This is a very good, atmospherically strange movie, outlandish as sci-fi should be. It is one of my favourites. I never tire of it.

I believe that with the reference to discs and the letter 'O' in the TRON logo, they were subtly introducing us to the production of Compact Discs and then Digital Versatile Discs, before they were marketed. Obviously, one would scoop as much from sales of vinyl and cassette tapes and Beta/VHS first, wouldn't they? While waiting for the right time to mass-produce to mass public reception, they would advertise with the 'disc' symbolism and the digitized orange sequence.

@CBEPHI Because Star Wars used spaceship models and was painting the laser blasts directly on the film material - Tron used actual CGI. Nobody did that before.

@EZbakeROFLcakes yep they made the TRON: Legacy suits self illuminating so they wouldn't have to do that effect in post like the original TRON had to. That was all painted by hand those glowing effects in the original.
