Question: are you making the disk image just so you can long and transfer the files? or is it a smaller way of storing the footage? (7d files are large) Ive been using compressor to convert the files to prores 422, backing it up, and importing it to fcp. If anyone has a better way for me to do this process, let me know! thanks
very helpful tutorial thank you. my only question is: are you using the files on your hard drive, final cut file or on the disk image? it seems to me this results in 3 copies of the files rather than two. is this the case? or am i missing something?
what are your system specs...i'm looking to trade my pc for a macbook, it's 2GHz i will be using FCP and was going to upgrade the memory...thanks! And also i want a 7D so was wondering if full HD would process correctly!
@nayerbe Apologies, my fingers and my brain don't always work in harmony, a simple typo I'm afraid. In fact, the 7D uses CF cards so even the reference to SD cards is a little misleading. Anyway, what is important is that I label each one of my cards uniquely, e.g, SD01, SD02. My point is that when I ingest these, I suggest managing a unique naming convention. In my case, I increment the number, i.e. MSD0001, MSD0002 etc every time I ingest content. The naming convention is up to you.
This is a great tutorial, I have been transcoding to ProRes 422 (HQ) and everything was going well. About 34 folders later, all I am getting is the big red exclamation mark!! Have you had issues with larger projects? I am working on a documentary and I have transcoded all of A camera but now I cannot get this plug-in to work on B camera. Final Cut keeps crashing! I was thinking of uninstalling the plug in and then reinstalling it - Any words of wisdom?
@Daklatus I am not sure why you are now seeing problems, but one thing to be wary of, is not to do anything whilst log & capture is running. i.e. don't switch focus or try to do anything else in FCP as this can result in clips being truncated. I also note there is an update to the plugin from Canon.
I have a question. Anyone can respond if you know. Is there a way to Hook up my 7D and import directly from the 7D to FCP. Cause i don't own a CF card reader. Yes i know they are like $5.00 but I'm just asking can you import from the camera to FCP? Also can you use any programs like Adobe on Location to capture video from the Camera to the computer, lets say you only have a 4GB card :-( and you need to take a 10 min video can i just plug in the Camera to the computer and record directlyto thePC
@JifferRiffic: No, this is the fastest way to get it into Final Cut Pro. There is no way to just hook up the 7D and import your files directly into Final Cut Pro. Your movie files wouldn't play smoothly anyway. They need to be converted to Apple Pro Ress before you begin editing.
@RealtyStudioHD ahh thank you. I ended up getting a CF reader and following your videos on how to make the conversion work. I mainly wished that i could record video directly from my 7D to my iMac in like lets say Adobe OnLocation, This is what i use on my Canon XH-A1s camcorder, its nice cause you can see right then and there color scale and make adjustments. I do know that this HD video is SLR's are still a young technology. Hopefully in the future maybe.
@chromajube Sorry for the confusion. Canon 7D uses CF cards. For some reason that I cannot explain other than the fact I did the tutorial in the wee hours, I am referring to them as SD cards.

emm.. you don't really need to do this procedure AT ALL... in the finder, click on your computer.. then you'll see the CF card as a drive.. then hold down option and drag and it'll copy everything... just place it in a folder. and then point the log and capture to the folder.. it works fine.. no needing to make a disk image or anything. :)
@crisblyth Absolutely right, but you miss the point. This procedure is to mimic a 'tape' workflow and provide a convenient way to catalog your SD cards. Ideally the dmg should be backed up for future ref on another media drive. If you then delete the folder locally, you can go back to the dmg, remount it and FCP will online the media. With a tape workflow, you generally make copies of the tape, ingest it, and store the tape for safe keeping. This is kind of the same thing but for SD cards.
@madpanictv oh, perhaps you misunderstand me:) I'm saying that you can copy the entire drive/disk, including the hierarchy so that the FCP importer will 'see' it, but do it without needing to make a DMG file. it's the same data, and FCP will still see it, but there's just less steps. :) I still backup all my originals, but without using DMG files, and I can (at any time) allow the transfer plugin to re-load it etc.
@aaronbernakevitch If you only have the .MOV files and you want to use the plugin, then create a folder with DCIM/101EOS7D. In that folder copy any .THM you have, but make sure it matches the filename of the .MOV you want. i.e. if you have MVI_1234.MOV copy over an existing .THM to MVI_1234.THM. This will have the wrong metainformation in, but will enable you to import via the plugin. You may need to check the media settings after import for things like frame rate etc if they don't match.
@madpanictv hey there... I followed the videos instructions with one exception. I ejected the card right after transfering it to the comp and wiped it. Then after double clicking on my dmg, I opened FCP and log and transfer, but the dmg files didn't show up. When double clicking on the dmg it doesn't create another drive to log and transfer from. Does that make sense? Could you help me out?
@backpocket22 Do you still have the folder on your computer that you copied the files over (before creating the dmg). If so then you should still have your files.
@aaronbernakevitch you create a similar folder structure DCIM/100EOS7D and place your .MOV files in there. In addition, grab any .THM file copy it and rename it so it matches your .MOV. EOS plugin needs this. i.e if you .MOV file is called MVI_0050.MOV, then copy a .THM to be MVI_0050.THM. Do this for every .MOV and it should work.
Hey great tutorial. I was just wondering why I cannot see my canon 7d when I connect it to the computer. It works with Image Capture and EOS Utility fine just cant see it in my finder as a devise??? I got a card reader but I think it might not be working properly or something.. Could you suggest anything else???

I'm confused by your folder naming conventions. Why do you go from calling the card SD02 to MDS0020 and in the next vid MDS0021?
