@Por2gesDiesel Be careful with Acetone. It's a great cleaner, but it's very flammable and can catch the car on fire very easily. If cleaning car derails for any reason and there's a spark, the acetone on the pads of the car can ignite. Don't ever leave the car running unattended for sure.
I've heard a lot of good things about that Ballast King from HO folks. Eric I run this cleaner and Atlas track and completely follow the directions. I still end up w/ some of the black film remaining on the top of the rails? It's not filthy but it's not spic and span like when I did it by hand. Do you get about the same results? I don't think there is enough left on the rails to create problems but I'd really like to know if your results are about the same. Thanks.
@Por2gesDiesel There is nothing that will get your rails cleaner than doing it by hand. However, doing it by hand is often impractical, especially when you've got tunnels. Next to cleaning your tack by hand, the CMX does the best job...in my opinion. The small amount of film left behind shouldn't affect operation of the trains. Of course, the amount of film left behind will vary depending on what type of cleaning fluid you use.
You know what would be nice? A train car that could lay its own ballast and spray glue over it then follow up with this track cleaning car. I'd like to see them make THAT.
@ColinTheAwesomest Check out the "ballast king" track ballasting car. It lays the ballast for you and apparently does a fantastic job at it. It doesn't do the glue, though. :)
go gone is my favorite cleaner for track. asitone is what my freind uses for his live steamer. yep. his plastic lgb ties are close to gone where he fulls it.
@SilverLakeRailroad Trust me, you don't want to get the cheapest cleaning car out there as it will be a waste of money. You get what you pay for. If you just don't have that kind of money, you might want to try the cleaning car made by R&L Lines (run a google search for R&L Lines as I can't post the URL here). I've heard good things about their cleaning car and it runs about $80 i think. But honestly, the CMX is the best there is and I wouldn't waste my money on anything cheaper.
@disneylandguy10 The lionel track cleaning car was built more as a toy than a heavy duty cleaning car...in my opinion. It's better than nothing, but it's not as good as newer cleaning cars..
I'm going to borrow one of these. The train club has one. I will be using Goo-Gone (Not my choice. It's what the owner uses.). I would like to use alcohol, but I am working on making my own track cleaning car anyway, so then I can use whatever I want.
yeah, but in my opinion acetone does the best job at cleaning dirty track without leaving a residue behind. You're certainly free to use whatever cleanser you want, though.
Oh. One of your video responses has it painted. I was wondering if you could paint on "Water Only" and put it behind a steamer. I guess it doesn't really matter as I probably won't get it.
Yeah, I wouldn't paint it with anything. That's just asking for trouble. I think of it as a tool and not as something that's supposed to look nice on the layout.
the CMX car works great in any scale. one of the best products on the market. combine with john allens scrubbers on the bottom of the cars and oh man theres some clean track.
Where did you get an 8800 CN SD70M-2! Can I get one for ho scale?

I use the Lionel cleaning car, and as the car moves, the scrubers spin around to clean the track. Would that still be a good way to clean?

I need one. I will use alcohol since I have FastTrack.
Weiberts 2 years ago
You can use acetone on fasttrack, you just have to be carefull that's all. Acetone cleans much better than alcohol in my experience.
esiegel76 2 years ago
I didn't realize how expensive the cars were, so it will be a while before I get one. Maybe it will be a birthday present.
Weiberts 2 years ago
Do you know if you can paint it?
Weiberts 2 years ago
Paint the car? I wouldn't recommend it. This car comes in contact with cleaning fluid all the time so painting it would create a mess.
esiegel76 2 years ago
I mean the outside.
Weiberts 2 years ago
Yeah, so did I. I wouldn't paint anything on it. The fact that it's unpainted metal is what makes it so great. It can't be damaged by any cleaners.
esiegel76 2 years ago
