  • I'm a premed student, and I'm learning rach 3 right now on my own time. Hopefully before I finish med school I can finish learning it. But I never imagined myself getting to play it with an orchestra. You've made me believe that I can make my dream come true. Thanks, Dr. Yu ;)

  • An incredible, masterful performance by

Dr. Yu. I admire his intensity and passion

    bravo to your performance.

  • Untouchable...

  • simply amazing!

  • I remember playing against Thomas in the Saskatoon music festival years ago and knowing if his name was on the list, the rest of us were competing for runner-up. An incredibly talented musician who I now use as an example to inspire my own students.

  • You are incredible. A hope for other "amateurs" out there, to see how amazingly you play this hard piece. ConDraculations!

  • Very inspiring. Thank you for representing all of the pianists out there who do not play piano for a living.

  • I completely disagree. Check out Kissin's recording...it's even slower than this. Would you call him a cautious player? I don't think the emotional effect of this composition is one to be rushed. Bravo to this version!

  • very good!!! played effortlessly

  • wow... this video is just raw proof that you can make anything happen if you set your mind to it.

it blows my mind to see you play SO well as an "amateur", which is something i wish to do... i've been struggling with what i should do with my future, and i do see piano in it. although i may not be the next Li Yundi or Vladamir Horowitz, it brings me great pleasure to see myself in your shoes if i keep my focus! thanks for the inspiration!

  • I too am an amateur pianist, still at University, studying physics, although I dream of performing the Rach 3 in concert one day, maybe in 10, 15 years.

How long did it take you to learn, if I may ask?

  • ok,now i see what you are getting at,everyone is of varying calibre amateur or professional so it is a bit of a misnomer, yes and negative

  • hey,why do you realise you are not up to a professionals calibre?i don't understand

  • i want to break down the barrier of the title "amateur". it doesn't necessarily mean that the level of playing is amateur, i just want to represent all those who are out there that love to play piano but have other careers during the day. if anything, i'd love to get rid of that amateur title, because it carries a negative connotation.

  • I just saw him last night at the Salle Cortot in Paris playing Venezia e Napoli of Liszt and Ballade #2 of Chopin. He was amazing ! I was sitting 10 ft away from the piano, such amazing hands !

  • Thomas, there are no other amateur pianists better than you! So excellent playing!!!

  • thanks so much! what kind words. i am proud to represent all amateurs out there, to prove that dreams do come true.

  • What I say are true words! I've never seen an amateur pianist like you! You play the cadenza much better than I.

  • Congratulations on your performance Thomas. You were fantastic.

  • excellent playing. you are very inspiring!!!

  • As an amateur pianist, I dreamed one day of playing the Rach 3. Now I realize I am not up to the professional calibre, but hopefully you will feel connected to the music in your own way! Check out thomasyu dot ca to learn more!

  • :O why do you think your not up to professional calibre?

  • @thy306 You're too modest, you are without any doubt much better than a lot of international-level professionals ;)
