I have answered this before, but some seem to disagree. Do you have metal working tools and skills? You can build a freight car for little more than the cost of steel and some truck castings. If you have 100s of thousands to blow on a toy, It is a pretty sure bet you could find someone willing to take your money. A lot of this hobby is achievable with sweat equity and good friendships.
So what do those locomotives run on? Gas? Electric? Diesel? That would be neat if you had like a 26 horsepower kubota diesel in it. And could you give me a ballpark cost on the INRD 31?
This one is gasoline/hydraulic. There are a few around the USA that are diesel powered with a small Kubota engine. These engines come ready to run for around $10-$12k. If you have the right tools, it costs much less than that.
@kirkifer Bullshit! 12 grand? Jeesus, I guess that is half affordable. I know a guy who owns a G-Scale locomotive shop, and he just bought a set of 7 inch tracks, 3 cars and a locomotive. He said the set cost him 70k, 25 thousand for everything else, and 45 thousand for the locomotive. It was just electric, but maybe it was because it was a model of a 2-6-0 steamer? It wasn't even that big compared to the bigger ones you can get too...
One of the guys in the group actually has a scale prototype FRED he wants to start selling. It is unbelievably realistic. I am still waiting for mine, so not sure when they will go into production.
Well, it's a lot of work, but it is pretty fun. There are some real dynamics involved in this scale that smaller scales just do not have. There is nothing like setting 10 pounds of air on the brakes and feeling the cars tugging. On the other hand, the engineer can release the brakes and feel the slack run in.... VERY COOL !!!!
the engines weigh as little a 300 pounds for a small switcher and close to 1500 pounds for a large steamer. The engines in the video are probably in the 600 - 700 pound range.
That looks like fun, fun time it is, NICE!!!

I hate it when videos have stupid music like this one has. Why not just let people hear the sounds of the trains? The damn music ruined this video!
