Different time back then. The reason the boss man paused was not out of fear of riot. The guard are armed with shotguns and would not hesitate with shoot to kill. However, when Lee's father in law George Washington Parke Custis died , Lee inherited hundred's of slaves. It is well Documented about Lee tracking down three runaways.
