  • Just to let you know, THIS IS NOT THE FULL VERSION.

I've been taught a much better version, much longer version on guitar.

    And I lost the disc.

And I've been trying to find the much longer version

    But to no avail...

Can you try to find the longer version?

  • NOT MIXED PROPERLY, Still very nice to hear.

  • AAawww awful. Is it me or is the sound horribly distorted?

Please upload in a better quality audio, this song really deserves it.

  • Am I the only one smiling and nodding at the same time while watching this?

  • One of the many great Pat Metheny songs. I love the unique sounds he creates on his guitar. This one sounds a bit like a citar. On another song his guitar sounds like an elephant. He is amazingly creative and unique and a most excellent song composer and guitar player!

  • pat is one of the all time guitar greats

  • Pat Metheny muito bom e o marçal no chocalho nao perde o ritimo do trem nem um momento

valeu Pat Metheny e o cara e ainda pegou a melhor morena Sonia Braga

  • Words can't describe

  • A very dear friend (and a giant in the music business) just passed away. His wishes were for all of his friends to play a song precisely at the time of his cremation to celebrate his life. I just finished listening to this piece for the millionth time. Last Train Home does that and more. This piece of music so beautifully expresses the poignancy of loss and brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it. Thanks Pat for this timeless classic.

  • Pat Metheny is one of the ten most genius artists of the world.

  • My all time favorite Pat Metheny song!!!!

  • Wonderful music; what a genius.

  • I never got this song, he's makin the other guys work so hard just so he can play these cheesy lines over it. The lines are pure cheese and I know Pat was just trying to sell records when he penned this piece. I can say this because Ive been listening to Pat since his first album. Matter of fact I'm sure I was the only guy who bought his first record when it came out. I found it in the 99 cent bin at record store and he looked like a cool barefoot stoner guitarist on the cover so I bought it.

  • @AmericanDiaz sorry, but you're full of shit. Nothing "cheesy" about simple heartfelt melodies. Why would you make such an ignorant, negative comment? I feel sorry for you.

  • @AmericanDiaz, you obviously are into saying things for a response or shock value. I bet you dont believe your own words. Cheesy??? Are you kidding me? What makes good guitar melodies cheesy? He is one of the great guitarist of our era and his music is always uniquely geniune. You gotta love the Pat Metheny Group

  • music for an other kind of train for an other kind of home.. always a touch of divine. Isn`t it?

  • Keeping some good time here.

  • Una autentica maravilla, no dejo de escucharla, gracias. Jorge

  • I gotta play this song with my band. I have to drum with brushes for like 7 minutes at this fucking insane speed !

    any tips ? xD

  • @LycosaMinecraftLMFAO Moeller technique :)

  • hey cool music haters: if you doesnt like this music, please just click away and post no comments. we dont need your opinion.

  • Transdimensional.... timeless...

  • Some times I just want to get on that train and ride home.

  • i remember when i was little and me and my family used to drive around Yugoslavia/Ex-Yugoslavia with our truck, going to the seaside or anywhere else, listening to this, leo kottke and such... was amazing.

  • Legendary jazz guitarist PAT METHENY recalls his performance at an ill-equipped Italian soccer stadium. Read more at The Worst Gig (WorstGig.com).

  • starting at 1:49, he plays a line thats the hook in a pop song i believe. I cant think of what song it is though... any ideas???

  • I absolutely love this song...I want this played at my funeral.

  • my father has this amazing piece of music recorded from the radio!!!!!! i can't believe i found it!!!!!!! Everything is so concted!! THANK YOU

  • Love the way P Metheney dares to offer another world...fascinating sounds...

  • ....spiritual..

  • wish they'd shown more of the bass player. dude was really holding it down all the way through.

  • @sakeenahm You're down right, that's one of the best bass players in the world, Steve Rodby, who's the longtime bass player for Pat Metheny Group. Pat has an even better Bassist, Christian McBride, in the Trio, with Antonio Sanchez on drums. That's an amazing group, too.

  • cuando lo que acompaña es tan sutil, caminar se convierte en poesía.Me gusta cerrar los ojos y caminar...

  • !Me encanta!!

  • My second favorite Pat Metheny song!!!!!!

  • @swhit1969 What's the first?

  • In AA we have a saying that goes like this-opinions are like assholes-everybody has one. You get a lot of opinions passed off as fact.

  • I saw him live during his Secret Story tour. Couldn't take my eyes off the guy on the snare drum. Pat is my favorite performer.

  • love this tune but this is terribly distorted.

  • I remember this song from the Publix commercials so many years ago. It always made me think of Sonic 3 on the Sega Genesis.

  • Ale ta ciufcia zapierdala:) Great song and sound of fast steam train...so hurry, and so peacefull.

  • wow. im 14 and discovered pat yesterday. hes awesome. i always hated jazz, but im turned 180 degrees. pat plays so amazing. fast but with much feeling.

and do you guys know some other good jazz artists/ bands thanks.

    sorry for my bad english

  • @pipsqueek14 This is not jazz.

  • @infinera06 maybe this one not, but he defenatly (dont know how to spell that word correctly) plays jazz.

  • Pat Metheny the great music!!!!!!!

  • trenes.........van, vienen, se cruzan

  • The bass and percussion alone is terrific to the ears

  • 36 people missed the last train home lol

  • soooo thankful for Y-tube Until then I thought I was the only Pat Metheny fan on the Planet. Does anyone remember the Falcon and the Snowman Sound Trac by The Pat Metheney Group?

  • the best performance is in this record : wonderfull!!! in my summer 1988 .

  • The sound of the moving train is done perfectly

  • Holy shit its a time portal back to shitty 80's movie collage songs.... AKA sucking ass. Its not even part of a genre, its something all its own, in the worst way possible. I can't believe my Jazz ensemble director made me listen to this shit.

  • @codered9696 You sound jelly. Are you?

  • @codered9696 Take it easy man...I know what you're saying, but sometimes being too much of a purist is a mistake,,,,and improbable as it may seem, maybe your jazz ensemble director knows something that you don't....hint: think Emotional Content....it's not always in complex changes or scales...

  • @swellpropel Actually when I told my director he said I probably should've looked up a big band version.... I like some contemporary but this was just.... gahh

  • Brilliant evocative music, but then he is a master craftsman so makes it look easy while sounding perfect.

  • "Last train home" "Letter from home" "Dream of return" , hm... Pat is very, very romantc man. He is very great artist. Greetings from Poland.

  • @BabiiKareyna582 maybe because nobody can read what you're writing

  • This is my all time favorite group. Never before has music touched my soul the way theirs does. This song in particular takes me away....far away from anything that bothers me to a beautiful place.....Who needs drugs when you have the Pat Metheny Group to listen to!! Thank you so much guys!

  • This is MUSIC that transcends time and space, it will never go out of style!

  • Last Train Home is so beautiful - full of energy - like a train - like a city - like a life - it could have been written thirty years ago and it could have been written yesterday.

    Well done.

  • this song.....so majestic and far, far away :)

  • My favourite alltime musician. A freak!

  • My favourite alltime musician. A freak!

  • does anyone think a mashup of last train home and stop this train by john mayer would work?

  • @OneandOnlyMusician there'd be too much competing for front and center attention. always worth a try, but it'll sound busy, and you'd have to speed mayer's vocals way up or slow this way down

  • @tyblair18 theres always a way to make it happen, plus i like a challenge :)

  • @OneandOnlyMusician well let me know when you do it, i'd love to hear it :)

  • Pat is the best!!!

  • CBS played this song years ago before the start of the Vince Dooley's last game against Auburn University. It was quite fitting after 20 something years of coaching.

  • the best steam train in music!!!:)

  • I speced Pat on wiki. He was a music prodigy. Amazing musician.

  • I have and will always love this song it brings me peace of mind

  • I concur about Pat's rebel days in Offramp et al. I was introduced to his albums in Toronto back in the early 80s and have stuck with his creative genius ( and Lyle's) ever since, all the way back home to the Caribbean. Wonder if Lyle appreciates being in parentheses so often?

  • This is a great song always was on commercials during NFL games and the weather channel local on the 8s

  • Greatest Song for Ever!!!

  • TREMENDO TEMA!!!

  • @limafoca 33 personas con el gusto quien sabe donde. VIVA PAT METHENY!!! TE QUEREMOS EN SUDAMÉRICA...

  • A wonderful track.

    One of Pat's best.

  • Listen carefully to the intermittent chord changes. Do they remind you of the closing piano chords from Rod Stewart's "Downtown Train", incidentally, another song about trains??

  • one bad ass subliminal song puff puff pass

  • I could listen to this endlessly...

  • What a fkn feeling :) Pat is really magical!

  • LIKE TO SEE JOHN MYER PLAY THIS ON GUITAR

  • My dad and Pat Metheny's dad used to play in bands together back in their good old days....now Pat enraptures us both with his amazing sound. Dad commented with great depth of feeling once that Metheny's band played music like that the angels must play in heaven. Right on.

  • whats ur name dude ?

  • @camerrill It must be absolutely fantastic to have been born into a family of musicians and to be amongst such talent (you probably inherited musical abilities, too) I can only imagine.

  • The first time I heard this song, it felt like I had heard it before, and that the first few notes had lyrics associated with them.

"All aboard....for the last train home."

Now I don't hear the song any other way. Amazing that he can make an instrument speak.

  • La tua musica fa viaggiare in mondi lontani e bellissimi...................

  • This is just so mesmerizing

  • i`m a portuguese fan that saw him 5 times live.He simply breaths music...he have get me in to that train, going home, just like he wanted that i feel/imagine it...great Pat,GREAT music(hope my english is understandable)

  • Lovely piece. Deeply rooted in Blues. Listen, you can hear quotings from nursery rhymes...you can hear faint and humble echos of Muddy Waters.

PM carries loads of respect for those who came before him.

  • This is one of my favourite songs from Pat. I love the background voice from Pedro Aznar (an exquisit Argentinean musician)..

  • No one pulls the heartstrings like Pat Metheny

  • That's incredible, how he made a guitar sound like a sitar! I always have liked that sound on this song. :)

  • @tall32guy

He's not making a guitar sound like a sitar....It is a sitar, an electric sitar. He does make it sound incredible though.

  • My marching band plays this as a fanfare at 3:23 to 3:45

  • i know there is no song out there in this world like this one, but can anyone give me some songs similar to this one please?

  • @Hissael Try finding Sheperds song by Bob James. It hits the heart just like this one but very hard to find. I'm stil searching for it. It's from 1980

  • this one touches something eternal.......

  • fantastica

  • One of the first songs I remember hearing, my dad would play it for me when I said to play the "Choo-choo song". 23 years later, and I still love this song, one of my all time favs. Plus, when I'm feeling home sick, I throw this on, and I feel a bit better.

  • this is my favorite metheny tune, dont know why exactly, it just hits a part of me

  • @VegasBilgeRat A particular favorite of mine too, only barely edged out by my all time favorite PM song: Are You Going With Me on the Offramp album!!!

  • @VegasBilgeRat

I totally agree. Nowhere near his most technical or improvisational but something about it (like Are you going with me) that just haunts. Having seen Pat multiple times either while I was at Berklee or after the shows always left me awestruck.

  • Escucho este tema y me imagino el tren más rápido del mundo (smooth and fastest of the word, flying to the future)...amazing

  • An American and Canadian icon.... please tour again soon! a living legend!

  • I'm amazed that after 20 years, we are still posting comments on this song. That alone proves the validity of true beauty and passion for something wonderful. I salute the folks that have upheld standards to something this awesome and now have an ability to share with others.

  • great! I love this song! one of my favorites...I had it on my answering machine for almost 2 years before I changed it! this is the year I interviewed Pat, one of the best guitar legends of these times...(as a matter of fact I have a picture with him, wearing the very t-shirt of this video)

smiles from across the roaming miles from Melody Fox (aka the Princess of Rock) d(*_*)b

    Love Peace Music

  • So nice .. it's amazing song

  • sehr schönes stück,rein ins auto und gen süden, und ne rolle bauen..gg

  • This song reminds me of my first trip to yellowstone when I was 13.

  • RECOMIENDO OTRO TEMA DE PAT METHENY Y PEDRO AZNAR "DREAM OF THE RETURN

  • Pat is a kind of Al Jarreau on guitar.. perfection pure

  • This is my all time favorite guitarist.....

  • This song is So moving; it will be played at my funeral, as I take the last train home....

  • @jazman6252 I agree. I too have this planned for my last song.

  • What a beautiful live version of this great song! Pat Methany is a music original. I love his more traditional jazz, such as his Rejoicing album with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins, but he will always be known for this wonderful song first, and that is fine! . He blends many genres, and in the end it ends up sounding like only Pat Metheny. I loved him in 1975, I hope he can keep playing for another 35 more great and truly original years!

  • Simplesmente maravilhoso!!!! Ele é um gênio, prá mim, nada se compara a ele!!

  • Addition....A newer version ot the teardrop was constructed by John Monteleone of Islp ,long island...he also made mark knophlers latest accoustic,Mark was so captured by monteleone's genius he wrote and performs a beautiful song(called 'Monteleone') about him from the princes trust concert which is avaialable on youtube.

  • The teardrop guitar was made by D'Angelico of N.Y. ,its worth the google..this is a sythaxe

  • 31 dislikes? wtf...each to their own but come on...so easy on the ear..

  • i luv it when pat wears those charlie brownesque shirts..... Thanks Mr. Metheny for saving my life. You really did...know it or not ...ur Music reminded me that there is indeed a Creator out there...and if we allow it the Creator Will always be there for us.

  • @keybobrob i had a shirt just like it its more like a jail house shirt lol

  • @loislombardo LOL

  • Comment removed

  • @loislombardo

    I think it's a teardrop jazz guitar

  • @loislombardo - It's actually a Synth Guitar pat has played it since the 70s.

  • One of the best guitarists/composers of all time. 'nuff said.

  • @triplettam first time i ever herd of him hes great i love the sound of that guitar

  • 5/5

  • As a kid growing up, my Uncle Paul turned me on to Pat. As a father, I played this to my son when he was little and we called it the train song. Pat rips this like no other!

  • Trains are a majestic symbol or our nation -- as were the bison. Primal emotions are struck when a long freight train rolls on by. In my opinion Pat's best/deepest work were from the earlier periods (American garage/Offramp/travels,etc) .. During this phase, Pat was something of a rebel. He was almost like a country singer sans the baritone. Full of American imagery his (and Lyle's) compositions took the listener away to a better time and place. This song is no different. God bless his art.

  • @nonewmccarthyism i love your comment

  • @nonewmccarthyism Trains have a stronger inflection in thirld world countries that depend on them. I've travelled on trains all over the world. Pat captures the feeling beautifully.

  • @nonewmccarthyism

Totally agree. I know he has grown in his art over the years but the early Pat is my favorite.

  • @nonewmccarthyism ..."Trains are a majestic symbol or our nation -- as were the bison".....were???...what ever happen to the majestic symbols the bison in "our nation." Nice imagery...(never mind,.. i just remembered what happened to "our nation's bison" ...werent they ruthlessly and senselessly massacred by "our nations"majestic pioneers of the american west through a Government sanctioned slaughter to subjugate and kill the indigenous native americans. GOD BLESS AMERICA) P.S . PAT RUUULES!!!

  • @keybobrob "werent they [the bison] ruthlessly and senselessly massacred ...through a Government sanctioned slaughter to subjugate and kill the indigenous native americans."

One worthy exception here was James J. Hill's Great Northern Railroad, built without subsidy on land acquired through honest, peaceful commerce that respected Indian rights. Gee, what an idea: You want something of value, negotiate a price, and keep your word, rather than using the Army to steal it!

    P.S. -- Pat DOES rule!
