I have recently bought 1/144 scale models of the main protagonists of the Air War over Vietnam and I have been surprised at how TINY the MiG-21 looked compared to the F-8 Crusader or the F-4 Phantom...even the F-5 looked massive beside it.
We're conditioned by u.s. propaganda to imagine Soviet Technology as bulky and lumbering, but reality shows how USSR engineers managed many times to achieve designs which were sleek, nimble and visually appealing, even in decades past!
@RealKull i must have missed out on that propaganda. who thought their stuff was big and bulky? It was usually light weight simple and more crude, but effective
So amazing NVA Mig-21 can shoot down USAF/USN fighters. Sure they had some tactical advantages but that's like having a flyweight boxer knockout a heavyweight boxer. Of course, once the Americans learnt its weakness, it was relatively easy to shoot down. Still, the best US ace was like only 5 or 6 kills then the brass made sure they "retired" and used them for recruitment purposes while the NVAF kept their aces fighting and flying. These little Vietnamese pilots were very tough!
@AccordGTR I do agree that considering that the Vietnamese aces are very good considering the dire situation, but I disagree that American pilots retired after getting five or six kills. Sure SOME were retired to be used in recruiting but the best American aces also had around 60 kills if I remember correctly.
@lordazn your thinking about world war 2 no one since then has 60 kills. The aces weren't retired there was only seven months between the first ace and the ceasefire, they would have either gone home after completing their tour or stopped flying combats missions. There were five american aces two of them flying in the same plane and only two out of the five were pilots
