  • This was when chevys didn't suck

  • Best pickup in the world, no doubt.

  • did you need any adaptor to bolt the muncie trans upto the detroit?

  • @TheTractorJake no the bell housing was made for a 353 and a SM420. This was used in Chevy step vans sold in the USA and Studebaker trucks in the 60's You could get a factory Detroit diesel 353 in Chevy vans and also in Chevy pickup trucks in the 1960's . Studebaker also offered the 353 in its 1 ton flat bed trucks. I seen two Chevy 3/4 ton pick up trucks around year 1966 with a factory 353 Detroit both was over sea's . Both was ex US military trucks.

  • @MotelCambodia do you have any clue if theres any factory 453's that you can bolt either an sm420 or an sm465 up to? im not very smart with the detroits, but im a real big chevy fan, and in that aspect i really know what im doing, and i want to swap in a 453 into a 64 stepside 4x4. any advice?

  • @TheTractorJake yes a 453 has the same bell housing as 353 . 453 was a factory option for the 1.5 ton chevy trucks. i dont know what trans they used.

  • all ok

  • all sweet how did u fit the Detroit in that truck that was awesome

  • @bluejay148 it was a bolt in Chevy offered this diesel in its vans in the 60's

  • hey man. just wondering. the stock 4x4 tranny fits right onto the engine? any mods? what tranny exactly is it.. real nice truck ive always been stoked by them obnoxious loud jake brakes.

  • Very nice truck, how'd you hook the detroit up to the transmission?

  • @wildbill0088 probably an adapter plate

  • where did you get the jake brake

  • @flippedmysled e bay

  • where did you get the jake brake

  • 0:05-0:09 that is the sound of the jake brake. it sounds great!

  • Out of a gamma goat or is she iron?

  • @AmoralEngineer Some goat. Most factory stuff from the 60's. The gamma goat used the factory Chevy stuff for the 353 chevy put in it vans .

  • whats gas mileage like?? lol

  • um..eeyeah, thats not the sound of the Jacobs Engine Retarder

  • @Corey497 sounds just like the other videos of 353 or 453 with jakes here on youtube!! . what you think the sound was added to the video?

  • @motel cambodia That is a beautiful sounding truck. I am curious as to how you got the engine and tranny mounts...thanks.

  • i need jakes for my 3-53 can you help ?

  • is that the can am outlander max 800 in the back?

  • how many miles to the gallong do these detriot diesels get

  • Way 'fucking' cool!

  • way cool

  • that is so sweet!!!

  • Thats AWESOME to hear a pickup with a jake

-Even if its a 3 cylinder!

  • SWEEEEET Truck.... I have a 65 Chevy C20....Doesn't have one of those motors in it but a GM Goodwrench 350 Crate. I love the growl of these DD two stroke diesels... NOTHING like it.... If my 350 ever dies I am gonna look for a 353 or 453...My truck is unique being that it is the only 65 around my town that is painted double canary yellow and has sparkling chrome on the grill, bumpers and Custom badges on the cab...But a DD2stroke??WOW.

  • that is not a Jake brake on that brake all he is doing is shifting down

  • THAT is the jake brakes never down shifted until the parking lot

  • is it a 2.6L?

  • that is so sick! i want one!

  • That truck is badass!!!

  • that sound is amazing! great truck

  • All my dreams are resumed in your trucks!!!

    Congratulations

I was wondering... where do you get this piece of sweet?

  • I would like to see pics of the engine on this truck.

  • Look at my other videos there is some,, also I sold this truck I hope the new owner will keep posting videos of what he done to it

  • Sweet truck bro.. I have a 65 Chevy C20...It doesn't have a Detroit. It has a Gm 350 Crate engine...Love what you have done with your truck...These old trucks were built to last...and by God they sure do.

  • Thats a really nice truck.

  • wow dream truck

thats the coolest truck i've ever seen

  • Do the jakes do a decent job holding back? You running muffler or resonator?

    Looks real good !!!

  • A combination of mileage, power, and the meanest sound to ever hit the roads!!!

  • thanks for all the good comments

  • is that the factory engine?

  • no in Chevy's sold here in pu trucks Chevy used 353 in step vans.

But on my factory data plate in the cab it lists this motor with all the other motors available .

I saw one in Vietnam with a Detroit late 60s Chevy 4x4 looked x military

  • ah, that a really cool truck though and i usually don't like chevy's.

  • Cool truck.

  • thanks

  • SWEET!

  • thanks

  • Know anyone selling a truck like yours.

  • was a 2 whell drive like it on e bay some time ago keep looking maybe it will come back on there

  • Cheers.

  • thanks

  • Detriot and chevy Nice!

  • Sounds AWESOME!

  • sweet....

  • what was neccasacery to do this and you think it would be the same in my 68 k20

  • Im not sure, Depends of the motor you try to fit in . This motor has side mounts and the rear fit the origanal crossmember.

If you find a truck motor it should be easy.

  • oregon??

  • Idaho

  • but the truck has an oregon plate

  • Coolest chev i've ever seen this truck is awesome a1

  • Where did you find the motor?

  • Internet some truck salvage that had low hour military motors I dont remember the name

  • both will fit this 353 is the High HP military version and is 100'sof pounds lighter . Has the same power as the gas motor it replaced. but gets 30mpg. And got a good deal on it.

  • Will a detroit like that fit any regular Gm 4 speed?

  • Depends on the bell housing. There is several made that fit different trans. This motor bell housing fits the SM420 the stock trans for this truck

  • that wouldnt have a jake?

  • ?? why not?

  • nvm its awsome!

  • coolest truck ever

  • sweet truck

  • thanks

  • thanks

  • Hell. Yeah.

  • cool!

  • hell yea i want one to drop my kids of at school with

  • Wow! I love DD but thought a 3-banger would sound really gay in a truck. That really sounds like the real deal!

  • damn that sounds peerrrty. lol

  • Very Cool, Great sound. You need more gear though the 353 loves to wind faster..

  • is that a 3-53t whats the stock hp on that lil thing

  • Sounds just like a 6V-53.

  • my turbo will not fit ,to many adapters needed, but if you call leid diesel service talk to Harold he has all you need to hook up a turbo, used equipt, good price, can,t get the video to up load717-776-7725-fax 717 -776-4127

  • I got a camera took a video, had to put on disk but can,t send, how do you send

  • try up loading it on youtube? You need to save it as movie file on your computer then you can send it as email or up load it on youTube

  • HA!!!!! LOVE IT

  • I have a 8.3 detroit turbo V8 id like to repower something with. Its just to big though.

  • lol the 353 detroit motor is create for timberjack 230!!!

there are so find the right engine that have incorporated the large truck and pick-up but it is not very éficace cause of his regime very low at 800rpm to 1800rpm and to force 2200rmp

  • GREAT TRUCK!!!

What was the original engine in that truck? How much did you have to adapt to get that Detroit engine in? Bell housing? Motor mounts?

  • a screamin'-ass Detroit in an old Chevy pickemup. Never thought of combining the 2, but now that I see it, makes one wonder why GM didn't offer them as an option back then.

  • Ford did. But the catch was that you had to have either a Grumman or Boyertown step-van body with it. Wonder Bread had many of both back in the '70's.

  • chevy did also have step vans with 353 in them. Sutudabaker 1 ton trucks had them also

  • sweet, nice idea, i like the jake brake sound it makes. mean very mean

  • Thanks. I'm still working on finishing the body work.

I still looking for the aluminum jake valve cover. The valve cover spacer I was using leaks oil.

  • where did you get the jake brake for it?

  • off a 6v53. They are not installed for most of my videos. I took them back off until I can rebuild them. And I need to find a jake valve cover I made a temporary spacer but it leaked to much oil.

  • Well, I own a machine shop. I would be more than happy to help you out! Let me know.

  • holy shit i want that truck!

  • why is it needed to rev so high?

  • Its a 2 cycle it max rpm is 2300.

comming the road was about 1800 rpm.

  • "its a 2 cycle it max rpm is 2300.

comming the road was about 1800 rpm." I thought the 353 + the 453 can turn about 2800rpms?

  • is that near Hellgate? sweet detroit

  • North Idaho ,near Silver wood amusement park

    Off hwy 95

  • hey your from oregon that cool and that truck nice

  • that is badass!

  • This truck has Oregon licence plates, as I can tell.

  • It's like a scene out of Deliverance! Cool mod though!

  • damn nice

  • long way from campuchea

  • Kampuchea is, of course, Cambodia.

  • where is this taken

  • The Bonco RD Snow mobile staging parking area . About 15 miles North of Coeur D' Alene Idaho ,off Hwy 95

  • i can't get enough of this truck. i want to do something similar to an older gmc or chev truck, either a 3-53 or 4-53 would be just fine. but i would like to know does the standard transmission bellhousing for chev V8's bolt up to these detroit motors? i keep hearing i need to make an adapter but you said it bolted right up the the SM420...?

  • needs a jake brake

  • A Jake Brake, although it would sound awesome, would probably stand a truck that light on its front wheels.

  • I HAS got a jake, listen at 5 second mark

  • do you have any under hood pictures,I have just put a 453 in a 79chevy one ton,I would like to see your fuel filters, linkage etc,I have eliminated the vacume pump, fan ,and I an putting the radiator in a rear spoiler try to get rid of as much weight as possible

  • I don't know much about Diesels, except working on my old 6.9 International in an 85 F250. How does this motor stack up against a Cummins 4BT power wise?

  • that sounds good! i found a detroit in a older chevy that im going to pull and put in my m715

  • Is that the stock tranny? Did it bolt up or did you use adapters or what? I have a 77 f-250 and would love to put a detroit in it. They just have a wonderfully unique sound, and besides, everyone is using cummins thesedays and I want something different.

  • bolted up to the stock SM 420 4 speed. Using most the stock linkage for clutch and acclerator. 3:73 gears 16" wheels ,tires?

Will run all day at 70 mph.

  • 0:11-00:13 Sounds like the tranny's hurting a little...sweet sound though. Hearing an old school 2-stoke might be better than sex.

  • ??? Tranny is just fine! All you hear is motor and blower.

  • is that jakes on that? we rebuild the old detroits at my work and ive never seen jakes on one.

  • Its 1/2 of a 6v53 so jakes work but not too much ever put em on!!

  • Is it a 353 cu inch, often detroit use example 6v91, six 91 cu inch cylinders. Is urs a 2 stroke?

Whats the designation etc? is it a 6 v?? do tell!

Love olive grreen old pickups, no fukin shitty electronic shite that breaks every year!!

  • 3-53 its an inline. 3 cylinders 53 cubic inches each.

  • Only 159 cu inch in total for that big thing?

Sound wrong to me, to small.

  • Check this out: The volunteer fire company I used to belong to had an old Seagrave pump that originally had a 906 cubic inch V-12 gasoline engine rated at 305 HP. Around 1983 we dropped a 6V-53T in it, which is 318 cubic inches and 225 HP. The truck, @ 13 tons fully loaded, still went from 0-35 MPH in less than 15 seconds with the 6V-53T.

  • American fire engines; I heard of one that had a Napier deltic engine-18 cylinders, 3 crankshafts, 2 stroke, 1650bhp! it must have been huge!

  • You're thinking of the FDNY "Super Pumper." This unit, along with the accompanying "Super Tender" were pulled by Mack tilt-cab tractors with 672 cubic inch "Maxidyne" diesel engines with Allison 6-speed automatic transmissions. The Super Pumper had the Napier-Deltic diesel engine in it's trailer for pumping. The Super Tender carried the Super Pumper's hose and had a giant deluge gun over it's tractor which could deliver 10,000 GPM.

  • It fires on every stroke so to compair it to a 4 stroke it would be 318 cu inch.

It does just fine and puts out more power then the civilian 453 . Its high HP military version of the 353. And it 1/2 the size of the semi truck 653 that pulled 80000# on some smaller 18 wheelers. So it will do me just fine.

  • Did u have to change any gear ratios, the diesel will rev not that high compared to petrol? or does it?

    I put a 6.2 in a land rover,it revs 1000rpm less than petrol (gas!).

What power and torque is that thing?

Sounds lovely. Modern ones use just a turbo, this means less wasted power turning the blower- could u do that?

  • It doesn't have to rev very high if it's got power at it's operating speeds.

I drove a '98 cummins dodge ram that outpulls an '02 duramax, yet redlines 700rpm lower.

  • I mean so u can get the same top speed.

My car had a top speed of 80 at 4000rpm.

the newun revs to 3000 so now my top speed is 60 unless I put taller gearing on. see what I mean?

or did the previous engine have a similar rev range?

  • On the 2-stroke Detroits, a turbo can be used, but the supercharger is retained for adequate scavenging air for starting/idling.

  • Actually on some just a turbo is used, the air in the cylinders is just enough to compress and ignite the diesel, spinning the turbo. Examples of this are General motors locomotive engines and napier deltic Turbo diesels. The superchargers were used at first with a turbo but eventually can limit efficiency- a turbo just uses otherwise wasted exhaust energy- see deltic preservation society-baby deltic engine- some examples of turbo only 2 strokes r there.

  • Comment removed

  • I believe the emd only mechanically drives turbo when starting?

the usual deltics used mechanical blowers sometimes with turbos, but the 9 cylinder baby deltic used and exhaust driven turbo that was mechanically driven during start up; I know this because I spoke with the owner of one of the last baby deltic 9 cylinder engines a while back, which reminds me I was going to send off for a book on that engine from them.

  • The turbo on an EMD does not spool till notch 7 (out of the 8 throttle positions).

  • are u 100% sure?

  • In fact, thats only about 2.8 litres.

  • thats the size though. certain tractors were equipped with that motor. it maybe a small displacement motor but it has alot of torque.

  • I hope not, sounds a bit pointless.

Get better mpg power and torque from a 6.2gmc, wider power band, less weight higher revving etc.

  • In fact this particular engine, the 3-53, was used in Wonder Bread step-vans during the 1970's.

  • the owner reports that this outperforms the original gas motor. what kind of gassers can the gm 6.2 best in a pickup? the truck gets 28mpg and i wouldn't be surprised if the 6.2 isn't as reliable as the 3-53.

  • Actually, around 2.6-2.7L.

  • Correction, it's really 2.6L.

  • jake brake time

  • Cool man!!! I love the sound ! Putting Diesel engines

in old trucks is my kinda hobbie

  • it has coil ,it is two wheel dr,I think I have the room,I will not be putting the radiator in the grill that will save weight also I am going to put in new stude in front hubs ,same as rear so ,I can have dualls front and rear, trying for 35x12.5x16.5,cant' find a high rear end only 4.10,unless i can find a dodge 3.55I am worrie4d about the coils, but I found a 353 on ebay in a 73 half ton,he put on double shocks and it worked ok,front of my one ton is rated at 3800-----

  • Hey dude, that is a nice truck and motor. I have a 1964 Chevy suburban with a 4-53T in it and I love it. I am doing an out of frame overhaul now to install cross head pistons. When I get it running I will do a video of it and post. Keep on trucking!

  • did you have to do anything special to the steering or suspension,I would like to see more of your truck,I am getting ready to put 453 in a 1 ton chevy

  • Is your truck a 4x4 with leaf springs in front or coil? A 1 ton should be okay to install a 4-53 if it has leaf springs. Not sure about the coil springs. My suburban was a 1/2 ton 4x4 with leaf springs in front and I had to add 2 leafs to each side. Steering is manual and it is hard to turn the wheel at slow speed. Would like to get power steering for it. It is a blast to drive. Now am doing an out of frame rebuild for cross head pistons. If you need help, I will try to advise.

  • Rev & Drop - Sorry - Trial & Error

It's best to start by progressively shifting. Go to bottom of range established

above. Use 200 drop to shift. Then go to 100 rpm's above bottom of range and

use 300 drop to find smooth upshift drop.

Rev: use 100 rpm more than established drop to start.

  • A nice 5" chrome stack would look fabulous on that sucker.

  • Do you have a photo album on the net anywhere of your truck?

  • Its soo sad you don't hear that sound on the roads no more.I remember hearing a good old'Detriot' all the time as a kid.

  • i4 v6 or v8?

    nice chevy 4x4 motelcambodia

  • It's a 3-53N 3-cylinder. The 6V53 sounds somewhat similar. However, the 3-53N did find its way into some Stepvans produced from the mid 1960s to early 1970s.

  • I do remember seeing Wonder Bread step vans with Grumman and Boyertown bodies with either 4-53's in them or 3-53's, depending on the size of the truck. I was told they all had Ford chassis under them. Like Hotrod mentioned, I used to see many a truck with a "Screaming, Smokin' Jimmy" as a kid. The 6V-53 especially was popular in GMC and IHC commercial trucks as well as many fire apparatus out my way during the 1970's.

  • nice, i want to get a 4-53 or a 6v71 into a 70's f-250 one day, screaming down the highway

  • i drove a 30k lb truck with 48 foot trailer at a local college fro trucking, it had a jake brake

  • needs a jake brake

  • Would sound great, but the truck has to be at least 17 1/2 tons.

  • it could have easily weighed more than that, four stroke

detroit 6 cyl, fun stuff.. hard though

  • Here's a photo of a truck that's 99% identical to the one we had with the 6V-53T (YouTube won't allow web addresses, so you "do the math."):

    3w(dot)seagraveowners(dot)org(slash)CorpusChristiTX(dot)htm

    Enjoy the photo!!

  • When I play this video, I move the image up and just imagine this is the old 1959 Seagrave K-cab fire truck with its screaming 6V-53T coming up the street, turning on its lights, slowing down to angle itself, then stopping before backing into the firehouse.

  • Before that truck even appears out from behind the trees, almost a quarter-mile away, the Detroit Roar tells all who can hear, "Here I come!".

  • Cummins suck. They're are a "me too" engine.

  • This engine sounds just like a 6V-53, my favorite engine. When I was a volunteer fireman, we repowered our old 1959 Seagrave cab-forward pump with a 6V-53T, rated at 225 HP, replacing a V-12 gas that was 265 HP. The 6V-53T had a 6" exhaust pipe and boy, it sounded MEAN!!

  • Aluminium block detroit? Must be nice and light. Ive got an iron 3-53 in a little international truck. Its probably a little bit too heavy for it but what the hey. I did'nt know Detroit made alloy motors. What HP is it?

  • Amazing job! Now, I would like to see a 5-minute long drive in this tricked-out Chev.

  • Ok I have more. Look to find em.

  • Does this truck have a very loud air horn?

  • Yes A train Horn. I will get a video of, never thought of blowing it in the videos.

  • Great! Can't wait to hear it; it's going to be a massive blast, eh?

  • This is one of the coolest things I've seen on YT yet! What I wouldn't give for this truck..
