it is six months now and no one is responsible for a faulty camera i bought from them even after some ten e-mail exchanges.
What a great review of a great camera! I've had it for a year and a half, and guess what, this video just taught me a few things I'd never even tried. Dual play & multi aspect for example.
Main problems for me: I just wish the video format was something else than .mov and the audio quality could be a lot better. Maybe I'll have a look at the TZ7...
Any suggestions on a cheap video editor for movs? I still haven't found one that I really liked.
I am using Tz5 since 8 months, very practical for travel,ng , video quality is really good 720p ! but not for low light conditions..Manuel focus is really missing point, good battery life. Concerning video editing, after long unsuccessful researches one software made me happy : Wondershare video converter platinum!
I have to say, the images it takes are great. Nice contrast, sharp.
The only thing i can compare it to is my Nikon d80 with the 18-135mm lense and i have to say, i'm still glad i own a decent SLR.
However, trying to compare the TZ5 to my d80 isnt a fair head to head. Suffice to say, i am very happy with the TZ5 even tho the HD video is still abit pants. And the mic is shite!
The ace card that this camera posses is obviously the 10x zoom.
I may be wrong, but I don't think WMM can handle Quicktime MOV files. So you'd need to convert them into something else first before it would accept them.
so 720p is MOV eh? you are right! WMM does not open MOV. my current camera is a casio that shoots MOV. i had to buy a software (adobe prem elem) but still like the simplicity of WMM. a couple of times i've taken the mov videos and converted them to AVI iot open them with WMM but i think they lose some quality.
i was looking at the TZ5 b/c of the wide angle and big 10x zoom. i mountainbike and like to shoot short sections and then put them 2gether in one video. i was hoping 720p was not MOV.
Yesterday, I went to some shops and saw a Panasonic TZ6, and I know the TZ7 is coming out, it also said that it just arrived (as in just came out) I dont understand why Panasonic have made a TZ6 and TZ7, I had a look at it and it only had one microphone and I'm sure the TZ7 has two, please help me.
Hi moviesunrated, the TZ6 (ZS1) is a more basic version of the TZ7 (ZS3), but has the same 12x zoom. See my review of the TZ7 / ZS3 at cameralabs . com to find out the differences...

What is happening to me? when i starts a video record with the empty memory (just formated), the camera only let me record for almost 9 minutes...
hello i wanna buy a camera.i need some help ppl..which one u think i should prefer:Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 , Fujifilm 100 fd, PowerShot SX 200 IS,PowerShot SX 110 IS or something else??pls give me some advise and ideas
Thanks to Gordon for the influential review. Am a proud owner now. Check out my HD vids here on YouTube. They were all recorded using a TZ5. I have high hopes the ZS3 / TZ7 would be a lot better in terms of A&V quality.
Didn't test yet the battery life, but I took some videos and pictures at my work during 2-3 days and I think you can get 30-40 min. of video with 1 charge. Panasonic say can take 300 pics but nothing about video. Don't forget some of the best of this camera: 3" display with 460000 pixels( that's amazing), 28mm lens, 10x optical zoom plus digital to16x, the zoom work smooth, not in steps as other cameras, easy to use, easy to move the files to your PC. I choose it instead of camcorder.
Thank you - enjoyed the video here- This is a fantastic camera, especially when one knows how to use it, and how easy it is to great GREAT shots with - Cheers
Well you can obviously take photos of people with any camera, but their suitability depends on your own expectations. If you need a professional result, I'd recommend using a DSLR instead, even a budget model. See the best buys section at cameralabs . com for recommended models, and check dslrtips . com for advice on taking portraits.
1. What did you expect with a build in flash of that size?? A hydrogen fusion light source??
2. The iA is great for indoor shots wherein it tries to get more light inside to lighten up the darker regions.. Works EXCELLENT if you know where to use it.
3. Use Neatimage and it will swipe them clean. I much prefer it over camera applied noise reductions.
4. NO. Panasonic usually does not apply aggressive image sharpening like the Canons. GOOD for post processing.
I bought mine today from Comet. Ex display model for £149.99.
I did try to order one at the store for delivery but their computer came up that the product was discontinued. Hence i bought the ex display model.
I must say this is a mighty fine camera. Night time/dark room are very very impressive. Much better than my 8m Samsung S800 (onsale as we speak on Ebay) plug plug.
But one thing I haven't found out yet, is if the camera has an autofocus while recording a video? E.g. if you're filming an object and you move it closer to the camera, does the camera autofocus on this new situation? Or does it get blurred like with a fixed-focus video?
hi! I've heared that I need a fast SD card to record HD videos... What's the ideal speed? Where can I buy one? What's the ideal length for recording 1 hour?
Hey Gordon, do ya have a review for the Canon Powershot SX110 is?? Im too gonna get a compact camera, but im stuck between the Panasonic DMC-TZ15 and the Canon Powershot SX110 IS, any advice??
i want a digital camera that would be good for recording videos at a concert, and one that would also have reasonable sound. would this camera be suitable.
i understand a video camera recorder is better but i need an actual camera
i would be soooo grateful if you could help me find a suitable camera.
Yes it records sound, but like most still cameras, it's not great - and it's also easy to cover the mic with your finger. See the features page of our full review for more details.
i just dropped mine in the ocean last week---best non slr ive ever owned they are on back order all over america----i could just scream--1 month till they come in
Great review. One question though: On Panasonic's website it says that Lumix DMC-TZ5S can zoom up to 16.7X if you set it in 3MP mode. The camera stores linked from your website bring up TZ5K model. Can you tell if TZ5K has similar zoom capacity with lower resolution like in TZ5S? I plan to buy it through a link to dbuys from CameraLabs pricegrabber, thats the lowest I found. Great work!
Hi! The TZ5S and TZ5K are exactly the same other than their colour - S for silver and K for black. We should have prices for both models on the review at cameralabs.
its the hand grip that gets hot after a while. However it doesnt affect the camera in any way and it still functioins perfectly overall an awesome cam
hi there, ive got this camera and ive read up on your website that if you put it above ISO 200 then there's noise. However i've dona that and its still the same. Does the noise refer to actual sound or is it something else??
It's noise in the picture - seen as visible speckles and smearing of fine detail as noise reduction tries to get rid of it. See our noise results and gallery pages to see what I mean.
I've heard mixed things about what the night time shots are like. I love the sound of the camera but im worried at how it would be in concerts as I'd like to get better photos in concerts? I'm not a professional but would like better photos.
Hi i saw your review at cameralabs . com. I was just wondering how bad the mic is for recording videos. I know you mentioned that the sound on digital cameras in general arent good and the TZ5 was pretty ropey, but I was just wondering how bad it is in comparison to other digital cameras in general. I heard it was terrible from a few reviews and people also on here, but i just wanted to confirm with you. I was thinking of buying this particular modal because of the HD video.
The audio isn't great, but some of the problem is how you hold the camera as it's easy to accidentally cover the microphone. There's several owners of the TZ5 discussing this issue in the Panasonic section of the cameralabs forum...
you're looking at approximately 3MB per second of HD footage at 30fps. That would get you just over 11 minutes of 30fps HD with a 2GB file, although Panasonic quotes a maximum length of 15 minutes in any video mode.
Great review, thank you very much! I also checked out your website. Impressed by the effort you've put into the review! I'm quite a photo amateur and not quite sure what "lack of manual control" really means in this matter. I'm interested in taking pictures at various motorsport events, still have a camera for the late night party and being discrete while travelling. I can't seem to find any other camera that fulfills my requirements. Is high-speed photos out of the question?
The problem with using a compact for action is shutter lag - the delay between pressing the button and the picture being taken. For fast response you really need a DSLR. Feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs . com forums if you like...
I'm very much looking into getting one of these, is there any such modes like apeture or shutter priority? If not could you recommend a good compact camera that has also looking for raw file format!!
Weeell, if you want a Panasonic with manual control, check out the new FX500 which we've just tested at cameralabs . com. For RAW, you could go for the older LX2, but the best compact with RAW and manual controls is probably the Canon G9 - again, see our review at cameralabs.
The TZ5 is SDHC compatible, but you'd have to check with Panasonic as to the maximum card size it will support. As for the G9, what dust problems are you referring to? If you currently use a G9, I think you might find the TZ5 a bit too automatic... and the image quality isn't as good. Feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums...
Do you know how to do Time-Lapse Photography with this camera, or ANY camera?

Sorry I gave you a wrong amount of memory for video.
In 16:9 High definition eats 190 mb each minute.
For 4:3 and QVGA is 30mb each minute, but is no good quality.
With a 8gb memory card you can get over 40 minutes of the best resolution from this camera.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I received a Panasonic Lumix TZ5 for Xmas.
Extremely weak flash.
Poor focus and choice of shutter speeds in manual & Ai mode.
Lots of noise, especially at low light levels.
Over softening of pictures.
Poor colour reproduction.
Over exposure & contrast in bright conditions.
Mic & tiny flash in poor positions (your finger covers them).
Tripod mount poor position (falls over when using a mini tripod).
I've gone back to my old Pentax Optio 550 as the TZ5 was ruining too many photos.

I have this camera and give it a 3.5/5. Good things - 10x zoom, 3" lcd, widescreen shot, hd video. Bad things - a little bit bulky.
alooshj 3 years ago
Youve listed some pretty good points there - and only a very minor bad point.
Can you tell me if there are any more bad points about it that make you give it 3.5/5?

how good is the flash on these? im thinking of getting one. anyone know?
liamoner123 3 years ago
This camera has incredible zoom! As far as my opinion is concerned it's not as good as Sony Cyber-shot T300 (what a stylish camera that is)

what about the sound ???? in movie mode
rommeo30 3 years ago
Yes it records sound, but like most still cameras, it's not great - and it's also easy to cover the mic with your finger. See the features page of our full review for more details.

hi what is the diferent betwen the tz3, tz4 and tz5??? which one have a better quality??
dobrazil20 3 years ago
Great review. One question though: On Panasonic's website it says that Lumix DMC-TZ5S can zoom up to 16.7X if you set it in 3MP mode. The camera stores linked from your website bring up TZ5K model. Can you tell if TZ5K has similar zoom capacity with lower resolution like in TZ5S? I plan to buy it through a link to dbuys from CameraLabs pricegrabber, thats the lowest I found. Great work!
retrow 3 years ago
Hi! The TZ5S and TZ5K are exactly the same other than their colour - S for silver and K for black. We should have prices for both models on the review at cameralabs.
cameralabs 3 years ago
a very good review.
and a very good camera.
may consider buying it as im going to the Internation Motor Show this Friday!
ive heard from over reviews that some people have tacken the TZ5 back because the batter can get very hot or something like that?
is this true?
thank you.
AlexJamesB 3 years ago
I haven't experienced this issue.
cameralabs 3 years ago
its the hand grip that gets hot after a while. However it doesnt affect the camera in any way and it still functioins perfectly overall an awesome cam
20NDA 3 years ago
2.5fps is pretty good though, much better than the frustratingly slow 1 frame per 4seconds that my pentax optio s20 can do!
Great review by the way.
omidb1 3 years ago
How fast will it take photos, especially when you want to shoot continuously, is it slow between shots?
omidb1 3 years ago
There's always a lag with non-DSLRs. For continuous shooting info, check the features page of the full review at cameralabs . com.

I was wondering if you had did any reviews on GE cameras.

Nope sorry! You can see what cameras I've reviewed by clicking on the reviews tab at cameralabs . com.
cameralabs 3 years ago
hi there, ive got this camera and ive read up on your website that if you put it above ISO 200 then there's noise. However i've dona that and its still the same. Does the noise refer to actual sound or is it something else??
20NDA 3 years ago
It's noise in the picture - seen as visible speckles and smearing of fine detail as noise reduction tries to get rid of it. See our noise results and gallery pages to see what I mean.

I've heard mixed things about what the night time shots are like. I love the sound of the camera but im worried at how it would be in concerts as I'd like to get better photos in concerts? I'm not a professional but would like better photos.

Hello
Please help. I have problem with my TZ5 and video 16:9H, 30fps :(
Does anyone has a problem with video recording in full HD mode on cards 8gb class 6 PQI?
Interrupt recording and shows me a message that reads "Burn the film canceled because of restrictions on speed memory card."
What's wrong?
The problem does not occur on slower cards (SD 2GB, 4GB)
Strange!
Kiekrz 3 years ago
Maybe it's an issue with 8GB cards or your particular model of 8GB card. I'm afraid I haven't used an 8GB card with this camera, so can't say.
cameralabs 3 years ago
Ok, thanks.
Kiekrz 3 years ago
My 8GB SDHC class 6 Transcend performs great.
ReFreshRC 3 years ago
same here, I have the same card as yours and it performs flawlessly with the TZ5...
alpez03 3 years ago
Some cameras wont support 8gb so stick with a 4gb
jdprice455 3 years ago
Hi i saw your review at cameralabs . com. I was just wondering how bad the mic is for recording videos. I know you mentioned that the sound on digital cameras in general arent good and the TZ5 was pretty ropey, but I was just wondering how bad it is in comparison to other digital cameras in general. I heard it was terrible from a few reviews and people also on here, but i just wanted to confirm with you. I was thinking of buying this particular modal because of the HD video.
garwith 3 years ago
The audio isn't great, but some of the problem is how you hold the camera as it's easy to accidentally cover the microphone. There's several owners of the TZ5 discussing this issue in the Panasonic section of the cameralabs forum...

whats this known as in Australia? did u say TZ15 or TZ50??
dual89 3 years ago
TZ15 - find out more in our full review at cameralabs . com.
cameralabs 3 years ago
you're looking at approximately 3MB per second of HD footage at 30fps. That would get you just over 11 minutes of 30fps HD with a 2GB file, although Panasonic quotes a maximum length of 15 minutes in any video mode.
that is 4 times the size of 848x480 video

I want this cameraaaaaaaaaa!!!
selitosone 3 years ago
Great review, thank you very much! I also checked out your website. Impressed by the effort you've put into the review! I'm quite a photo amateur and not quite sure what "lack of manual control" really means in this matter. I'm interested in taking pictures at various motorsport events, still have a camera for the late night party and being discrete while travelling. I can't seem to find any other camera that fulfills my requirements. Is high-speed photos out of the question?
draj 3 years ago
The problem with using a compact for action is shutter lag - the delay between pressing the button and the picture being taken. For fast response you really need a DSLR. Feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs . com forums if you like...
cameralabs 3 years ago
I'm very much looking into getting one of these, is there any such modes like apeture or shutter priority? If not could you recommend a good compact camera that has also looking for raw file format!!
barnesnet 3 years ago
Weeell, if you want a Panasonic with manual control, check out the new FX500 which we've just tested at cameralabs . com. For RAW, you could go for the older LX2, but the best compact with RAW and manual controls is probably the Canon G9 - again, see our review at cameralabs.
cameralabs 3 years ago
I've weighed things up and may decide on the TZ5. Any idea what the maximum size SD card it can take is? I guess it is SDHC compatible?
I love the G9 (just selling my old G5) but have heard the reviews on the dust collection problems.
barnesnet 3 years ago
The TZ5 is SDHC compatible, but you'd have to check with Panasonic as to the maximum card size it will support. As for the G9, what dust problems are you referring to? If you currently use a G9, I think you might find the TZ5 a bit too automatic... and the image quality isn't as good. Feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums...
