I stand corrected in my last posting. Marilyn Horne DID do the signing for Dorothy Dandridge in Carmen Jones. Adele Addison sang in the film version of Porgy and Bess, also dubbed for Dorothy Dandridge. Both films were directed by Otto Preminger. It's easy to get these things confused.
@ChrisStockslager . I read in an interview with Ms. Horne that she made her singing style sound more like "Hollywood" to fit the film style. She was already building a fine operaticd career, but altered her singing style to fit Carmen Jones.
@elainebmack That's interesting. I read in Donald Bogle's biography on Dorothy Dandridge that Marilyn Horne altered her own singing voice in an attempt to better match Dandridge's speaking voice. I think Horne did a masterful job. I also suspect that it might have been easier for Horne to affect the light soprano she used in this film, as Horne was only 19 years old at the time. The gorgeous mezzo voice for which we know her today was probably still in development.
@MsSparrow23 um no but in this movie her voice was dubbed by an opera singer marily monroe dorthy dandrige and ava gardner were all the bomb shells of that time and they were friends when they were starting out but they never sang eachothers songs
every time she sang that's love...in my head i was singing THAT'S DUMB lol it's still a fun scene to watch :)

I read that Black soprano Adele Addison AND Marilyn Horne dubbed Dorothy Dandridge's singing for this film.

Doesn't sound anything like Marilyn Horne, but I know it is. Very weird... Horne's voice is usually a lot heavier.

Great song from this movie but I believe Dorothy Dandridge is lip synching. Don't remember the real singer.
