  • Mate I live in QLD Australia and my soil is pritty compact and the bottom of the grass blades are brown. My grass was dead then grew really well than its doing nothing. I have done a similar thing with a four prong manual system how long will it take to improve from puting the holes in the ground?

  • Spikes actually increase soil compaction. The best ones remove a plug of soil and you can get hand operated ones or machines.

And the point of aerating a law isn't to let water and fertilizer in. That is part of it, but not a complete answer, and it can actually cause the soil to dry out faster if you do it at the wrong time of year.

I am not even a "Professional" and know these basic facts.

  • I have a spike aerator that I use and I think it works fine but I've been told that since no dirt is pulled out it is just compacting the soil so if you really want your lawn to be the best rent a machine

  • roflmfao!

  • people who like to use machines are just wimps lol

  • @bboychi1 lol right :) I'll take you out for a day of power raking and aerating then :P

  • The result of this is analogous to breathing through a tiny straw. Renting a core aerator is just the way to go, in my opinion.

  • essentialy the machine is the way to go unless u have a small lawn, i do aeration and its to let your grass grow alot easier especially after the winter its basically relivving it
