@HarryHardcash This movie was about being anti-establishment. At the time the establishment was not about party affiliation. If you recall and maybe you don't the GOP held the Presidency but little else in Federal Government and even less in state governments across this nation and certainly in the South. Paul Newman is the classic anti-hero in this film. One of my favorites of all time.
Different time back then. The reason the boss man paused was not out of fear of riot. The guard are armed with shotguns and would not hesitate with shoot to kill. People from the South sometimes speak more slowly or insert pauses in their speech. That and I'm sure the director was going for dramatic effect.
And that wasn't a black dildo, it was a billie jack or billy club. Google it.
Notice how the warden hesitates his speech 'cause he knows he did wrong by hitting the prisoner, maybe thinking for just a second that the other men would riot. Classic writing and acting.
People can't act like this anymore. The more old movies I watch, the more I see how pathetic newer movies are. . .maybe they've got problems with communication.
He had 2 years to do for parking meters. He acted like he had a life in prison sentence. All this bs he did plus get added time for more BS. Luke is a dumbass, Great movie, a must own for a collection, but Luke is an idiot for sure.
@hotdog2020 I've not seen the movie so it's possible you're entirely right, but are you telling me you'd want to spend two years under the Failure To Communicate guy? He seems a bit blackjack happy.
@Ayanami555 Don't get me wrong the work and chain gang would really suck. I would yea then have more time added for being a dunce. I love this movie just a thought I always had about it.
NO @k5r2an it's not a BlackDildo. It's aLead Weighted Black Jack. They take a Chunk of Lead Shaped into a Round Long Piece, then attach it to a Big Spring, then Wrap It In Leather with a Leather Loop on the other end to act as a Wrist Strap. You HitThem with it & the Lead Swings on through their Body or Head. Some people call them Saps. As shown in the Movie it will lay someone out! If it's busts their Skull they can Die. My Grandfather Made & CarriedOne. I still have it but the Leather is WornOut!
Classic! One of my favorites. Never piss "The Boss" off! Wow..this makes me miss the old character actors like Strother Martin. Thanx for a great post.
That black thing is called a 'sap' or a 'blackjack'. It's like a leather sock filled with buckshot. They are considered deadly weapons, but cops used to use them before tasers. They aren't as bulky as nightsticks, and pack a huge hit. Ouch.
@ForgottenMemoriesFM Yeah yeah the camera angle exaggerates it. But the potential to get seriously injured is always possible. That's why multi-million dollar insurance policies are taken out on these stars.
SNL did a great parody of this w/ Bill Murray as Newman and Strother reprising his role, except it wasn't a prison but a camp that forced the campers to learn to speak french. BIll didn't want any part of it, and would rebel/escape, being caught by guards with french poodles.
The big joke was around this line: "What we got here is failure to communicate bilingually" then he would try to force Bill to say 'the little cat" in french, ('le chat e petite" or something) That should be on youtube.
I had a job doing security once,,,I loved the job but hated my boss,,but he sounded like the captain so one night I recorded this line from the movie on my voice mail just to mock him when he called me,,,it was great!
i vote for the captain, he is just doing his job and upholding civilization! he doesn't like it, but without men like him, civilization would grind to a halt. it would all be man against man in a fight to the death.
With respect ... I don't think there is a 'best scene' in the movie Cool Hand Luke. Every single scene is great. It's close to being the perfect film. And for me personally I think it's one of the best films ever made in the long history of movies.
"What we got here is failure to communicate. Some men, you just can't reach. So we got here what we had last week. Which is the way he WANTS it....well, he GETS it. And I don't like it any more than you men."
@JojahBoy Jesus dude where did you learn you history... Lee did not own slaves, but that because he was poor growing up. However, when Lee's father in law George Washington Parke Custis died , Lee inherited hundred's of slaves. It is well Documented about Lee tracking down three runaways. Lincoln never owned a slave, all the states he lived in did not allow slavery. Grant's wife family owed slaves. And Grant did use them and bought a slave, but Grant was not opposed to slavery.
Lee set all the slaves he inherited from his father-in-law free. I'm glad you agree Grant was not opposed to slavery. He didn't care and neither did Lincoln. It was just a convenient excuse to rally support for an unconstitutional and illegal war, hence the reason the Emancipation didn't occur until 3 years into the war. As for firing the first shots, the South had seceded. Enemy territory bitches. No ability to secede almost caused there to be no Constitution. All good. Nullification!
Lee didn't own slaves but Grant did, even AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation. Grant burned Atlanta to the ground and then went on a rape/pillage the slave women campaign on his way back up north. Dont forget what he did to indians later.
Unlike Lincoln & Grant, there is no record of Lee ever speaking disparagingly of the black race. Lee actually supported abolition.
Lincoln’s decision to invade the South in order to prevent its secession was both immoral and unconstitutional.
Only goes to prove the war was not about slavery at first. It was about whether a State had the right to secede. Which as ruled by a SOUTHERN controlled Supreme Court, they did not have the right . This was the same court that under Chief Justice Taney made the Dred Scott decision. As far as his decision--the south fired the first shots, the South started the war. So read some real history not your revisionist crap.
