My youngest also has the "flop" ear, despite being cropped. He was a year old when I adopted him, so who knows how it got that way...the one dog I did have cropped stayed "posted" for probably three weeks, and his stood tall until the day he passed.
Either way, I've found it becomes part of their character after a while. (not that dobies have problem developing a "character")
my brother and me used to rescue dogs in north uk. we found some beautiful dogs and were fkn shocked at how badly ppl can treat such loyal and friendly animals. we had 2 doberman pups but left the tails and ears as is. i figured they had had a hard enough time as it was. i say 'rescue' but really we found them wandering the streets l8 at night and just took them in. half starved and often w nasty conditions [a pitbull-duchess-had boilin water thrown over her acc. to vet!] it's hard to ignore
The floppy ear is just a low budget crop job along with poor management by the dogs previous owners. This guy adopted the dogs so it's not his fault! Cropping was pointless to begin with... and now the dog looks weird. But he's still beautiful :)
A dog is not a Honda Civic - something you can buy and modify the way you want. It's a living highly intelligent creature with a nervous system just as sensitive as yours. It needs its tail and ears to communicate and for balance. A word to you - If you don't like the looks of a Doberman as they are when they're born, don't get a Doberman. Stop abusing and mutilate these animals to feed your own ego.
if anyone would be interested in helping me import a black and tanned doberman boy with ears cropped and tail docked (due to cropping/docking now being illegal in the uk) i would be very grateful and would be willing to pay a high amount of cash! my email is kyle_poultney@hotmail.com many thanks guys and girls!
@ChiefLilliCool It actually is good for them. The floppy ears can get caught in thorns and get bit if they are playing too rough with another dog. :) It hurts them when they get them cropped but afterwards its fine :D
@StaciLeAnnMizell I agree that there is a benefit to cropping, but my experience is that they are far less prone to ear (yeast) infections. Either way is fine, I have cropped and natural ear Dobes, and I love them no less either way.
I liken the procedure to circumscision...how many of you guys remember that one?
hahahah his floppy ear is so funny. That looks like a really nice place for them to live. And Brownies is so good looking, my next dobie will be a red one...
Some dobes have one floppy some both it just depends on the cartilage in that specific dogs ear. Regardless anyone who doubts the floppy ear would still run like a bullet if it came at them so lol ! Cool looking Dobe!
I left the ear alone. I don't mind it. And they are inside dogs for the most part. Unless they get into something and I don't have time to wash them that day. They are pretty good about staying in the yard on their own.
please check out " please help leiberman". we need to raise money to have a baseball sized tumor removed from his paw. call 1-519-756-1770 and help this poor loving puppy
@mrtrane18 the tail must be done no later than 10 days of birth give or take a few days, or it will cause pain to the Doberman and possibly devastate future behavior!
The ears range from $350-2800 depending on the procedure and is highly recommended to be done before 12 weeks of birth and there are 3 lengths the ears can be cut Doberman style if you don't ask the clinic about there procedures you will get there standard length and if they haven't done dobermans ears stay away or you will get a
does anyone know the situation with importing a doberman from USA to UK? ive looked online, from what i gather because USA is deemed a 'safe' origin there is no need for quarantine. is this correct? anybody shed some light please?
@hackkilla420 Could have been a bad crop job to begin with. Or it could have been poor care after the fact. I don't know which as I "rescued" the dog. It was like that when I got him.
I've had a few and been around a few and they are both "normal" height for what I've seen. The black one was just under 100 lbs last vet visit and proportioned well.
My dobe has the same floppy ear promblem only it's his left ear. We taped for 8 months to no avail. It fits his personality though. Just wondering, my vet recommended an ear implant to make the ear stand. She doesn't do it, but is going to find someone who does. Have you heard of this? Any idea of cost?

my dobey has big floppy ears and a long waggy tail, the way nature intended...
beniv8 2 weeks ago
@beniv8 ...the only issue with the tail, besides the fragile nature of them, is the ability to "neuter" the adult male humans in the house. (wink)

I've had it happen twice now, the ear thing you guys are talking about, and as soon as they give a real alert, it goes up and parallel to the other.
Besides, it's a personality thing, and helps me tell mine apart at a distance.
