Fuck "steps!" More like LIGHT YEARS ahead!

  • M・ブレッカー、M・マイニエリ・D・ジョーンズ・M・スターン・S・スミス~~なんだこのメンバーは、強力だったステップス・アヘッド! #jazzm

  • Je suis allé les voir au festival de jazz de tournai il y a quelques années, ce sont de grands musiciens!!! j'aime!

  • 4:52 <3 !!!

  • I mean, I looove the whole number but 5:15 - 6:10 just blow your face away! Pure emotion flying out of that EWI!

  • i also thought this was released bet 91-93 but i realised how young i am but still enjoyed this music, thank u for posting these videos guys!!!

  • When I was in high school, a copy of Modern Times was passed all around. We couldn't believe it. The best album made in '83-'86. (And yes, that's the same time period as Some Great Reward!!!)

  • What a track!

1st came across this and "Sumo" on late night British tv,in the 90's. They used it as filler...

    Still sounds Amazing!

  • The musianship and 'thinking' is still light year's ahead even to this day! Just amazing players.

  • the sounds remind me of Shawn Lane!

  • Fan -freaking-tastic - can't believe even TWO people don't like this - have they no taste?

  • @templarseries yea, just different from yours.

  • two people dislike this?......bull shit

  • Does anybody have the DVD of this concert in Japan???

  • That bass groove starting @ 3:53 is the heat son! Darryl is so under appreciated as a player sometimes its unreal! Good stuff man!

  • @bayce3 Yeah, man. Darryl does not get enough cred, especially during his years with Miles.

  • I loved everything about this video :) Breckers solo was unbelievable, and that vibe player! WHAT??!! lol I also dig the pocket and that nasty bass line :) Awesome vid

  • very nice ! です.

  • Steve Smith is so f-in tight!!

  • crazy eistein!!!very good !

  • Mind. Blown.

  • Great fluidity! .. I agree with your line of expression.!

  • Thank You for this video ! it shwos the band with mike manierie, dar. Jones, mike stern an mich brecker

They let run a second synthy voice on most of all solo instruments. They switched that on or off during the take. - If you listen to that without video you can't be shure ... It is a symphonic sound with a small band ... There are more examples on the CD's of STEPS AHEAD

  • 6.01 waaaaah

  • great :)

  • Does anyone know how Mr. Mainieri is getting that layered sound from his vibes? Is it just that the mics are going through an effects processor, or is it through a midi controller? I can't figure it out and there seems to be no information on the net about this. Sometimes his instrument is referred to as "Synthi-Vibes"...what is this? Thanks, folks!

  • crazy

  • he makes the ewi sound like real instrument. legend.

  • electric (electrified!) vibraphones rule within this fusion jazz context anyway.

  • That EWI is weeeeeeird! But I like it!

  • that's an EWI (electronic wind instrument) !

  • what is instrument is michael brecker playing?

  • an ewi i think...

  • une qualité de ouf pour ce concert ! Marie Rouana passant par là et c'est l'extase. Je parle de ça, il y a plus de 10 ans mais je suis sûr que ce serait pareil aujourd'hui.

  • where can i download this song?

  • Right here, if you've got the RealPlayer. I've already done it.

  • yes, but... how???

  • groovin' space funk... I dig

  • I saw this for the first time last night and it blew my mind. Crazy Electro-Jazz super music!!

  • oh !@#$ mikes controlling a multi-moog with a set of vibes!!! bad ass!!!!

  • what a groove ! brecker agility will always surprise me... R.I.P !

  • trop grillé neil...lol mais ta raison loool

    -Mel

  • siguen siendo majicos sus notas flotan en el aire Michael y Mike soberbios ...

  • Mamma mia che roba , peccato che come genere il fusion ha avuto successo per un breve perioodo

  • Just one word: Amazing!

  • This is way out. Just like a bunch of good dreams.

  • Is there anybody who could explain whether there is a difference between EWI and the lyricon , ( Tom Scott played it a lot). To me Beirut has been their best track , quite energetic, most records of Steps lack that kind of pressure or tension in my view

  • the difference between between Lyricon and EWI is this - the lyricon was made in the 1970s by a company called Computone. It is analog, and uses a bass clarinet mouthpiece. It has no midi compatibility as it far pre-dated midi. The EWI came into existence in the mid 80s, designed by Nyle Steiner, and since 1987 distributed by Akai. It does not use a reed, and has digital/midi capabilities. It also has an 8 octave range. I hope that helps!

  • Sumo was another great track from this concert

  • @madworld111

    all tracks were great !!!!

  • @ottolight Yeah, their best track after Pools of course!!

  • @ottolight Check out "Trains" and from the LP New York City (NYC) "Stick Jam" is really hig energy stuff

  • @ottolight the lyricon had a woodwind mouthpiece on it. there was a very limited option on sounds you could produce on it. Although very beautiful in tone like the EWI it was still very low tech and the EWI sort of took it's place. The EWI can essentially do everything the lyricon could and much much more. Hope that helps

  • @ottolight As far as I know the Lyricon is a given name for the additive synthesis device that is a "stand alone" system and could be described as an "EWI" - electronic wind instrument - although EWI - the generic term - is referring to any device of that ilk - ie Yamaha WX or Akai EWI - yes this is a great track and I love Brecker's use of EWI.

  • Cavolo , ma quanto erano bravi !!!

  • SEMPRE GRANDI

  • Brecker's solo is magical!!

  • I had no idea Steve Jobs left Apple to play EWI with this band ... oh, wait ...

  • A1 Upload!

  • so inventive and well played, amazing

  • I was wrong to critiicise Mike Stern. for his chorus tone. I am sorry I posted what I did. He is successfull I am not. My Bad.

  • Glad they kept Mike Stern with his craapy chorus tone on the leash, no solo for Mike.He is great but his tone just sucks, why put all that cheesey shit on top of a guitar? Much Love to Mr. Breaker! And thanx to Guitarschmoozer I Believe in what music can do to lift us up.

  • Ok buddy, so when YOU have to choose whether to use chorus or not, you can choose not to but please do not slander the voice of Mike or any other player. They are all special and unique in their own ways.

  • Dear Chris,

You are right, I,apoligise for my comments on Mike Sterns guitar tone. Mike played with Miles Davis, who am I to critisise? Please forgive me

  • I owe you an apology too, I should not have gone after you like that. The second I posted that comment I was sorry I had done it. I am not one to pick fights especially with people I have never even met before. And besides, everyone is entitled to their opinion. By the way, I watched that video of Tal Farlow playing Misty. That sounded great!

  • Gayest argument ever.

  • Mike's a genius, but that tone gets on my nerves too when he over-does it ...

  • This is one of my all time favourite fusion songs, it's fantastic, listen to Brecker go!

  • Oh the Musicianship in this is too too too much !!!!

Makes you want to go out and make a law banning all Pop music and MTV definitely !!

Mike is just always so so so much in command - I love this guy plays, moves, looks on his instrument !!

RIP Michael, you will always touch us with your soul-deep playing, taking us to places we never thought possible.

  • @Jez2008UK Where have you read that Michael died ? I checked his website and his Bio and nothing there indicates that he is dead.

  • @sauerix he is definitely dead. I saw his brother Randy the day before he died.

  • i just came from an open rehearsal with these guys ( they are playing tomorrow at a local jazz festival tomorrow ) it was sic.

  • ez egy nagyon nagy klasszikus! fantasztikus zene!

  • Micheal went to my high school

  • Mike's father was my Godfather. Man, do we miss them so badly. You'll never know how much.

  • I swear to god I fucking CRIED literally on Mike Brecker's solo when they switched to the B section of the changes. This is the best Mike vid I've ever seen... I fucking love the SOUL and heart in this.... THIS IS THE BEST. PLEASE LET THIS MUSIC CONTINUE TO LIVE ON THROUGHOUT ETERNITY!!!!!! SO MUCH ENERGY, PASSION, AND EMOTION!

  • I agree. This part allways gets to me.

  • @MagicRain505 I know what you mean, man. The B section is absolutely rediculous! just makes you wanna move.

  • @MagicRain505

    so true

  • @MagicRain505

jesus, i couldn't have said it better. when i first heard that "B section" 25 years ago i too cried and totally freaked (esp the peak w the drum roll & the ewi shots).

    stupendous

    brecker lives!

  • @MagicRain505 SPOT ON! MY FAVOURITE PART AS WELL :)

  • You are so right- what a band -what a concentration and what a comunication between all of the groupe. Also they are clearly at their peek in the 1980. awesome

  • GREAT VIDEO

  • Thanks for posting - pity the original DVD is so much better (it's one of those "show off your audio/video system to your friends" discs).

  • What is the name of the DVD? Can you let met know?

  • tokyo 1986...

    I'm sorry, you loose

  • creo que el efecto "electro en los tom toms es horripilante

  • something's wrong with toms

  • Hey, could someone tell me what year this was originally filmed? my friend is saying 85-87 and im saying 91-93. We have betted £1. My guess is based on the EWI and the outfits, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for posting this awesome clip! X

  • yep, its 1986. both the CD or the DVD are a great buy

  • Great vid.

FWIW, Levin also played on Brothers in Arms.

  • this proves that cool hit its prime long ago.

  • Nice post but are you trying to protect our ears with low volume? ;-)

  • Great! Got the CD for years... and just yesterday got the DVD of this concert... the DVD has more on it... such a cool concert this.

  • Where did you get dvd?

  • My girlfriend got it somewhere off the newsgroups :)

  • Do you have any link to a page where I can buy ìt?

  • im not a pro but i can tell u that it goes from a continuous D-7 to an alternating chord pattern of Bbmaj7, C7, A-7, G7, or something along those lines which sounds cool cuz it goes from the b7 to the b6 then alternates a few notes after that which sounds rly cool when u play it after the same chord played over and over for a while

  • Can a pro musician tell us what on earth do they do at 4:53? Do they go from a minor vamp to a dominant vamp? What makes this change so awesome?

  • Bass players, take note - nobody grooves harder than Darryl Jones. (By the way, I'm a drummer).

  • I agree. I was blessed to have played with Darryl when he was 16. I'm a drummer also. His birthday is Dec 11. Happy belated birthday if you read this Darryl. AWB

  • and now he plays Brown Sugar and gets paid a boatload by the Stones.

  • Ez a világ legjobb bandája!!!Amikor voltak Budapesten,életem legszebb napját éltem át akkor...!

  • huahua

Mike Stern.... swingging his legs since... ever!

  • It kicks at 4:53 seconds, killer, seen em live and listened to this CD a million times, fully cooks at 5:52.

  • Gooooooooooood stuufff!!!

  • That breakdown around 4 mins. is a beast man.....more bands should learn to groove so hard.......

  • What a monster line up. I sure miss Brecker. Much as a Mike Stern fan that I am, most of what you hear on this tune is the Breck and Steve Smith. And Live in Japan is my favorite SA album of all. Two sticks up!

  • I also have this dvd. I love it.

    Check this young group:

    Up Above jazz

  • Esta rola me controla. Que rolonononn!!

  • Ahhh, the 80's cheesy synth presets and Simmons drums,

why did they do it? Other than that, great!!

  • You have to remember what this represents the sounds you refer too was pretty ground breaking at the time, they were very original yeah some cheesy stuff they prolly would'nt play if it were present day but back in the day it was all ligit....

  • WHATS CHEESY ABOUT PERFECTION

  • haha i agree. i think they sound awesome.

  • "WHITE ELEPHANT" est mieux.

  • what an amazing sounds effects, especially the tom toms of steve smith

  • 3:23: Daryl is DA man!
