  • James Woods is always the go-to guy when you need a massive dick in your movie.

  • Our brother and stars sisters are real and they will reveled to humanity in the next monts!!!

  • But she didn't go in the American spaceship, she went

    the other guys spaceship.

  • ...the logistics and technical diagnostics concerning another trip would be astronomical. Next question?

  • i was a little disapointed the whole film i was looking forward to seeing the aliens, and in the end its just a projection of her old man. but I can understand how that ties into the emotional side of the story and jodie foster's character.

  • Too freaky next friday...

  • rip sagan.

  • In the book she DOES bring something back.

  • @catchersmitt0 What? Please tell.

  • This is the movie for eternity. One day in the distant future we will reach the stars, and Carl Sagan's dream will then be fulfilled. Among the best scientific/fictional movies ever!

Movies like this make life worthwhile!

  • @MrVuHNguyen In the distant future if we don't journey amongst the stars then the human race and all life on Earth will die.

  • @crumpetbutterdrips I have tried to think about life on earth in the distant future, talking about AD 10,000 and beyond all the way to AD 1,000,000. Imagine the earth one million years from now. The thoughts send chills down my spine and make me feel sad for my own short life. Yet, at some stage, we must leave earth to take on journeys to other stars to perpetuate our species.

  • 2:21 : she's clearly talking about DMT!

  • @Biopyro clearly!

  • In the courtroom, Matthew reminded me of a young Marlon Brando :)

  • something like this, would never happen in todays world, information like this would be silenced people would be bought out, and only a hand full of extremely wealthy people would use it to there benefit, That is a grim reality of the world we live in today

  • "so if it's just us... seems like an awful waste of space"

    .logic.

  • in buddhism i have seen it says the time travel is possible and have literature on that. first of all you got to develop you mind by deep meditation. e time travel happens when u r in deep state of meditation by using a thing called jhana.

  • @fuckerrights I know that your comment is just a couple of months old but I just wanted to agree with you. I once read a book titled "Third Eye" written by a Buddhist monk named Dr. Lobsang Rampa. It opened my eyes, and changed my very own way of thinking. There's evena part in the book where you mentioned time travel, that he himself experienced.

  • 18 hours. that was so long

  • Does anyone know for sure what exactly happened in this movie? There was no explanation at all. Did she visit Heaven....or what? What or Who was it appearing to be her father? What does the book say?

  • @Quick2000

    > Did she visit Heaven....or what?

    You can hear lines below on this video (6:04 - 6:23);

"The fact that it recorded static isn't what interests me."

"What interests me is that recorded approximately 18 hours."

This line implies that Ellie's experience wasn't a hallucination or something, it's supposed to be real, because she had no chance to alter the record.

So I suppose she must have visited outer space far from the Earth.

  • @runnowhere Thank You for your thoughts on this! I appreciate it big time!

  • @Quick2000

    > What or Who was it appearing to be her father?

Well, I have no idea. Maybe it was Extra-Terrestrial.

I'm afraid that my English is not so accurate, so I wonder if you could tell me any mistakes or grammatical errors on my writings.

  • @runnowhere your writing is perfect and there are no errors here. Thanks for the conversations!

  • Controversial in what way? And should there not be controversy? That's how you get people to think.

  • What do you think? Is she gone to Wega?

  • most of the comments bellow are by

    religious nuts

    conspirisy nuts

    alien believing nuts

  • Hopefully somebody can explain this to me..umm..how can the guy acknowledge the 18 hours of static but knowingly keep that hidden during the trial?

  • @Raktoner because govt wanted to cover up any contact with aliens, just like the x files, they wanted to make her look like a crazy woman

  • @runnowhere

I've just watched the video with Japanese and English SUBTITLES.

Well, I think the story is exciting, but don't you think this ending is a little bit controversial?

I have to improve my English listening skill anyway......

  • pls tell me about this soundtrack at 8:16 please...?

  • God bless Carl Sagan.

    ...Wait.

  • I hate Jodie fucker as an actor. Such an annoying winey bitch

  • @ProConstitutioner

You've proven to be quite a likable and friendly horses ass yourself ;)

  • 18 hours of static....

  • Two things- run the machine again- second, who broke the seat off the roof? Ellie sure as hell didn't do it in the time it took the IPV to fall into the net.

  • Bless Carl!

  • Many scientific methods have REFLECTED as such- Unexplianed forms-scientific, and beyond..There SHOULD be no case for DEBATE.....Humans are ONLY just BEGINING....Arrogance seems to a driving force---Until Humility takes a swift turn.

  • the one remaining and nagging question of this whole film that needs to be asked is why wasn't another person chosen to experience the device? it appears that the second device was NOT damaged during ellie's "trip"? the book also has some unanswered questions.

  • @SocratesTheGadfly the alien said they only take one at a time in a long time. that's how it's always been done.

  • @npaujbais yes, i remember that part vaguely which means i will have to watch the movie and read the book once more. it has been several years since i read the book and i always admired Carl Sagan and strongly feel that God took him away from this world well BEFORE his time but such is the nature of life and death. if there is an afterlife i would like to discuss Carl Sagan's professional work some day. CHEERS! ~S

  • @SocratesTheGadfly I asked this question... I was told the machine had to be operated at *both sides*...both the sending and receiving side. Since the Vegans say Earth getting ready they were operating their side ...too...but once finished it would be like attempting to get on an airplane, but none was at the gate. The machine would attain max speed---but the device would fall through to the water---not having been transported.

  • @Tigerman1138 interesting in that line of thinking and it really is a unique plot saving device that makes the movie open ended as well as leaving nagging questions. did ellie really take the trip or was it all within her mind. the one saving plot line is the camcorder recording 18 hours of static when the pod dropped straight through the rotating rings of the device. as speculative science fiction it still is very well made. still would like to hear cal sagan's thoughts on alien life.

  • @SocratesTheGadfly what second device ? ive only recently read the book only to be disappointed by the movie, but i didn't feel that the book has unanswered questions, what device are you talking about ?

  • @lolroflmaoization from an earlier conversation someone states that for the device to work there had to be 2 with one working at each end and i think that is from the movie I think. it has been several years since I read the book. the device in question is the circular device with rings that spun around and created a "vortex" in the center something like a mini wormhole that "transported" ellie to a tropical planet. the ambiguity I speak of is the endlessness of space

  • @SocratesTheGadfly ive finished the book only yesterday and i still got no idea what you are talking about, the whole traveling part of the story is explained in full detail in the book i suggest you give that part another read

  • @SocratesTheGadfly I don't think those loose ends necessarily need tying up though... I think Carl got the message across, the story is meant to bring home the reality of our situation. In that respect it delivers, this was another way for Mr. Sagan to try and convey his message of the preciousness of humanity and planet Earth.

  • @solomonkain yes, i fully agree with your assessment in that the ending is still open ended just as much as the fate of humanity and life on this good planet earth is also open ended. what science and philosophy have tried to give us is understanding and ultimately acceptance of our own fate. our lives are what we make of it in this vast universe. however, most people are spoiled and want nice tidy endings rather than the doubt of uncertainty and the unknown.

  • @SocratesTheGadfly They ,e.g.,Government Officials know the answer: What they pursue is not to confirm the Truth but to deny it because it exposes their fallacious existence that is predicated on conflict which perpetuates their hold on power for the benefit of a select group- themselves- and not humanity as a whole.

  • @TheBela62 sounds conveniently like the generic conspiratorial theory of everything. just remember to think about this, "the government is NOT lying to you"

  • @SocratesTheGadfly The nagging question to me is the recurring statement that if there isn't life on other planets, it seems like an awful waste of space. The statement itself implies Intelligent Design.

Was that line in the book? Because I can say that as a Christian, I have no problem with that statement, but an Atheist might, and Sagan was, after all, an atheist.

I think its arrogant to believe we are the only ones that God created, the only planet he made habitable.

  • @bantyhenrants yes, I thoroughly agree with you on many of those exact same points. however, I am not so convinced of carl sagan's philosophy as being atheistic. I have no problem with that statement either but the movie does portray religion in something of a negative way with the fanatic who blows himself up to destroy the first device and with matthew mcconaughey's character. further, it would be beyond arrogance and pure hubris to assert that there is only ONE planet for life

  • @SocratesTheGadfly Its nice to know you agree on most points, but I'm pretty sure Sagan was an Atheist. If you have evidence otherwise please let me know.

  • @bantyhenrants I will concede on Carl Sagan but to be honest, I really do not know. I may be biased based upon my background, education and training as an engineer and having broad studies in physics, chemistry and astronomy. Furthermore, I may have to read the book again because if memory serves me well the movie did not quite parallel the book exactly. At this point I will have to say I just do not know.

  • @SocratesTheGadfly I never read the book because I was never a fan of Sagan. I was a Psych major, so I never spent a lot of time thinking about life on other planets. I was too busy thinking about life on this one. Earthlings are so screwed up that I think, if there is life on other planets, I hope they are doing better than we are.

  • @bantyhenrants I will concede that there is a dual dichotomy regarding mankind in which we have the beautiful works of mozart, bernocilli, da vinci, shania twain and chaplin. but within the same breath there is the evil of stalin, jack the ripper, caligula, attila and hitler. my instinct as a scientist though tells me that life on other planets is just as much as struggle for survival just as much it has been for the human race. peace.

  • @bantyhenrants You kind of wonder: Repeating primes is a definite sign of intelligence. But DNA happened simply as a result of causality? The skeptic may believe that, their prerogative. I don't.

  • Does anybody know what chord beeing played from 8:36 to 8:45

  • This is a beautiful movie and one of my favorites, Thank you for uploading.....

  • Carl Sagan was contacted ...

  • @PeaceOfTruth Who was Carl Sagan?

  • @brew667 One of the greatest astronomer ever lived. He brought complicated science to common people and make it understandable. He had a show called Cosmos back in the day where he talks about the human history and the universe and discuss many different issues from biology to chemistry, astronomy, physic etc. He is also the author of the book Contact which this movie based on. He also often talk about how much of a threat that human is to Humanity. You should look him up!

  • @PeaceOfTruth Thanks very much. I will look him up, just looked him up on this and there's some really interesting stuff that i'll enjoy. Thanks again for getting back to me.

  • It's sad SETI has been put under hibernation due to fund shortage, what part should we take?

  • she and james woods really overacted in this... PS, they know for a fact that this came from outer space from alien lifeforms, so why is it so difficult for them to believe she visited there. Seems stupid.

  • @qwertyduel - I agree with this statement, why wouldn't they believe her journey took place after being given plans to make a device that's never been heard of on Earth.

  • @MzShaybutta

I believe it's a comment on the sexism in society. If the guy originally scheduled to go on the trip had made it he probably would've been believed, or given more the benefit of the doubt.

  • Here's the truly goofy part of this film: I can't even put together a tricycle if the instructions are in Spanish. Here we have instructions for the most complex device ever designed, in a language no one on Earth knows. And they get it right??? And it actually works??? Does anyone else see how absurd this is???

  • @boriato Actually the information was transmitted in mathematical equations, i.e. the universal language. Hell even crop circles can be deciphered because they are simply algorithms, mathmatical sequences.

  • @XxBeJeweledDancerxX Good thought. But this is way more complex than a crop circle ...and I'm at a loss how to decipher those. It's instruction to build something no one has ever conceived of before, and no one even knows what it's supposed to do. The idea that anyone could decipher and follow the instructions and get it right (with local materials the space aliens aren't familiar with) still seems pretty comical, don't you think? I did manage to install a thermostat once, but this? Wow!

  • @boriato Then you might want to check out the video called Crop Circles Decoded? by EnigmaUniverse. Enjoy!

  • @boriato That's what cryptotechs and linguists are for.

  • For Scientific funding, half a trillion is a lot of money. Scientists and Engineers are very financially efficient, their knowledge of optimization and mathematical finance(which for them borrows on remedial calculus) coupled with their lack of greed and ability to survive merely on small stipends throughout college and grad school allows them to design projects which are essentially funded on peanuts. The LHC cost 10 billion, the VLA cost 3 billion, the entire space race itself was 136 billion.

  • Man feels small,so he is,in the universe. But man, looking inside, at the hundreds of billions of cells in his body,he now is a GIANT...........BUT,if man sees that ALL of the atoms that make him up,are little parts of the universe, then he can see that HE is the universe,in part of it,.......he is it. Just as the Sun,Mars or Vega, are part of it.They are it. We,Humans,ARE the universe, more powerful then Stars, because we can think, and have minds. Our mind, spirit, energy, with it is god to some.

  • @billy1212ist can you please share what you were smoking ?

  • @donniedarko131 While certain natural drugs help deepen your thoughts, how ever shallow and unevolved they begin, i don't think it takes drugs for an intelligent and imaginative person to realize that his conciousness is conected to everything large & small inthe universe. Our cells are living functioning purposeful beings in the universe that is us. We are specs of purposeful beings in the vastness of space and multiple dimensions. If you cannot contemplate that then you need a fat ass joint.

  • @XxBeJeweledDancerxX You are nuts, all you are spitting is aristocratic non sense, I've read your wall of text in your channel, Imo you have some burned up fuses, you sound like an extremist idiot... My conciousness is connected to nothing, we are just advanced machines. Don't watch too much Sci-fi... And definitively drop what you are smoking. And btw you can stick the "natural" word to drugs to make it sounds cool, but you know some natural chemicals actually kills...

  • @donniedarko131 I think it's cute someone as disconnected and bitter as you are would even attempt to tell someone what to do over the computer. But nonetheless an acurate expression of your stunted psycological evolution. BTW there's no mention of aristocracy in my comment and I know of no aristocrat with the mind much less the soul to explore the concept of infinite conciousness. Finally for someone watching a science fiction film telling others not to you are also a retarded hypocrite.

  • @XxBeJeweledDancerxX Can you ever fucking stop talking like you are writing a fucking thesis ? If that's what turns you on, then don't talk with some random people on the internet. And go connect yourself with whoever in the other side of the universe since you are connected...

  • @donniedarko131 Furthermore I don't meet many people as insanely introverted as you these days. You're like a relic from the dark ages where free thought is considered heresy. Don't for a second think your drooling ramblings have helped anyone understand this film, science, fiction, or my online persona any better. Just eat your MSG drink your fluoride & be a good little machine. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. I bet that's how you greet people everyday if u even leave the house.

  • @XxBeJeweledDancerxX And btw don't try to make it sounds like you are the good guy, you are not, you are the hater here, you picked me randomly and started saying shit to me, don't expect me not to come back at you then. You are the hater get over it, if you were not you wouldn't have started shit with me... I have not asked you anything. Go back writing your fucking thesis imo...

  • @donniedarko131 Just as you randomly picked someone to criticize. And I wasn't "hating". Merely pointing out that your programming is outdated and faulty IMO. I'll leave you alone now if you stay gone.

  • Mr.Kitz, wanna punch him out?YUP,thats really good acting.James Woods,as seen in person,is a shy very humble gentle man.He can play a good,... RAT.I'm sure that Dr.Carl Sagan, when he wrote this book, did the proper research,on worm hole,VEGA,light speed, and the time a body would fall that distance.Humans making all of these comments, most of whom are unaware of their,ID and EGO,and how they work,The Mind, not the Brain. With a "Star Trek",education of space, yet they seen so 'right'.or so they think

  • I like the part where they get Occam's Razor wrong.

  • jodie foster, shit actor!

  • The guy on the far left at 4:50 kinda looks like Carl Sagan.

  • I always forget how awesome this movie is

  • sad that the top comments are smart-ass remarks rather than an intelligent analysis of how beautiful the theme of this movie is.

  • I hated Matthew McConaughey in this movie. I don't know why.. He totally irritated me..

  • Why did she not just say "well if you do not believe me send someone else to confirm what I say."

  • @MrFrontallobotomy the Machine stops working after she takes her trip.

  • @wellgeewhizz Oh I see. What a wasteful civilisation! You would expect a few goes for your money! So now mankind has to fork out even more money to build another one. I'd send a message back saying "Stuff your machine pal, it's crap! Even the space shuttle that looks like a school bus with wings is reuseable"

  • "18 hours of static! interesting isnt it?" love it...!

  • @userac78

Chilled my blood when I saw this the first time. One of the best movie WHOA moments I can remember!

  • I'm a scientist and all the time i watch this movie, it makes me cry like a baby, call me nerd.

  • Just great: here is a female scientist who needs to be saved by a "religious" witch doctor from the clutches of devious politicians! so who wins? the witch doctor of course. religion: the greatest calamity that befell mankind

  • like always the goverment covers everything

  • @Cottbus2 That's because we all have small minds loaded with hysteria!

  • There is no other girl in Hollywood who would have done a better job as Ellie as Jodie did. Noone.

  • I'd like to say this is a good movie but goddammit isn't that Matthew McConaughey in it!

  • EVERYTHING'S COVERED-UP!

  • i think it was this movie that inspired some guys to start making south park. 1997 both of them and first episode was about exactly this stuff o,O maybe you've all seen that already...

  • For Carl

  • @LBTennis What a wonderfull gift to Carl from Ann Druyan.

  • This film is amazing and Inspiring in a way. Just shows us that life is more than we know or handle and gives us many more views on our faith.

  • The best sci-fi movie so far...

  • my dad was an extra in the first scene

  • I don't know-- but the Occam's Razor argument in this segment seems faulty to me. It seems MORE likely/simple that a FAR more intelligent species was able to contact us than some lowly human could have conned everyone so well. The argument seems extremely flawed and ridiculous.

  • If this were real life why do I get the feeling that the nutty protesters in this movie in hysteria and mob mentality, would probably be holding FOX NEWS signs.

  • Love the acting. Very well done.

  • So powerful!!! I just saw this for the first time at my church today...I was crying my eyes out. I know exactly how she feels. Just because you don't have imperical evidence about something doesn't mean it isn't real.

  • This film changed my life

  • @matteuklol,

Me too. This is one of my favorite movies.

  • This is one of my Favorites as well, and best last scenes ever. For me, that is. I know, "Cheesy"!

  • 6:15 love that part!

  • I think it's great that the alien turns out to be Hack, the cab driver!!

  • She is so overdramatic.

  • Two wars in the Middle East, giant additions to bureaucracy (FEMA/Homeland security), and bailout of major failing corporations...we could've built a hundred of these things...

  • In the screenplay, Ellie is vindicated to the entire world when the 'transport system' reveals itself in the night sky. It'd be nice to see a filmed version of that, even if it wound up as a deleted scene in the dvd extras.

  • Jodie Foster is like Jesus in that courtroom.

  • @Morelloo1 yeah, everyone against her

  • @Morelloo1

It would be freking awesome if extra terrestrial aliens were responsible for Jesus and actually gave him powers/teachings/etc

  • Isn't James Woods annoying? And a semi-shitty actor to boot

  • @UberKrispy woods is one of the best actors in hollywood.

  • @porkbellyroast How so? he always plays the same smart-ass, arrogant annoying asshole. In essense, he plays himself.

  • @UberKrispy yeah well he is good at that.

  • @UberKrispy

fuck you brian. just because he ruined your screenplay and TV show doesnt mean you need to hate him forever

  • One GRAIN of the SAND--I'll accept it.. W ith a taerdrop....

  • James Woods

  • We can " travel " to the "Moon " and call it a HOAX..OCKAM'S RAZOR

  • FUN FACT: my cousin is the girl jodie foster puts that hat on at 7:26

  • Comment removed

  • WE ALL CAN TRAVEL IN LUCID DREAMING--So how is this EXPERIENCE any different than HUMAN ABILITY ??????

  • @MATUSOWNED No different.Humans use one-tenth of their brains. So think of OUR lucid dreaming,as Grade one.Imagine when a human can use ten-tenths of the brain. The 'dreaming' or mind travel, will be what we can not even imagine now.Energy,Mental Energy, wanna take a ride???????

  • so where r the audio recordings? she spoke into a microphone the whole time where is the audio? they never mentioned it. don't sspose it's all static too.

  • Comment removed

  • @SolidGold1980 - Good point. My knowledge of Special Relativity is limited, but I think you are right.

  • @SolidGold1980 The theory of going at the speed of light... actually makes things real weird. Possibly even going back in time... or taking longer than it used to be calculated..

im not sure though, i really forgot.

  • @SolidGold1980 No no my friend, obviously she traveled much farther than she could have done with the speed of light in 18 hours. She saw a galaxy from the outside! Even if it was our Milky Way we saw there: Even light would have traveled 10s of 1000s of years to reach that point in space! So obviously, she traveled much faster than light. But that's the whole idea behind wormholes, isn't it?

I think, special relativity brings you no step further here. It's science fiction! :-)

  • @djungbremen Dang, you're right - even getting to Vega would take years traveling at light speed. So I guess we can assume the wormholes let her take shortcuts thru the universe and allowed her to come back at almost the same instant she left regardless of what speed she traveled.

  • @djungbremen maybe it was another dimension

  • @SolidGold1980 Your observation is correct. One of the best sci-fi movies for 60 minutes and then one of the worst disappointments 60 minutes onward...arg! This is the SETI Directors favourite sci-fi movie up to the point where Jodi is bouncing around the beach with her father because some rich guy was able to hide a major complex from the 1,000s of military and domestic satellites.... why, why why

  • carl is my dad

  • Another great movie from the 90s era. And the piano playing really makes me want to watch Forrest Gump now

  • FOR CARL *WTF*

  • @venomxus Carl Sagan wrote the novel.

  • @julien1976julien i nearly cried when it said "for carl" its almost like Jody Foster actually played carl for filling his dream of travelling to the stars before he died, sham he never did make it. We love respect and inspire from you Carl Sagan see you in Vaga someday

  • 'I'll tell you one thing about the universe, though. The universe is a pretty big place. It's bigger than anything anyone has ever dreamed of before. So if it's just us... seems like an awful waste of space. Right?' - BEST QUOTE!

  • the fact that it recorded static isn't what interests me, what interests me is that it recorded 18 hours of it

  • what is it with 18?? 18 hours, 18 months later!

  • damn recorded 18 hour means she DO traveled 18 hours on space and that so fast that she came back at same time into the gyroscope :)

  • Probably the two smartest actors in Hollywood in one scene. Jodie graduated magna cum laude with a degree in literature from Yale and is fluent in french. while James has an IQ of 180 and 1580 sat score.

  • this makes me cry every time. i know if this was to happen in real life, i would believe her.

  • Comment removed

  • congress is so much more reasonable in the movies

  • Congress is so much more reasonable in the movies

  • what about the bit at the end where the woman say that the doctors head cam recorded 18hrs of static which means it did happen? or is that just a special scene for the special edition?

  • @gearsofwarowner99 that was in the movie. I remember that vividly when i watched in the theatre. One of my favourite movies!

  • @gearsofwarowner99 in all I knew, that ever-important scene was not exclusive to a special edition. It was part of the original Contact movie with Jodie foster.

  • Hypocrites! All of them believe in God and they can't prove it. xD

  • @sixra90 Gosh dangit GOD DOES EXIST!!! You want proof of god!!! Look at Nascar! WOuld as beautiful a thing as Nascar or Cousin on Cousin marriage exist without THE LORD!!!! I don't think so! I'm from Alabama!!! If there is no God then I must be some sort of monkey! And I ain't no MONKEY!!!! gOSH DANGAAAAAT

  • @365to173repubsPWNED So true I should subscribe to you but I'm to lazy to.

  • @NikiBoy27 Yeah I used to be an Atheist and used to think rationally and only believe things with evidence backing them up.....but then I found Nascar and Incest and missing teeth, and I just came to the conclusion that God has to exist. Who needs evidence to believe in things? I believe I can have sex with my sister!!! And there's no evidence for that!!! Duhhhhh

  • That was one of the movies that stayed with me for so long. Gave me a lot to think about and a new perspective. I loved watching it. Just a great movie.

  • I once had a conversation with a man who asked me if I believed that there was life in outer space. I said no I don't believe it I know it to be a fact. How do you know he asked. I said simply this. Where do you suppose we are ?

  • @josephonwhidbey There it is, good comment.

  • This movie is great because it treats faith and science eloquently... I love the 18+ hours of static: it could only mean that she actually went somewhere very quickly: it's called Time Dilation and it's very real. But forcing an atheist to demand others having faith in her testimony was a great evolution of her character... I'll probably buy this movie for that reason alone.

  • for carl, rip
