I think that the Mega Drive soundtrack is superior to the Amiga version. The digitized drums and speech is of higher quality, and the instruments have much more variety. The Amiga version struggles with the fact that the game still runs on 512K, so there is far less space left in memory for better samples. Since FM instruments need only a few bytes of parameters, the Mega Drive version consumes much less memory. Plus, I think that Turrican 3 wasn't top priority.
Digitized samples was better than FM synths at my advice, especially for this game.
I love more the AMIGA soundtrack: was more intense than this one.
You have to calculate also that, in the intro and ending of the game, the AMIGA version had a special sound routine for mix 7 channels into the original 4 of the AMIGA, for that the soundtrack was spectacular.
AMIGA has 4 PCM channels, MD has 5 FM + 1 PCM channel.
I think you oversimply it a bit. Samples can sound better than FM, but FM can also sound better than samples. FM requires more skill to make good sounds, while samples enable you to digitize any sound source you want. With FM however, one can create a bigger range of sounds with far less memory, imprtant if you only have 1MB of cartridge space.
Btw, the Mega Drive has 5 FM channels, 1 PCM and 4 PSG channels = 10 sound channels. Mega Turrican makes use of all those channels (even the PSG ones).
In the end, it's more a matter of taste and personal preference. You can't generally say "the Amiga has better sound than the Mega Drive" or vice versa. It's always about the skill of the composer. And to me, in this particular case, the Mega Drive version sounds more dynamic, while the Amiga version sounds more like "business as usual". Both versions are inferior to the Amiga version of Turrican II though, which has excellent tracks.
I have never played a Turrican game ever! (and I am more than old enough to have done so). This looks great, I am definitely going to check it out now, may even go to the hassle of getting an Amiga emulator up and running.
The Super Nintendo version looks and sounds better than this game, but ALL Turrican games rock. I do like the SNES game design better as well, but it's all personal taste.
To be honest, I still like the music in the C64 version of T2 most. Anyway, look at those rotating and scaling effects. Are there any other MD games that had those?
T3 Amiga is not original, you know. It was actually ported from Mega Turrican and it's an inferior version (maybe not on the music department, though).
indeedy, Turrican 2 (Amiga) is my fav of all. I really do hope they do another Turrican. I saw a vid for a 3D version which never happened. But id much prefer if they stick to 2D if Turrican 4 was to happen.
One of the games that really utilized the Genesis sound and has superior music to the snes song (first level of super turrican). This song has so much better percussion, sounds so more upbeat, and makes the play more intense.
Hey cool video, music rules! The only thing I don't like about this game is that it's tough to find, but still always on the look out to add this to my Genesis library heh.
I love how he never has his finger off the triger

I'm so glad I still have my Genesis and this cartridge :)

Mega Turrican is one of the absolute best Sega Genesis games that I've played... because of that, this ranks my favorite game on the console.
Also, the music composer "Chris Hulsebeck" really did well with this.

The only thing that beats the AMIGA version are the graphics.

It seems the genesis soundcard can be good when it wants to. This sounds amazing for a Genesis game.

BTW, love the Chris Huelsbeck tune on level one. Awesome.

Whenever you get a different powerup, it sounds like Inspector Gadget telling you what powerup it is. :P

all the console versions just did not have the feel and sound/music of the original c64/amiga games.
T2 amiga > T1 amiga > T3 amiga > snes and md T games

Mega Turrican on the Genesis smokes anything on the C64 or Amiga, so don't kid yourself. And I say this having owned all three machines.

Agree'd. So far, my second favorite song in the game. Air Ride is my favorite :).
But I think this version sounds a lot better than the SNES version. But maybe that's because I heard this version first.

Was this game as sweet as Turrican II? (I'm guessing not, although it looks good)
CenturyEndSaviour 4 years ago
Actually, it's the other way around. Turrican 3 for Amiga was a port of Mega Turrican.
