Please upload more videos of you playing man! You're honestly one of my favorite musicians now, and I need more than the 5 or so videos i can find on youtube haha.
@NeverLandQM Yes, but what the hell is a chapman stick? Is it a guitar? Is it a bass? Is a synth? How is it tuned? Fuck you if you think I'm going to figure any of this out for myself.
@HurricaneTBag Relax man, no need to be rude. A Chapman stick is basically a giant fretboard. it has both bass strings and guitar strings (melody strings basically)
It's intended to play with a touch-style method- or simply tapping. Since it's not a very common instrument, tunings may vary. Kevin Keith stated himself that he tunes his bass strings in 5ths and melody strings in 4ths.
the stick isn't by definition a synth instrument.
I just figured you could google all of that yourself.
This is absolutely amazing. You are an amazing musician. I just discovered the stick and am looking about getting one, it seems like a great instrument and very expressive.
Hi, you are amazing! It is a powerful instrument and you are a great player very talented. I was wondering if you could tell me the name of your band or albums you have so I can buy them and one question regarding the stick, I'm planing to buy one but does my Vox Vt30 (guitar amp) works for the Stick? or do I need to buy a different amp. Also the effects you are using, that pedal board, is it for guitar if it isn't where can I get it?
Kevin Keith and Rob Martino compose and perform on The Stick in the most fluid and tasteful ways that I've ever seen and heard.
I would love to play too, but it seems to be too much for this dyslexic. 6 string bass is about as close as I'll get, so, even more, I appreciate all competent Stick players and have mad respect for those of you who really give it a go, regardless of your level of skill and style.
I have been looking at these instuments for a while and they look amazing, i am considering the basic ten string model but I was wondering if it would be better to get the Ten String Grand (larger string spacing) considering that i only play bass, and guitar. What is your take on it?
@5ieni For a beginning player I recommend a standard 10 string with standard tuning. When I purchased my first Stick I decided to go with everything standard and that has worked out well for me.
I know how it sounds, but Kevin let me play with his stick when I met him in Ventura. He's also a great vocalist and song writer. A really nice and really talented guy.
I saw Kevin Keith at a Stick Night in LA a few years ago and I bought his "The EP" CD and I still play it today. No doubt this guy is one of the most soulful Stick players and writers out there, but what really blew me away is how nice he is to talk to; very humble and approachable.
Finally, someone using a different tone besides the generic guitar tone that almost all Chapman players use. I think the Stick would be more popular if people heard it used with a nicer tone. Sound is EVERYTHING.
I'm sure the Stick has an enormous range, and I'm sure the right musician could do a lot of interesting things with it. With stubby hands like mine....I'll stick to guitar and bass.
No disrespect intended at all, you're fantastic at this, but what's the point of a stick? Like, it just seems kinda like a piano except in a different style. Again, no disrespect, but that's just what I was wondering.
Very good question! . You are right about piano concept in some way , but Its more than a piano, because you move in 4 "dimensions" from left to right and up and down the bridge( not like piano just left to right)...... continue
You also got the string touch with all off its expresion and dinamic posibilities, giving, for example, vibrato to an entire chord. And more, you have 2 separate output signals(for each set of srtrings, one tuned in fourth and the other in fifhs) and you can add midi too.
Hope this coment help to answer your question IOdjimmy.
Yeah, I see what you're saying about 4 dimensions, I think it kinda limits what you can do on the stick, as supposed to the bass where you can do different styles in a wider variety, I guess it's kinda hard to compare a bass and a stick, 'cause they're really different
Actually, I don't think it limits the stick so much as the opposite. The stick gives you so much range that you can do a variety of basslines, plus chords and melody at the same time. Maybe you can't do everything on a stick that you could on a bass, but you can do a whole lot more that a bass or a guitar can't do. In that, sense, you were right when you said its hard to compare
@l0rdjimmy The main difference in techniques between the bass and the stick though aren't that different. You tap the stick, you can strum it, you can pop and slap it. You can hook effects and petals upto it. I am a bass player. But I think the stick has more to offer then the bass. Just because you can play whole songs, bass and melodic with multiple strings at all times.
@diaphanoux Well for sure. The bass is one of the most important instruments in North American music and all most main genres, country, metal, R&B. I like when certain guitarists claim that bass is the lesser of a guitar. When in every commercial you see hear on TV most every song played these days and every track for a movie has a bass in it. Much more basses being played in any of those then guitars.
men if i had the money i defenetly would buy a stick is my dream, i live in argentina and i have seen G. cides about four times is such an amazing instrument i love it i have your CD's very good tune, kevin u rock i love your groove, well see u when i have an stick :(
Im very inspired by your playing. I play Bass Guitar and Drums. I listen to all kinds of Jazz, Mainly Fusion. I just bought your band's cd and its amazing. Im soon going to buy a stick guitar, I was wondering what would be the best model to get im very confused with all the options on the site, thanks
Thanks for checking out video, the compliments on my playing and for supporting my music.
For a beginning player I recommend a standard 10 string with standard tuning. Woods and inlays are normally a personal preference. As far as pickups or electronics go, its really based on how you plan to use the instrument. I was originally a bassist so I chose electronics to give me strength on the bottom (left hand) with my right hand adding the color.
oh my God. That funk groove at 00:45 honestly speaks to my soul. Wow. Really, i think i need a cigarette after that. Is that original? is that a song you wrote? direct me to where i can buy an album with that or buy it on itunes or something please.
I have one more question, i´m going for a Chapman Stick, and I`m getting information about the woods and configuration.
.-Which Stick configuration do yo use? , meaning woods, pickups, etc.
.- I was looking for some Guitar Synth and U have a Question: Does exist some Synth that could make the work of processing both, bass strings and guitar strings, simultaneously?
I play 10 string sticks with the standard tuning configuration.
I think the wood on my "synth" stick is maple but I need to make sure. The wood was a personal preference. I prefer the look and feel of lighter woods.
The synth electronics are two Roland Gk-2a pickups, one for the melody strings and one for the bass strings.
There are no guitar synths that will process 10 strings at once so you must use 2 units. Its actually more powerful using 2 synths.
