One of the best rock and roll songs ever written. Sax of the 50's, Great lyrics, soulfull melody, beautiful piano, great singing, a lastly great duel hardrocking guitars. for me this doesn't get much better. It has a little bit of everything. Just pure Rock and Roll.
Is there a full show of the 2nd night? The DVD is one of my fav. concerts ever. Never much of a Springsteen fan until I saw that. Then I really got it.
@jericoacoara There's a DVD of the night before this one. Look up "Bruce Springsteen Hammersmith Odeon, London '75 DVD". Google it, or go to Amazon. One of my all time favorite shows by anyone, ever.
@xtrm1 Not hardly, but thanks for asking. The music is awesome; I can't stand his 'singing.' In this vid he reminds me of the homeless guy who lives in an alley behind my office building, passing the time throwing feces at tourists. Sometimes if I see him on the way to my car and he's sleeping, I'll walk up and pour the cold remnants of that morning's coffee on his head and spit on his face.
@kaninz Don't quote me on it, but I think it's actually, "The Devil appeared like Jesus through the steam in the street..." which I have always found to be one of the great lines ever in rock lyrics. The Boss was a damn fine poet in his young early days.
one of the best DVDs I own!

Your heart starts beatin' faster as you struggle to your feet
Then you're outa that hole and back up on the street
And them South Side sisters sure look pretty
The cripple on the corner cries out, "Nickels for your pity."
And them downtown boys sure talk gritty
It's so hard to be a saint in the city

Them gasoline boys downtown sure talk gritty
It's so hard to be a saint in the city
I was the king of the alley, mama, I could talk some trash
I was the prince of the paupers crowned downtown at the beggar's bash
I was the pimp's main prophet I kept everything cool
Just a backstreet gambler with the luck to lose
And when the heat came down it was left on the ground
The devil appeared like Jesus through the steam in the street
Showin' me a hand I knew even the cops couldn't beat

I had skin like leather and the diamond-hard look of a cobra
I was born blue and weathered but I burst just like a supernova
I could walk like Brando right into the sun
Then dance just like a Casanova
With my blackjack and jacket and hair slicked sweet
Silver star studs on my duds just like a Harley in heat
When I strut down the street I could hear its heart beat
The sisters fell back and said, "Don't that man look pretty."
The cripple on the corner cried out, "Nickels for your pity."

Check out Clarence Clemons in the background in the white suit and top hat, jamming on the sax. He was always the coolest guy on stage.

The Devil appeared through the steam in the street.
And he showed me a hand I knew even the cops couldn't beat..."
If you ask me that's the best line Bruce ever wrote. A close second would be the opening line from Incident On 57th Street.
