i think page played his best in 72/73 because at the later shows such as knebworth he was so into heroin that he could barely play but the live aid reunion was jimmys worst performance nothing could be as bad as that concert
@shredmaster100 not his fault guitar was outta tune on rock n' roll, whole lotta love and stairway that day.. to me stairways solo that day was one of my fav page performances because he had nothing to work with and still poured his soul into the stairway solo and made it sound epic.. wasnt clean but had pure emotion..
he did his best that day but if you look at his face in some of the live aid footage it is clear he is either stoned or drunk but hes still one of the best guitarists left alive on earth today i mean i see all these young players trying to play as fast as possible and they suck i used to be one of those players but learnt more from jimmy than any of the shred guitarists that reminds me i need to change my youtube name otherwise people will think im a hypocrite
If Jimmy Page was "sloppy", it was because he played with Soul, not technique, improvising, eyes closed, sweat pouring, guitar hung so low you'd think he was playing Cricket - try it - not easy. Guitarists, even if they CAN play like this today, still aren't writing with the prolific output of this ALL TIME GENIUS = GOD. And remember, Zep was his diamond, but as a producer he influenced the SOUND of sooo many rock bands!! Haters, misquoters, please go home and turn up your technical rock.
don´t forget that page didn´t use any effects. By the way he included lots of treble in his sound, which let you easily hear mistakes. Nowadays, most guitarist´s sounds are fullfilled with effects...
Not gonna lie most of the guitar players these days use heavy distortion which covers many little mistakes. I'd say most guitar players would sound "sloppy" through those less driven amps. Definitely not saying all guitar players would but still a lot of them.
First photo: Ah ah aha ahh ahha ahh! Dazed and Confused. ;)
Really? The whole Jimmy's sloppy thing trotted out again? Sloppy brilliant. To quote Roger Waters: "It's whether it moves you or not. There's nothing else that matters." So he's not fucking Mozart.Works for me just fine thank you.
Page made the reply to an interviewer's remark that his solo runs were different every show of the tour: "Better to live one day as a lion than to spend your whole life as a lamb!"
So out of respect for being braver than any other performing super-star guitarist I can think of you may want to replace "sloppy" with"choppy" on your post don't you agree?
quien como led ?nadie en este mundo se le acerca,a sido inspiracion de algunos estupendos grupos musicales los cuales a veces se le comparan!pero quien es mas grande que dios nadie!!!!!!!!
@Zoso709 I don't understand zeppelin fans. The man himself said his playing was sloppy & that covered his lack of technicality. I like zeppelin but damn he is sloppy an excellent guitarist nonetheless but sloppy.
@fairyfellermaster Page has never said that he was sloppy himself. I don't know where you got that bogus fact. Secondly, you have to realize that the majority of what Page played was improved - made up on the spo.t
@Zoso709 Yes he has & I've got the interview in which he says it. I think it's in guitar world that he mentions it but I don't understand why zep fans are so blind. Jimmy is one of the best guitarists ever, no one argues that, but he is a sloppy guitar player too. But then zep fans are such... That even when Jimmy played awful fans still thought he played great. That's not a true fan IMO.
@fairyfellermaster No don't get me wrong, 77 and after Jimmy was absolutely terrible. But that was due to heroin, homesickness and just being overwhelmed with everything. I just think that early Zeppelin was tight and by no means sloppy. I have the Guitar World interview, he says that he isn't known for his technique, but that =/= being sloppy.
@Zoso709 I have guitar world interviews of Jimmy since the BBC sessions cd came out. I'm a collector of Jimmy page stuff so idk which interview it was but I'm gonna look it up. Yes heroin took a toll on him so much so that he had a frail appearance. True, early Zeppelin were tight as evidenced on the Fillmore tapes & royal Albert hall.
sloppy my ass he improvised like a god. instead of fucking playing the same solo over and over again (wich he could of easily done) and hit all the notes perfectly, he took a chance just like they all did that's why there the best fucking band ever.

For this band...For this MUSIC...For this POWER, for this ENERGY, for this ALMOST ULTIMATE PLESEAURE, i just have one thing to say (try to understand what I´m saying):
"if you dont think this is sloppy I'm assuming that your ear is pretty untrained"
Fuck being 'trained' if you cant here how perfect this is, than atleast consider this:
being 'trained' or conforming in any way to an established way of doing things is probably one of the most un-rock 'n' roll things to do EVER. now get the fuck out.
@nowinterweather yes it may be sloppy but but its the spirit behind the music that makes the magic man. if you want technical precision listen to MAB or yngwie malmsteen. Led Zeppelin performances are pure bliss that is to be interpreted as well as heard. Pure analytical analysis of music is what has killed it for today's generation. There's no soul.
@traviswage I know, Zeppelin is my favorite band. Jimmy's my second favorite guitar player (behind SRV), and i love his playing from Zep's earlier years.
@vettezeppelin I guess you didn't read my second comment.. Jimmy Page is my second favorite guitarist behind SRV... Both were very sloppy, but that's not a bad thing...They both played with a lot of feeling, and the sloppiness seemed to add to that. People always consider it a bad thing to be sloppy, but it isn't necessarily.
@Ln192 Dude heroin didnt change his playing, it changed his motivation and attitude and that wasnt just cause of heroin that was cause of the lifestyle he was living (a rockstars lifestyle)
@Ln192 Herion had yet to really affect his life until after 1975.Some of the 77' shows were really bad.I agree with the comment it did not change his playing it changed his motivation. Just listen to ITTOD Jonsey took the helm at that one.If Jimmy had been not so involved with herion I'm sure the album would have been different. My fav verisons of this song still has to be "The BBC Sessions " and TSRTS,Thats the stuff that will give you chills.HE IS STILL THE BEST!!
Led Zeppelin = Sloppy = Creative = New things = 99% improvised = Longer performances = jaw dropping solo runs = Complete and total Sex to the ear aka EARGASM = HOLY SHIT = LED ZEPPELIN IS THE GREATEST BAND TO EVERY GET ON STAGE
This is an interesting version. Is it from the same series of performances as the one heard on the Song Remains the Same? I think Remains was spliced together from material recorded over three nights in LA. I wonder if this was one of those nights. It's good but clearly not as good as the one that made it to the video.
@1Doz spliced from 3 nights in New York, not LA. And the album differed from the Movie, pagey was very creative in picking certain parts of songs to mash together to make one big song. For a insanely detailed description of the exact nights that were used go here: thegardentapes . co . uk
i don't like this version of the intro, its too fast, doesn't allow the song to build up tension to be released during the solo. it takes away from the feel of the whole song. still amazeing though.
I am eating up all the Led Zepelin from utube I cab listen to, this is no exception.
