It's funny how people that don't know the g wagon are prompt to discredit the vehicle. Any mistreated vehicle would fail a task like this. I have a g wagen and I have rescued lots of toyotas/fords/jeeps and I have never needed help. The G is one of the toughest vehicles. FYI to all those claiming that a landcruiser is better. I hope you see the one burned down in the video.
I don't get what this idiot is doing there on these standard small (!) road tires. And without deflating them it's no wonder the suspension broke. I have never been anywhere near off road but omg what an amateur.
Mercedes has a history of embarrassment like the parking lot accident showing the accident avoidance feature and now the weak suspension of its rugged vehicle. I would not be surprised that one of the 90's E class might have survived the outback as Mercedes build quality has only gone downhill since then.
Pretty impressive for a STOCK vehicle. I've only spotted G-wagens in lawyer firm parking lots and hospital parking lots in the reserved spaces. Only problem I have with the G-wagen is the lack of aftermarket offroad mods. If I were to do this trip, I would have a Ram 2500 with Carli bits and King or Fox 3.0 shocks.
Those W463s were 1) overloaded 2) driven too fast 3) equipped with optional 18 inch street rims and small street tires (small air volume). As You can see there were two other military spec W461s (one of them was a pickup with 4300 Kg GW) which made the journey without any problems.
The people here that own some other 4x4 brand think that the G's are at fault because some other company can't build a shock absorber very well?? Are you all that insecure about your little pretend 4x4's? The Gwagen is well proven to be the toughest 4x4 made by countless military, government and even Trophy racing teams. Look what's under one next time and you will shut those pie-holes quickly..
Everyone knows you lower your tire pressure to just about nothing when going over those ruts to make your tires more part of the suspension. Everyone that know anything about offroading knows that. Oh you don't. Especially if you're in a car without tough as nails suspension. Going 60 over those ruts just killed your car. Nothing wrong with the suspension just a dick head driver going to fast.
@ahage4x4 They're lucky not to be dead. Doing something stupid like that often gets people killed if thing just turn a little bad. The worst thing about it, is that they actually had to endanger other people and waste and enormous amount of resources to get them out safely.
I bet Mercedes were disappointed in all this, but the fact is a lot of overseas companies bring their vehicles over here thinking it's going to be a walk in the park, but it ain't. A couple of weeks ago it was 49 deg C in Halls Creek, that's 120 deg F. Every year people break down or get lost and die in this part of the country, so you want something reliable.
I like the way he said they were back in civilisation in Halls Creek, it's a wild old town especially on pension day.
@120Steelers so would I but, they have a saying in the outback: If you want to go into the outback then take a Range Rover. If you want to come back from the outback, take a Landcruiser. There's a lot of truth in that statement!
I love my Mitsubushi L200 , but why didnt the military invest in the land cruiser pick-up, for all conditions they are the 4x4 camels for the outback, unbeatable!!!
A lot of people here don't realize exactly how harsh these conditions are.
Your average SUV will NOT handle washboard roads for 10 hours on, they will suffer a lot more damage then just 2 shock absorbers.
There are only a handful of SUVs in the world that can take such punishment, but each one will have SOME fault arise, the question is whether it will be minor enough to repair in the bush.
Thanks to this video, all these poser car "enthusiasts" are going to think mercedes benz as a whole "sucks". I bet if they had used a land rover or a wrangler and they too had issues, then these "car guys" would have said they suck as well.
We've driven on these roads for 10 hours straight in our Toyota Prado numerous times and never had a single problem....maybe they were driving too fast? Surprising to see how many problems they had....
OKKKK......... WTF, why the HECK do you have a 1900's G wagon?? As Oppose to a New Range Rover, Ford Raptor, Jeep Wrangler, ALMOST ANY OTHER NEWER CAR, HELL CHEVY COLBALT?/////. OLDER trucks are a joke compared the the new technology avaliable for todays more FULLY CAPABLE off roaders! HELL YOU COULD HAVE RENTED A BETTER SUV.

@Toddmars you've just proven to me beyond doubt your stupidity with your lame insults. dumb cunt!! i still cant get over how funny it was when you bagged this video out for featuring G wagons that you thought were old tech and made during the 90's! I find that hilariously funny! I find it even funnier that you have to resort to insulting to me with outdated momma insults to hide your stupidity!! You are that fucking idiotic you lack originality!
SVT Raptor???!! Man I love that truck, but you won't survival in that in the desert!! You will need DESIL ENGINE!!! Everybody questions about G-class breaking down at the very first day, but that is the car drive directly from SHOWROOM, try that with you FJ or RangeRover or the NEW VERSION of Land Cruiser ! Don't compare with offroad ready vehicle or modified one.
A busted G-wagon on day one? Thats kind of a black eye on MB's part I would think. Toyota Land Cruisers and Nissan Patrols travel on roads far worse, and nothing happens to them. Sort of surprised that MB didn't bring a Land Cruiser as a support vehicle.
Although, they could have brought other vehicles, I kinda made me smile when I saw some Mercedes G-Wagens out there instead of in a urban setting with 25" Wheels. Its kinda like watching the real preppy boy play American football, of course there will be a few injuries, but its nice to know he can do it! Cool video!
lol people that thinks that a normal american truck/4x4 would be tougher than a Mercedes G-wagon and can pass that trip, makes me laugh!, Americans can make alot of good stuff, from software to weapons or space rocket, but when it comes to cars .....
Land Cruiser or Range Rover would have been better. Also you could have gotten a bunch of used Isuzu Troopers which would have faired better. Yeah they're old but they live up to their name.
Wait a minute! You mean to tell me those little bit of bumps broke that expensive piece of whatever??? C'mon I gotta say something here because I'm tired of US getting shit about quality of cars. Oh...how much is the repair to make it correct when you guys take it back to Merc?
@gm16v149 Exactly, insane. Do the google research and you'll see some american vehicles i.e trucks/suvs that would survive that and if not, wouldn't take $20,000 to fix. SMH
@telj1 Sure, but the most popular vehicle for serious 4WD out here is the Toyota Landcruiser. That Mercedes in the vid is for women running the kids to school.
Anyone who's saying H1...ask anyone in the military they will tell you its the biggest piece of crap and ALWAYS breaking down. Off road capable, yea. But wouldn't finish the trip.
If the G class breaks there, I doubt any other vehicles suggested in the other comments will survive any better. Maybe defender, but forget the new land cruiser/raptor. And hey, the 461 survived flawlessly.
I would have liked to see them take multiple vehicles and then see which one had less problems: Land Cruiser, Raptor, Range Rover, etc. Really surprised Inside Line didn't take advantage of the opportunity to do such a comparison.
@JPCreativePro I'm assuming that Mercedes Benz financially supported this expedition considering all the G-Wagens, banners flying, and trained factory technicians at the ready.
I doubt Edmunds could fund such an adventure on their own. Also, if you look at the very end of this film, it was produced by a different production company.
@JPCreativePro I was thinking the exact same thing, to be honest i was kind of disappointed that 5 of the mercs all had their rear shocks mangled, and it made me wonder how say a range rover would have done.
Even tho I still need to upgrade my class 5 baja bug with some Fox 3.0 bypass shocks on the rear, I still take her on this trip and pin it. If my car can handle baja, she can handle this no problem. Looks like a fun time!
Clearly that normal pedestrian version of the G wagon isn't meant for serious offroading. The "professional" version they showed is what they should have driven in the first place.
Me being an Aussie, I would definitely take the Toyota Landcruiser over anything. Extremely reliable and tough and will pretty much go anywhere! The Merc is a good 4WD as well but to be honest, its no match for the Landcruiser!
why everyone hating, just because they cant afford a G class, and how they would buy how many ever jeeps with the price of one. Mercedes made the first gas powered car, and alot of other patents that other companys use on their cars 50 years later. so what if it has a few breakdowns, a stock jeep would do the same, just get it customized.
i would still want a f250 diesel. turbo diesel 7.3l with the intercoolar and a stick shift. i would build her myself . and with a big lift, 44s and a rear locker.. she would go anywhere. diesel kicks ass
@jaman585 that would be a hummer h1 alpha. yeah baby. duramax power and allison tranny, with legendary off road ability. just bring extra diesel with you. alot of extra.
@mcorwin129 ford raptor?????? Are you kidding me? that American piece of shit would have broken down before it even leaves the gas station. You need a genuine 4wd like a toyota landcruiser buddy. Not some steaming pretend wanna be, unreliable american piles of shit. The outback would destroy that piece of turd.
@JSSJeepin sorry asswipe. i dont own a raptor. I dont need to. Americans make SHIT cars. shit quality. piss poor reliability and quite frankly poorly built with cheap nasty materials. I need say no more. Which is the reason WHY the american automotive industry is so fucked up right now. Need I say more? Ass wipe. Come back and make a comment when america starts making consistently good and reliable cars comparable to the japanese and europeans. until then fuck off
what will it take to PROVE to people that German cars are absolute pieces of unreliable shit ... EVERYthing breaks on them ..yes, the motors CAN do 300 k ... but replacing every other component alone the way doresnt make them good!
good video. though i would have done it in a landcruiser or hilux. a merc g wagon is just not built to withstand what the outback can throw at it, and it costs a fortune when it does break because its a mercedes.
This was fantastic, i would like to to see more like this one right here. It reminded me of Top Gear (uk) which i'm sure all gear heads around the world would agree is the best car show in the world. Way to up the game
It's funny how people that don't know the g wagon are prompt to discredit the vehicle. Any mistreated vehicle would fail a task like this. Clearly that normal pedestrian version of the G wagon isn't meant for serious offroading. The "professional" version they showed is what they should have driven in the first place.

Would like to have seen how a Jeep Wrangler or Land Rover Defender would cope with this sort of mission...
PeetPeeet 2 months ago
that's a lot of problems plaguing a 82 grand mercedes.. tsk tsk.

New respect for Alistair. I still banged your mother, though. In the outback.

35 degree? that's fucking normal temp in any tropical country
WhatThePresidentSays 2 months ago 3
I bet all kinds of stuff will break while driving over that corrugated surface quickly, regardless of your vehicle choice.
autoxerwgn 2 months ago
Me being an Aussie, I would definitely take the Toyota Landcruiser over anything. Extremely reliable and tough and will pretty much go anywhere! The Merc is a good 4WD as well but to be honest, its no match for the Landcruiser!
JordanAndrew227 2 months ago 2
Fail!!!! Thats why. Chevy or ford.
Mctsep 2 months ago
why everyone hating, just because they cant afford a G class, and how they would buy how many ever jeeps with the price of one. Mercedes made the first gas powered car, and alot of other patents that other companys use on their cars 50 years later. so what if it has a few breakdowns, a stock jeep would do the same, just get it customized.
mankaman3 2 months ago
I live in Australia and my work takes me to the outback, the only 4WDs you see out there are Toyota Landcruisers. They are almost bulletproof.

i thought the g wagen was a german military vehicle in the west berlin. to patrol the wall.
12valvepower1 2 months ago
i would still want a f250 diesel. turbo diesel 7.3l with the intercoolar and a stick shift. i would build her myself . and with a big lift, 44s and a rear locker.. she would go anywhere. diesel kicks ass
12valvepower1 2 months ago
i want a jeep with the 3l turbo diesel.
12valvepower1 2 months ago
mercedes sucks nowadays. there not as good as they used to be
12valvepower1 2 months ago
Land rover suitable for these kinds of terrain not a Mercedes
VideoDude6475 2 months ago
And how many Wrangler Unlimited Rubicons can you get for the price of an inferior G Wagon?
ApexIXMR 2 months ago 2
Actually the g wagon is pretty good because any other suv would have broken down too.
liawkaiping 2 months ago
Should do a outback trail with many suvs. G-Wagen,landcruiser, wrangler, landrover, patrol, chevy and ford an a hummer
jaman585 2 months ago
@jaman585 that would be a hummer h1 alpha. yeah baby. duramax power and allison tranny, with legendary off road ability. just bring extra diesel with you. alot of extra.
12valvepower1 2 months ago
tonight! we drive a mercedes through the outback
(i think they top geared this one)
critcole 2 months ago
lmao i wonder how much it cost to fix after that trip?
Slacking02 2 months ago
this is not a good show for the g-wagon. perhaps they should have brought along a DEFENDER 110 TDI. I doubt that would have so many issues.
CEEPMDEE 2 months ago
Should of used a Toyota
mattkenny666123 2 months ago

next time bring a ford raptor
mcorwin129 2 months ago 28
@mcorwin129 dude u really suggesting that "found dead on road" would do better than the mercedes. i dont think so
stararmy314 2 months ago
@mcorwin129 ford raptor?????? Are you kidding me? that American piece of shit would have broken down before it even leaves the gas station. You need a genuine 4wd like a toyota landcruiser buddy. Not some steaming pretend wanna be, unreliable american piles of shit. The outback would destroy that piece of turd.
robbyjai 2 months ago
@robbyjai and how many raptors have you owned?.................
thought so.
clench your ass more, you won't be so loud next time when talking out of it.
JSSJeepin 2 months ago
@JSSJeepin sorry asswipe. i dont own a raptor. I dont need to. Americans make SHIT cars. shit quality. piss poor reliability and quite frankly poorly built with cheap nasty materials. I need say no more. Which is the reason WHY the american automotive industry is so fucked up right now. Need I say more? Ass wipe. Come back and make a comment when america starts making consistently good and reliable cars comparable to the japanese and europeans. until then fuck off
robbyjai 2 months ago
what will it take to PROVE to people that German cars are absolute pieces of unreliable shit ... EVERYthing breaks on them ..yes, the motors CAN do 300 k ... but replacing every other component alone the way doresnt make them good!
cb7pwn 2 months ago
geez. how can something this expensive break so easily? MotorTrend never had any trouble with a Subaru Outback.
itsTiLER 2 months ago
I would pick a V10 VW Touareg with mud terrains. :P

How do you spell FAIL? Mercedes G-Wagen.
ScLeCo 2 months ago
Lol. They wanted to prove how tough their cars were. Instead they proved just what they couldn't do. FAIL.
neostardust 2 months ago 3
They shoulda brought a base-line CHerokee with them.. see how it would have done. Haha.
LittleMikeStarCraft 2 months ago
good video. though i would have done it in a landcruiser or hilux. a merc g wagon is just not built to withstand what the outback can throw at it, and it costs a fortune when it does break because its a mercedes.
ozzycarnut 2 months ago 2
i wonder how my sunfire would do in that course :P

This was fantastic, i would like to to see more like this one right here. It reminded me of Top Gear (uk) which i'm sure all gear heads around the world would agree is the best car show in the world. Way to up the game
