    Pete

  • ilapsteel is an amazing new site that I found that has Some chords and scale fretboard maps in ebook form. check it out. I emailed the site and was they will come out with entire collections for all the various tunings in clear fretboard maps. You can even submit ideas via email for your own customize tuning fretboard map.

  • Beautiful. You should be in the States.

  • Amazing!!! Beautiful !!!! I'm new @ Lap-love this vid! Thank you!!

  • Thanks pino, Ive been playing slide for a while and was keen to learn lap steel; your tutorial helped me out lots thanks

  • Truly very good!! You have a great sense of timing and you don't overdo it... Congrats!!

  • lovely sound. Is all the swell created with the volume knob or are you using a pedal?

  • @CC6842 Thanks! It´s all volume knob.

  • That was really fantastic!

  • Thanks for posting - we just played together (you and me) for about 15 Minutes (I backed u up on a 8 sting Gibson consolette, C6 tuning) Very nice tune and playing

  • Wonder how the likes of you and Ronnie Wood got so good at this type of playing?

  • Very cool. Thanks very much for posting. Learned a lot in 2 minutes!

  • Hey great video!

I'm just learning how to play lap steel and could you send me a tab of this video?

Doesn't need to be acurate just something i gan get started?

  • Hi - when I tune my (8 string) lap steel to EBEG#BG#BE - the strings feel too tight and often snap. Hope you don't mind me asking but what am I doing wrong? R.

  • Hi, what string gauges do you use? I think I currently have something like 015-058 for the open E tuning. I´m not really familiar with the 8-string...

Your G#BG#B, are they the same notes doubled, or?

    Later

    Martin

  • @treborif did u ever get an answer to your question? i too am looking as i just started to play one- an 8 that is

  • This is great!

  • lap steel playing is really fun, your technique is much better than mine i tend to just cheat and use a volume pedal and a normal guitar pick, your technique sounded really great thats certainly something to aspire to

  • right on, i appreciate them tips on the muting.

  • I like this style of playing.... thanks

  • Beautiful. Very cheery and happy.

    Ed

  • thanks for your demonstration !! i like so much your presentation video ^^

    keepin' slide music =p

  • Hi Mertin - well, I'm sitting here just outside Bristol, TN and your video has decided me that Monday before I fly back to CA I'm going into Moorstown and buy me a Morrell 6-string lap steel guitar. I've been playing guitar for a LONG time but I'm as excited as a teenager about learning lap steel - thanks for the inspiration.

    Luke

  • Hello, beautifully done, what tuning do you find yourself playing in or using the most, on the lap steel,

    Thank's

    "Jeff in Cleveland"

  • Hi Jeff, thank you!

Since I mostly play guitar I haven´t been trying so many other tunings than open E. I do cheat on some squareneck dobro where I tend to use GBDGBD or open D.

Do you have any favorite tunings (if you play)?

    Cheers

    Martin

  • some great tips what tuning do you use

    5*****

  • Hi, thanks!

It´s an open E-tuning, from low to high:

    EBEG#BE

    like E major on guitar.

  • Very helpful thanks. I have always wanted to play acoustic lap guitar in the style of Kelly Joe Phelps and would be fine with the picking hand but expect that the steel bar hand will take some work to manage well. I assume that the basic techniques are generally similar to the amplified instrument that you use?

  • Sorry, missed your question!

Yes, except for the volume swells, the techniques are the much the same. I do some cheating on squareneck "dobro" (take that, Gibson! :) although then I use a Scheerhorn steel bar with more sharply angled edges to allow for easier/ faster single-string pull-offs/ hammer-ons.

  • Nydelig, Martin! Aldeles nydelig!!

    Rune

  • Beautiful!. What Lap Steel did you use ?

  • Thanks, it´s a Supertone. I believe it´s from the late 1930´s or so. It has an updated output jack and two non-original knobs for tone and volume. I have ordered a new set of (vintage-looking) tuners because the old ones are mostly stuck!

  • You make it look so easy...Any tip about tuning..?

Thanks for your time... and your music, of course...!

  • Sorry, I just saw the advertising at the beginning ...

  • :) No problem

  • Thanks for taking the time to post your tips it is appreciated by learners. Mick

  • Beautiful. Without a doubt the best lap steel video on youtube. Did I say beautiful? Classy, 5 Stars, Superb! Dave

  • Thank you Dave, glad you enjoyed it.

Many people unfortunately see lap steel as just a beginner´s pedal steel - but it sure has a voice of its own!

    Regards

    Martin

  • Hej Martin,

Great class! I felt like a student again! Great idea! I will do this for a video how to make scrambled eggs! :-) I'm an expert!

And 5 stars for the music!

    Per-Olov

  • Hej Per-Olov!

Thank you, you´ve been a good student, A+

    :)

I´m looking forward to descrambling the code for making scrambled eggs...lol

    Cheers

    Martin

  • Wow how many instruments do you actually play? :)

This is such a relaxing melodious piece. Thanks for showing this!

    -Stanley

  • Hi Stanley, thanks again!

I´ve "dabbled" with different stringed instruments... worked in studios a bit and there it´s an ace up the sleeve to be able to throw in some other stuff than guitar.

However, I´m not sure it´s always a good idea, can be a bit confusing :)

Nowadays I try to stick "mostly" to the ac. guitar

    Cheers

    Martin

  • it is really a great harmonic instrument, sounds fantastic

  • hi Guo, yes it´s a sweet instrument, not too far from some far east sounds..?

  • far east sounds, did you mean traditional music of far east? i don't associate it with fast east sounds yet~ because it may be a little bit of electric-sound,but it would be great in the new classical style ;) sounds really really great, i like this work~

  • i like it and want to play all beautiful songs~;D

  • wooooooooow. awesome. great man. have a nice day. cheers chris

  • Thank You Martin.

    Pascal

  • Thank you for watching Pascal, hope everything´s fine!

    Martin

  • The memories are flooding my mind

I use to play with a guy in a band years ago who made and played a lap steel like no tomorrow didn't know how much I loved hearing one until today

    Thanks for the flashback

    Paul

  • Hi Paul, glad I could bring back some memories!

    Cheers

    Martin

  • You're amazing !

  • Bra som alltid .. härlig feeling =)

  • Really great demonstration, Martin.

I like the lap steel sound very much but never tried to play. Maybe I have to think about it using for our duo. Thanks for that vid and have a nice day,

    Bernd.

  • Hallo Bernd, thanks!

It could be a great complement in the duo setup. I sometimes play lap steel in a trio with acoustic guitar and piano (and vocals), and it´s a sweet sound for pop/ country/ blues/ rock, works anywhere!

    All the best

    Martin

  • That little bit adds a lot! Thanks for showing that

  • i have a home made lap steel with a telecaster pickup i would know what kind of string you put on yours. cheers André

  • Hi André!

For open E tuning I use:

    058 (or 056) 038 030 024p 019 015

It´s always a good idea to use heavy strings for better control and response.

Search google for "pedal steel string gauges" and you can find guides with gauges for any tuning.

    Cheers

    Martin

  • thank you Martin. Hear you soon ! André

  • Thank you Frank! I´ve always liked the sound of slide/ steel and I think more people should play it!

    Cheers

    Martin
