If it was my call on what to do with that Orca male in FL, I would of let him go back to the ocean. He was not born and raised in captivity. He was taken from the ocean. "Only", if we had to keep him for breeding, would he remain in my water park. Even though part of me says "Put him down" for drowning that sweetheart, I wouldn't do it, but then again, what if she was my daughter? My sister? My wife? I probably would say throw some super toxic poison fish down his throat right now!
I don't think majority of these Orca's are unhappy with their environment and treatment or want to harm trainers, but from time to time, you get an Orca, like these giant males, that just flip out and kill. When you have a case resulting in a fatality, either put it to sleep, keep it for breeding only or let it go back in the ocean. Never let that animal in a show ever again. 2 trainers and an idiot who jumped in the tank were killed by the same Orca bull whale.
To me, shows like this simply make a mockery of the animal. Yes they are cute and intelligent - but they should be observed from a distance in their natural habitats, not essentially captured and imprisoned in this circus to entertain us. It's all wrong to me. Surely to see their true beauty and potential we should see them as they're meant to be? as nature intended?
Fuck all of you who approve of this and goes to Seaworld, you are either ignorant or fucking demented parasites! The first common death for these beautiful and intelligent animals in captivity is suicide.
Ohh its so beautiful!!! But i feel so sorry 4 him/her!!! I mean in nature they live with like all there family!! One group can be like 25-50 whales!!! And that tank is way to small even if it was double the size of what it is now it still would be to small!!! They should live free in the ocean god damn it!!! Orcas "killerwhales" are the most beautiful creatur on the planet and i think this is cruel and wrong!!!
omg.. Vivienleigh1097, you tell 'let them decide what they like to do' uhm, they have no choice?? They were forced into that tank, I don't think they asked SeaWorld to take away their freedom..
Even former trainers will tell you - these animals are far too large, intelligent, and social to be kept humanely in a captive environment. Housing orcas and dolphins in concrete tanks, having them perform for shows that lack any sort of educational value is just ethically wrong.
Why cant we all just shut up... Come on.. like really ? This is NOT ABUSE to the animals, most of the whales loves to do it (Of coarse non of yall would know becuase youve never worked with them) let them decide what they like to do, its not of to you to determine it. I love the Killer Whale shows. (:
@vivienleigh1097 I can't tell if you're just trolling, but if you didn't know an Orca's lifespan is much wider when they are in the sea and not kept in holding, in a little pool, with vacuums that stress the animal out, only so that they can do tricks for treats (which is also a stressful thing to have to be trained to do) so that you can "..love the Killer Whale shows. (:". Go watch the Cove, and guess for yourself how much dolphins love it.
It seems like a lot people don't know a lot about Killer Whales. These whales travel in group and they don't take in other killer whales outside of their group. The problem with Free Willy is they released him hoping he would join the group of killer whales there but they dont take in outside killer whales. So Free Willy did not die because of human contact but because he was reunited with his orignal heard that he died of lonelyness.
At this point it wouldnt be a good idea to release the animals that have been raised by them set free, because their whole lives they've had someone feed them and care for them.they would die in a matter of months.it comes natrual to some animals but not to all.thats what happen to the whale from free willy they faught to get get released and after a few months hs body was found, becasue he wasnt familiar with that livestyle.
i agree these animals are wild and should live free but on the other hand if they set them back into the wild now they would'nt know what to do cause they have had people look after them, but the major thing now about setting these free in that there are 100 of thousands poching them it's not fair!
It's amazing how easily they get on and off the "beaches". I've seen wild whales do this on ice floes but they never look quite so practiced at it. These guys must perform a lot...
I feel sorry for them living in a small pool like that, I wish they could build these places in a small bay or natural harbour so that they'd have natural sea water and more space...
Funny how on the screen they show a whale that is free in the ocean and yet right in front of you they are in jail. Also, your comment about harpooning, yes, harpooning is bad but at least those whales knew what it was like to be free!
I honestly feel like crying. It's my life dream to see an orca in real life, but living in South Africa I have no opportunities to do this. One day I'll save up and travel to Florida to make my dream come true.
Especially whales caught from the wild, obviously that's how it started, but I think its slightly more acceptable if the whales are bred in captivity.
Sea World is probably the best park thing like this.
The tanks are decent sized although i'd still prefer much bigger.
The trainers seem to really love these animals and care for them properly.
I have a question, i notice there is like two tanks with gaps inbetween where the whales can go through, when the shows aren't going on, do they open the gate things so the whales have the backpool and the one they perform in?:)
Just for record, I don't agree with keeping marine animals in captivity.
Tilikum had only one incident (dawn) he was not trained properly to interact with trainers in the pool
..the first incident was a female trainer who fell in the tank with tili and two other female orcas. The second a 27 yr old man stayed hidden in the park hid from security and entered tili pool naked, he was found dead on top of tili and autopsy showed he died of hypothermia and had no physical trauma. I believe any marine mammals kept in captivity is wrong. Despite positive reinforced training
I no longer support Sea World after their continued "use" of Telly (the whale) in their shows after he killed several trainers because the whale still turns a profit. Orcas are amazing creatures that should remain in the open seas, not in tiny tanks performing so people can see "tricks." Sea World no longer stands for educating the public, but rather contributing to the animals' exploitation in the name of money.
@morbidlives I think it's a bit tight to stop supporting SW because they brought Tilikum back. If Tilikum wasn't brought back, he would have spent the rest of his days getting fat and swimming constant circles in his backpool.
i love shamu! he is so cute, and he is beautiful too! just because he killed a trainer in the water, people hate him! I MEAN it was an ACCIDENT!!! jees people!
amazing show they just need to make the tanks at least 3 times bigger. and add natural elements like rocks/big pebbles and some aquatic plants. and of course live fish for them to catch/hunt. like keiko's tank when he retired at sea world (rip)
I'm personally against killing whales, though it's not illegal to do it in Norway, Japan and Greenland! It's legal. I personally also find whale captivity, like what Sea World does is wrong! It's cruel. Another thing I didn't like about that show is that they ask you to clap for soldiers in the us army, though Sea World is a tourist attraction, and there might as well be people that have lost loved ones on the other side of that war.
No matter how well they take care of them, its a killer whale. Its called like that because its in its nature to kill whales 3 times bigger than its own size. If you think of that, and the fact that they swim miles in the wild, its just dumb to have these animals in captivity.
It's the SeaWorld pimps...Torturing animal prisoners so families can have a night of laughs is despicable. "Are ethics something we adhere to only when it's convenient?"
dolphins and whales are realllly something else, they are so intelligent...but i BELIEVE they should NOT be in a tank for amusement. They deserve to roam free:] <3
@DMSteller87 SeaWorld is too greedy to have a heart. SeaWorld is purely a money making amusement park with a some conservation crap on the side to appease the public. Many SeaWorld visitors are clueless that many of these captives whales and dolphins are dying very young and the overbreeding program is killing the female orcas; SeaWorld teaches NOTHING except to ignore the pain of these creatures and exploit them. Google: "The Orca Project"
@cheppo6 Not all, cause like Free willy. He was from young of by humans, and when they set him free, he went to the coast to see humans, and he died cause of ''humans'' atleast being around them.. made him sick. so in some cases, they should stay.
@cheppo6 Then I'm guessing you don't have any pet fish, cats, dogs, birds or anything else either... and you tell everyone that does, to set them all free.
u r sooo lucky id loved 2 go 2 orlando 2 see this show !!x my friend saw his show and said it was amazing unfortunately we spent 5000 pounds for me and my brother be tutored so we couldnt go bt hopefully now we might get a chance 2 go !
I went to sea world in kindergarten with my class and we weren't able to sit that close because we couldn't get wet, I was pissed!...my brother went on the same trip about two years later in his kindergarten class with my mom and they didn't even get to see Shamu!
where is this sea world located ? It is going to be one of my wishes n dreams to see this beautiful creature in action... Man... Sometimes i wish they should be free to live in their own world :(
lol the exciting behaviors? aaight.. killer whales are even smarter than dolphins. they can kill great white shark if they want to. I think its not right to put this huge animals in a little tank, if you want to see how they really are go on a whale expedition on the islands of africa or something. you'll enjoy their show much more than here.
4 orcas have died in the last 4 months in seaworld. Living in a bath tub, having an artificial diet and living in chemically treated water in an environment that puts tremendous stress on their bodies, no orca in captivity has lived the age of 40, in the wild they live to be 60-80 years old.
SeaWorld has spent decades trying to convince the world that, such a creature belongs in small concrete tanks. The evidence has been mounting for at least 25 years that this is flatly untrue.
I just can't help but find this disturbing! A killer whale cannot be trusted like that, they're wild animals. They belong in the wild.
I don't care if it's an enjoyable show cos I wouln't pay to see something like that, it's a form of mistreatment. They are NOT supposed to be in close contact with humans. That trainer looks like a seal in that wetsuit like....
You can't just shrug it off. That trainer who was drowned by Tilikum last year is dead because she got too close, too trusting.
u can trash this all u want but each trainer has a unique & beautiful bond w/ their whale. thats not something u can just hop in their tank & do. they spend all of their time w/ them and give them the best care. the shows make SeaWorld able 2 afford 2 give them the best care they should be paid 4 all they have invested n it. nothing is free. bottom line the whales love doing their tricks they get treats & praise they r social animals & enjoy it
Close relationship? Im sure given the chance between a "close relationship" and a free life, they would pick the latter. Unfortunatley, you douches are too ignorant to let them be free.
I was in SeaWorld Orlando at 4 september 2010. The show is very different, it's a beautiful show, but after the tragedy the humans not swimming more...
Killer Whales are such a beautiful species! They are very intelligent and are very great swimmers :)
What I like about Sea World is that they are doing everything they can to protect such a great species. Yeah, sometimes accidents happen, but overall I find it a great opportunity to see these amazing creatures up close :) I just saw this show for the second time in my life on Saturday, and I loved it!
Seaworld is doing nothing to protect killer whales. Such poor things forced to live in a shallow concrete tank their entire lives. Their teeth have holes drilled into them, they are forced to breed when they're too young, they are fed frozen fish with no nutritional value..the list goes on. I feel terrible for them. I would love to see a killer whale close up but I just cannot support Seaworld for keeping these beautiful creatures in a life of imprisonment for pure entertainment.
@xkxdestinyx False. The pools are very very deep, they do not drill holes in there teeth, and SeaWorld can't force a killer whale to breed. You can't force any animal to breed. Do more research first,
@xkxdestinyx what if they like to perform and entertain people.. its possible......but maybe you are right maybe they hate it. well we all have opinions
Being in a tank is torture to these animals. They need space and to be able to fufill their instinctual behaviors. Imagine your primary sense being sound, being put in a pool and having hundreds of people screaming, laughing, cheering, and music blaring. You'd go crazy. These animals don't live more than 25 yrs in captivity (in the wild they live 50 yrs sometimes up to 80yrs). They need to stop. All of them.
@Jamanprince And why do people this. They want to make monay with this animals. For example, a dolphin costs ca. 150.000 dollar and they earn 1mill. dollar with this animal in one year. When they want to protect this animals they can do other things to do that. People who think that the animals are happy in their little goldfisch bowl are naive. Whales who live in captivity can't live in the ocean and this is a indication that this whales are not living like a free whal, as it should be.
i'm sorry but watching a girl ride a whale like its a raft is a little boring... I mean, people want to DO that--not watch it... what's the point in watching someone else do what you wanna do? I wouldn't pay to see that...would you pay to SEE me devour a chocolate cake? Or do something really fun? No...why would you??? Yawn.
@LBTennis None..not at all... but that's beside the point. I do think it's impressive to see the trainers perform acrobatics with the animals....but if you read my original comment... watching her ride the whale like a raft does not qualify as impressive, interesting or entertaining... MOST of this show is pretty lame.
@MeredithOD You sound like someone that no one wants to hang out with bc all you do is make people feel down. I think riding on a massive killer whale that should be munching on you instead of being your friend is pretty damn impressive.
@MeredithOD Im simply talking about them being predators just like us. They have incredible brains just like us to be able to understand complex ideas such as remembering an entire routine like these. I dont understand how it doesnt amaze you that 2 otherwise completely different species are capable of interacting in these ways. Maybe if justin Bieber was doing a live performance and tweeting about it while on a unicycle and giving ugly girls makeovers all while riding shamu, then you would be
I JUST WENT YESTERDAY!!! It was awesome!!! But it was so diffrent from this one. But many reasons for that. (We know... We know...) But I went at night so there were lights and everything it was cool. It was called ShamuROCKS. So it was kinda like a rock concert with Shamu I guess lol.
for real I mean it is fun to go and see these animals, BUT YOU CAN JUST AS EASILY SEE THEM IN THE WILD! How would you like to live in a cage about as big as your basement? It is a lot cooler seeing them in wild anyway.
the last part where there side by side that is the best experience ever in the world orca next to you then the girl next 2 her i would love to do that xxxxxxxx

@JirayiaSage keiko the whale of free willy. That poor whal living like a slave.

@cheppo6 i know. some americans are real douchebags can't they see animals are people too? God created this world for both Human AND Animal.
JirayiaSage 8 months ago
@cheppo6 Not all, cause like Free willy. He was from young of by humans, and when they set him free, he went to the coast to see humans, and he died cause of ''humans'' atleast being around them.. made him sick. so in some cases, they should stay.
SSonyv 5 months ago
@cheppo6 Then I'm guessing you don't have any pet fish, cats, dogs, birds or anything else either... and you tell everyone that does, to set them all free.

lol the exciting behaviors? aaight.. killer whales are even smarter than dolphins. they can kill great white shark if they want to. I think its not right to put this huge animals in a little tank, if you want to see how they really are go on a whale expedition on the islands of africa or something. you'll enjoy their show much more than here.
blitziee 1 year ago
4 orcas have died in the last 4 months in seaworld. Living in a bath tub, having an artificial diet and living in chemically treated water in an environment that puts tremendous stress on their bodies, no orca in captivity has lived the age of 40, in the wild they live to be 60-80 years old.
SeaWorld has spent decades trying to convince the world that, such a creature belongs in small concrete tanks. The evidence has been mounting for at least 25 years that this is flatly untrue.

skyliecp 1 year ago
I just can't help but find this disturbing! A killer whale cannot be trusted like that, they're wild animals. They belong in the wild.
I don't care if it's an enjoyable show cos I wouln't pay to see something like that, it's a form of mistreatment. They are NOT supposed to be in close contact with humans. That trainer looks like a seal in that wetsuit like....
You can't just shrug it off. That trainer who was drowned by Tilikum last year is dead because she got too close, too trusting.

I cried when he kissed the killer whale
Very intelligent animals
He should be released back to the sea

@phunkyyall
your dumb. Nobody kills killerwhales for their fins.
THEY DO THAT WITH SHARKS. IT'S CALLED SHARK FIN SOUP.
The tanks in Seaworld are filled with chlorine. They have skin lesions and diseases.
I would much rather swim in a sea that is polluted than swimming in a concrete tank in my own faeces and bits of rotting fish.
xkxdestinyx 11 months ago
u can trash this all u want but each trainer has a unique & beautiful bond w/ their whale. thats not something u can just hop in their tank & do. they spend all of their time w/ them and give them the best care. the shows make SeaWorld able 2 afford 2 give them the best care they should be paid 4 all they have invested n it. nothing is free. bottom line the whales love doing their tricks they get treats & praise they r social animals & enjoy it

Is it the blond hair girl who drowned from the killer wale?

Close relationship? Im sure given the chance between a "close relationship" and a free life, they would pick the latter. Unfortunatley, you douches are too ignorant to let them be free.

@Jamanprince the cove! look it and you hate sea world and other dolphin- shows and so on that poor animals =(
cheppo6 1 year ago
@Jamanprince
I would love to see a killer whale close up but I just cannot support Seaworld for keeping these beautiful creatures in a life of imprisonment for pure entertainment.
xkxdestinyx 11 months ago 9
@xkxdestinyx: the most wise thing i've ever heard :)
Linngabriella 11 months ago
@xkxdestinyx False. The pools are very very deep, they do not drill holes in there teeth, and SeaWorld can't force a killer whale to breed. You can't force any animal to breed. Do more research first,

All of them.
spoofbird 11 months ago
@Jamanprince And why do people this. They want to make monay with this animals. For example, a dolphin costs ca. 150.000 dollar and they earn 1mill. dollar with this animal in one year. When they want to protect this animals they can do other things to do that. People who think that the animals are happy in their little goldfisch bowl are naive. Whales who live in captivity can't live in the ocean and this is a indication that this whales are not living like a free whal, as it should be.

@Jamanprince Maybe you should check out the documentary called The Cove it might change your thoughs on seaquariums!!

i'm sorry but watching a girl ride a whale like its a raft is a little boring... I mean, people want to DO that--not watch it... what's the point in watching someone else do what you wanna do? I wouldn't pay to see that...would you pay to SEE me devour a chocolate cake? Or do something really fun? No...why would you??? Yawn.
MeredithOD 1 year ago
@MeredithOD So you dont watch any sports?
LBTennis 1 year ago
@LBTennis None..not at all... but that's beside the point. I do think it's impressive to see the trainers perform acrobatics with the animals....but if you read my original comment... watching her ride the whale like a raft does not qualify as impressive, interesting or entertaining... MOST of this show is pretty lame.
MeredithOD 1 year ago
@MeredithOD You sound like someone that no one wants to hang out with bc all you do is make people feel down. I think riding on a massive killer whale that should be munching on you instead of being your friend is pretty damn impressive.
LBTennis 1 year ago
@LBTennis You sound like an uneducated moron.. killer whales are not known for being aggressive predators, although incidents have happened.
MeredithOD 1 year ago
@MeredithOD Im simply talking about them being predators just like us. They have incredible brains just like us to be able to understand complex ideas such as remembering an entire routine like these. I dont understand how it doesnt amaze you that 2 otherwise completely different species are capable of interacting in these ways. Maybe if justin Bieber was doing a live performance and tweeting about it while on a unicycle and giving ugly girls makeovers all while riding shamu, then you would be

SuperMac18ROX33 1 year ago
for real I mean it is fun to go and see these animals, BUT YOU CAN JUST AS EASILY SEE THEM IN THE WILD! How would you like to live in a cage about as big as your basement? It is a lot cooler seeing them in wild anyway.
