This game is overestimated truly. Federer who was governing grass lost. Roger was not the best in this game. He was the beginning of an age decline. And lateness of clear grass. The noisiness of Nadal in a ceremony is proving it. The flag of Spain is shaken. hangs and turns around a coat. runs up on a royal box. etc. It was very good that Novak Djokovic won Nadal this year. Since it proved that Nadal cannot win successively other than clay.
Roger cant be considered the greatest of all time cos he has a negative head-to-head record with his greatest rival (rafa) and he has a modest 5set record (18-16) infact he has chocked many times on a big stage in a 5 set match (safin 05, nalbandian 05, nadal 08, del potro 09, djokovic 10 & 11, tsonga 11). Fed has dominated tennis from 2004 and 2007 like no one has ever done but overall because of those two facts he can only be considered the most successful players of all time, im fed's fan btw
@petitprince1 I agree with some of what you said but most of Fed's 5 set losses come from when he was a kid (before 03). His 5 set record from 04-09 is 10-6, with 3 of those coming from Rafa. The losses to Safin, Nalby, and Nadal were not chokes, his opponents played incredibly. I'll give you that he choked against Novak and Tsonga this year, and his losing record against Nadal but Fed is 30 now and well past his prime. Prime Fed didnt choke. I'm interested in who you think is greater than Fed.
@Garro2 think it all depends on the standard we use to judge who the greatest is. Roger, Sampras, Connors, Laver, Nadal they all have a shot at the 'greatest of all time' label. Roger for Grand Slam wins, Connors for titles, match wins and longevity, Sampras for his Wimbledon record and his serve and forehand, Rafa for his dominance on clay and his versatility and athleticism, Laver for his accomplishments and for what he would have accomplished has he played between 63 and 68.
@ninman58 No he doesnt!!! Federer wouldnt think of anybody like that! He is just dissappointed so I am 2 but losing the mtach doesnt mean to begin insulting your component! Nadal played very well and he deserved it and did you see how he shaked Rogers family's hand that is having respect for each other!!! Nadal may win 100 grand slams but he will NEVER be good or close to the true King Roger Federer!!!! GOAT:Mono 2003 2004 2005 2006 2008 2010(16!!!)
stefan edberg said nadal has the chance to be the greatest player ever and he is fast closing in on federer 16 grand slam record with 10 now and federer himself knows this so he is looking for a way to avoid nadal in a final so he could increase his grandslam tally but nadal looks dominant now, which means he was always be in the final and will always be with the winners trophy and federer with runner up trophy just like old times..............................VAMOS RAFA
you can't fault Federer. to win 5 in a row excuses him from any failure whatsoever! and he played a pretty darn good match. He is the greatest ever - he is the perfect player. And the funny thing is, his sportsmanship and demeanor are the best thing about him.
@SPBTsnyder I love that the Federer fans had your comment flagged as spam. The only fans I know that are more rabid are Lewis Hamilton fans. Roger isn't the GOAT, and I don't think he ever will be now. Just hope someone can get on top of Djoko.
Roger Federer is NOT the greatest player of all-time. There are nine reasons why, 3 of which I can briefly address here.: (1) he does not serve-and-volley or "chip-and-charge" to the net behind return of serve,(2) he has only played against 3 HOF players in his career, whereas Lendl played against 9 HOF players in his career, and McEnroe,Connors,Borg,Becker,Edberg,Sampras,Wilander, and Agassi played against from 6 to 9 HOF players in their careers, (3) Roger only plays against baseline players.
The ITF needs to adopt 2 rules which would vastly improve the game of tennis : (1) Limit the rackets to 75 square inch headsize, no wider than 18 millimeters wide, and no longer than 27 inches long, and (2) abandon the instant replay system in officiating matches where players can challenge a linesman's call. The first rule would bring back finesse and diversity of playing styles into the game and the second is needed because sports were never intended to be played or officiated flawlessly.
The International Tennis Federation needs to put in at least 2 new rules. First, players should not be allowed to wear baggy shorts or sleeveless shirts on the court, and second, players should not be permitted to towel off after every single point UNLESS it is such an unbearably hot and humid day that even the sweatbands and headbands the players wear are unable to keep the sweat from getting on their hands and in their eyes.
No one can legitimately assert that the 2008 Wimbledon Final was the greatest Wimbledon Men's Final of all-time or the greatest match of all-time because most of the greatest matches of the wood era are not on film which, if they were, would allow people to accurately access which match or matches were the greatest of all-time. From the invention of tennis to the early 1960's tennis matches were not filmed in their entirety. We will never know what match was the greatest of all-time.
There is no one worthier of succeeding Federer at the top of men's tennis than Rafa. No one's saying Federer won't return to the pinnacle of men's tennis, but it's unlikely, and he's already had a fantastic, PHENOMENAL run.
For those who attended the match that day, they must have a feeling of privilege for having been witness to the greatest Wimbledon Final of all time. Lucky them.
Federer is an amazing player, no question, but for me, Nadal is just spectacular. The boy does something to me I just can't describe. He stuns me! His passion, the way he moves; how many times have you sat there thinking there is no way he'll get to the ball never mind make a decent enough return and he does and does so meticulously. The fact that he fights for EVERY last point, celebrates every single point! To me, Nadal is the greatest. To me.
@kweencessX clay excluded. successive win 0. If grass and a hard are fast. Like Sampras era. Nadal is able to win only with clay. power of defense and muscles. boring ugly. All the surface is slow now
Nadal. " to watch a Sampras versus Ivanisevic match. or one between those kind of players, is not enjoyable. It's not really tennis. it is a few swings of the racquet. For me in the past it was just serve. serve" arrogant smug
Fake time-out. cheater. gamesmanship. too noisy annoying
wow fed had 13 break points overall and only converted 1, it jst wasnt his day that day, tbh he wasnt at his absoloute best, still a sick match and probably the best match ever and credit to nadal for doing the job but it was so epic the way fed jst wouldnt go down and jst wouldnt lose until the 9-7 in the 5th, from 6-4 6-4 down that was 'the' superhuman effort of the match for me, but ya know shit happens, at least he won his 6th last year : P.
Federer is the greatest player ever but you have to appreciate the effort, mental strength from nadal. This is what makes nadal a true champion as well. Shame about his injuries but don't criticise his playing style, tennis wouln't have been as good without nadal and with a different style this would not have happened. But Nadal is not finished yet. With a bit of re-sceduling and thought throughout the calendar year, the ultimate warrior will be back! Vamos Rafa!!!!
I doubt that his ruined knees will be the same again. The older player is going on, the younger one fall prey to his murderous Tennis. I also doubt that we will see a lot of that matches in future. Nadal is washed-up. I hate to say that!
For me I will wait and see, Nadal played not bad in Aus 2010. It's just that Andy Murray was brilliant (but Andy could not deliver in final) Now he had another injury, I still expect him to win French open, a 70% fit nadal would be enough to win it. But other than that, it looks too tough for Rafa from now on. Wimbledon may be still there for him. But no way he could get any more hard court title.
I will never forget that monster match. The Nadal of 2008/ beginnig 2009 was from another planet. It wasn't a usual run every player has any time in his life! The triple Roland Garros, Wimbledon and olympic gold is steeped in history of tennis. Now that Federer has been confirmed as the greatest ever I can look back on this and appreciate the incredible tennis of a fit Nadal. Wonderful players. Let's hope they both have much more in store for us.
A flickering scoreboard? Are you kidding me Wimbledon? What a huge advantage for Nadal in the final game. Federer tells the chair ump, who then points it out, but nothing is done. Federer is noticeably distracted on the reaching backhand where he mis-hits it. What a shame.
