Vincent van Gogh a real master in they art, but the poeple didnt liked his way of art they wanted him to be like all arts man he was sick of it. How i know this? Im from Holland and i wish there was more art i was in the museum of Amsterdam but
Vincent was so frustrated being among master artists who were actually selling their paintings. I studied Vincent and from what I read his last words were 'Human sadness will never end'. I went to the VG museum in Amsterdam and viewed 'Sunflowers' at the Philadelphia Art Museum. Overwhelming art.
i feel so bad for him, his painting are absolutely beautiful. i cant believe that he went mad, cut off his ear and then committed suicide. can you believe it?! there is a musician named don McLean that wrote a song called Vincent and was dedicated to Vincent van gogh. it is a very poetic song. i personally think it is a beautifully written song that really puts a good image of who Vincent was and described his artwork wonderfully.
@boogiebuddy01 This may be nice to believe, but it's not true. Not all of us have the same possibilities. We should be cherishing our differences not agonizing to be the same. This is the problem with education in America, and many other countries. We are different, we can not all be painters and physicists. We must find what we are all individually good at.
So sad that there was no one who could help Vincent, such a tortured mind. His work is his gift to us who are fortunate enough to be able to enjoy and respect the man.
@cosg9531 - ...and you're behaving like a bit of a fool. Painting is about Van Gogh AND Parrish, surely you can see that?

@cgreatestarsenal FRIEND, don't pay attention to those brain-dead views! Let's defend the memory of monsieur vincent with intense vigour from the philistines whose business is nothing but vigourously blackening the reputation of the master painter from holland. RIP, monsieur vincent. greettings from the PH.
Incredible that despite shooting himself in the chest he was able to walk back to his lodgings before dying in the arms of his beloved brother, Theo, two days later. According to Theo his last words were "La tristesse durera toujours" (the sadness will last forever). Very sad also that just six months later Theo would die from Syphilis.
sinds i can remember i love Vincent ,for his work and as a person, i believe there wil never be a man and artist like him again. he was uniek !
august 2010 i went to Auverse Sur Oise ,and spent a day in Vincents town. saw all the places were he painted and lived (Auberge Ravoux). and the garden of Dr Paul Gachet. and the crowfield. and last his Grave.picked some flowers to.

Thanks for the sound! I chanced on this tragic clip while searching the song 'For Vincent, Starry, Starry Night" I agree, greatness is often appreciated after death... Wish he had friends and help then....RIP , M'sieur Van Gogh
It is of course difficult , to live without recognition and appreciation for your life's work. I believe that if the mental health system were able to understand and treat Mr. VanGogh, he may have lived to produce many more paintings as well as enjoying a productive life. Although with his mental issues controlled, would he have produced the paintings he did? Wasn't his mental state a major factor in his work? Sadly we will never know. And- Supply & demand, fewer products=higher value.
I have learnt so much today. An ad on TV played starry starry night. My husband and I argued as to who sang it. I found my way here. This is wonderful. Thank you. I feel the need to investigate more.
I believe Van Gogh would have done better paintings than he did then but even though he didnt live long he lived long enough to become the most recognized and probably the most talented artist of all time. RIP VINCENT VAN GOGH
If you do not hear the soundtrack on this video, go to the lower right of the video viewing window and change your settings from 360p to 240p. That should fix it.
As I recall, there was an newspaper article about a woman who had sold paints to him as a girl. She said he had a bad temper, and he smelled really bad.
I saw a Van Gogh exhibition several years ago in San Francisco (My God, the colors were so much more intense than anything I had ever seen in a printed illustration of his work! I saw a few, including "Starry Night over the Rhône" a few days ago at the post-impressionist exhibit from the Musée d'Orsay. The shots I see on my computer seem to do much better on the colors.)
Vincent did not die instantly. After he shot himself in the chest, he walked back to the inn and died 2 days later. His brother Theo wrote of the account and reported Vincent's last words were "The Sadness Will Last Forever" in French.
My understanding (mis?) was that Vincent took his life some time after his brother got married. There is some conjecture that this was a factor in his suicide, that perhaps he was aware that the financial support bestowed by his brother was burdening his brother and his new family. What is your take on this?
@zoyclem -- If you do not hear the soundtrack on this video, go to the lower right of the video viewing window and change your settings from 360p to 240p. That should fix it.
If you want to really find out what Vincent was like, read the collection of letters between he and his brother Theo. After Vincent died, Theo died less than 6 months later and Theo's wife had the letters bound. The book is, "Dear Theo". Vincent once said, "It is not my fault my paintings do not sell, one day they will be worth more than the price of the paint and my own soul." In the 90's the highest price paid for a painting was one of his for $34 million
I've read 'Lust for Life', it's Vincent's biography by Irving Stone.I love this book,it is written there how it really was.Vincent was too ill to work so he took his life..He lived for the art. Real genius.
"Starry Starry Night, Paint your palette blue and grey, look out on a summers day, with eyes that see the darkness in my soul, shadows on the hills, sketch the trees and the daffodils, catch the breeze and the winter chills.."
@Ventana147 You can do some pretty crazy and backwards stuff when you have severe depression. It completely messes with one's inhabitions and can sometimes make people act in a manner that is opposite of their regular demeanor.
Vincent Van Gogh had a gift of insight many fail to understand this, He was troubled to understand this gift, Many visions he had seen in his life, But many called him insane, He was not Insane at all, If he had only known what we all know today, He would never had taken his life that day,
van gogh. not a good painter, and he made lousy violins aswell? 0r was that stradivarius?(joke sorry) the only painting i like of this bloke, is the one with the crows flying off into the horizen, and you dont have to be very clever to interperet the meaning of crows flying into the horizen, nice colours.
@marmoratus There must be something wrong with your eyes then. Not a good painter? You may not like his work, that's a matter of taste (a very poor taste imo) but saying he's not a good painter is insane.
this si really sad, because when he was alive they didnt take his art seriesly and when he died he was very popular because of his art. and that means he died knowing nobody liked what he did best and thats sad ( sry 4 bad english spelling )
@damormon234 i think he had a painful ear infection, he was also a very lonely man, it may not have mattered that his genius was not recognized, but he was alone with perhaps no prospect of finding love, would'nt that push you to the brink.
I too suffer from the Van Gogh's Disease (bipolar disorder), and aspire to be a great artist as well, but i will not have it destroy me like it had done to him.
Vincent was and always will be my favorite artist and one of the greatest who ever lived.
I was never a fan of Van Gogh, but I am intrigued by him and his own self expression from his pain and suffering from clinical depression. I take meds for depression.
well the story is that he shot himself in the stomache after drawing a painting, then he crawled to his home, was rushed to medical help and that was when the last person to see him was his brother...his whole story is very sad and tragic...
My art history professor lectured on him a few days ago. He was rejected by his family and couldn't hold down a proper job. In the end, he botched his suicide and it took him at least a day to die. He told Theo, "See? I can't even do this right.
I have the heart of an artist i guess and it is a heavy on ones heart BUT I KNOW its the unfeeling ones who thinkartist heart crazy i know their is many out there who feel this way.
When the passion is so profound and entrined with your since of beingand the world cant see youor except this in the norm qf society well you have i totally feel & understand his pain
He died because of lousy medical care; the infection killed him, not the gun. Also, we have good reason to believe that he had systemic infection and disease, poisoning, etc. which also greatly affected his health physically and mentally. This holds true in any age, for any person.
Nice film! The only van Gogh works that I really love are his paintings of shoes ("Potato Eaters" is good too), but I certainly feel sorry for the guy; he had a rough life. Your film portrayed his instability very well, I thought.
V.G. called it flashes. This led him to a higher state of senses. Some sources say, that by feed of paint. It gave creative power and also lead him to insanity... hey, check out his drawings, they are just perfect
Hm, sounds a lot like how some painters I've heard about take drugs just for inspiration. I think it may be due to the stress as to why they take them in the first place.
Also, artists who create a movement for other artists can't normally be recognized as such until the movement is clear for being so.
It's actually good that artists take time to be recognized, because it at least helps in preventing glorifying the undeserved. Mass consideration SHOULD take time it if it's to be careful instead of spontaneous and shallow.
It may not seem fair, but it stands to reason. For starters, when an artist is alive, his work is not done. That applies to the POV of both the artist and observers of his work. Normally, those who appreciate an artist are not doing so around any particular single object but his life's work on the whole.
Actually it has been recently said that he didn't cut his own ear: it was Gogan! Eventhough they were not friends anymore, Vicent decided not to blame him.
@extremelyindependent With the medical care we have today, Vincent van Gogh very well could have been saved with surgery ... but they did not have that capability back then .... no antibiotics either .... infections were much more deadly in those days ....
Hardest thing for any artist: I have something to give but nobody wants what I have to offer. Counting on how shallow publishing or gallery requirements are as to what is or is not art, what they will accept, and what will sell, as an artist to I feel Vangoghs pain.
@thechaz83 His brother funded him his entire life= an overwhelming sense of remorse about never being able to repay his brother, plus his intense religious passions//mental health pains seem to attribute to his sadnesses. He did not get pains from an inability to pay his electricity bill! Get a job, fund yourself to paint or what ever it is you do, then there is no pain! I fund my own passions. If I try very hard maybe I'll earn a crumb from what I create. stop feeling sorry for yourself!
Vincent was a true artistic soul. He loved and craved to be loved. When denied it, or feeling as though he would be abandoned, he would go crazy and violent on the person. When anyone opens up to love in this world, it does more harm than good. Vincents childhood was very disturbing for him. Plus no one loving his artistic abilities and being misunderstood is terribly hard to accept. Near the end of his life I'm sure his faith in his own work was declining.

the gun killed him not the infection
boomera2z9 2 years ago
He died because of lousy medical care; the infection killed him, not the gun. Also, we have good reason to believe that he had systemic infection and disease, poisoning, etc. which also greatly affected his health physically and mentally. This holds true in any age, for any person.

Nice film! The only van Gogh works that I really love are his paintings of shoes ("Potato Eaters" is good too), but I certainly feel sorry for the guy; he had a rough life. Your film portrayed his instability very well, I thought.

Your comment is interesting, though could you explain it? I'd like to understand it (and I think I've heard of it before, not sure though)
sk8terGrlM 2 years ago
V.G. called it flashes. This led him to a higher state of senses. Some sources say, that by feed of paint. It gave creative power and also lead him to insanity... hey, check out his drawings, they are just perfect
schmidt969 2 years ago
Hm, sounds a lot like how some painters I've heard about take drugs just for inspiration. I think it may be due to the stress as to why they take them in the first place.

It's somewhat unfair that such talent and greatness is most often seen after death.
sk8terGrlM 2 years ago 27
@sk8terGrlM Very true. While you see a masterpiece other's see your work as trash. It's a shame other's can't see thing's the way you do. If only....

@NaomiKalah
TheJediCharles 1 year ago
@sk8terGrlM
It may not seem fair, but it stands to reason. For starters, when an artist is alive, his work is not done. That applies to the POV of both the artist and observers of his work. Normally, those who appreciate an artist are not doing so around any particular single object but his life's work on the whole.

@sk8terGrlM its like an utter disregard for rare talent!

Actually it has been recently said that he didn't cut his own ear: it was Gogan! Eventhough they were not friends anymore, Vicent decided not to blame him.

Vincent van Gogh cut off his ear i didn't see the patch for it...
indychase1997 2 years ago
He only cut off the bottom of his ear lobe. At about 3min.47 sec. in the video you can see the bottom of his ear is missing.

Why did he died two days later after he killed himself ?!
This isn't logical although I very like his paintings.
Paretifube 2 years ago
He shot himself in the stomach and did not die immediately. As it states at the end of the film, Vincent died two days later.
extremelyindependent 2 years ago
@extremelyindependent With the medical care we have today, Vincent van Gogh very well could have been saved with surgery ... but they did not have that capability back then .... no antibiotics either .... infections were much more deadly in those days ....

Hardest thing for any artist: I have something to give but nobody wants what I have to offer. Counting on how shallow publishing or gallery requirements are as to what is or is not art, what they will accept, and what will sell, as an artist to I feel Vangoghs pain.

JynxyTheLynxy 2 years ago
@thechaz83 His brother funded him his entire life= an overwhelming sense of remorse about never being able to repay his brother, plus his intense religious passions//mental health pains seem to attribute to his sadnesses. He did not get pains from an inability to pay his electricity bill! Get a job, fund yourself to paint or what ever it is you do, then there is no pain! I fund my own passions. If I try very hard maybe I'll earn a crumb from what I create. stop feeling sorry for yourself!
fragrantvagrant 1 year ago
Vincent was a true artistic soul. He loved and craved to be loved. When denied it, or feeling as though he would be abandoned, he would go crazy and violent on the person. When anyone opens up to love in this world, it does more harm than good. Vincents childhood was very disturbing for him. Plus no one loving his artistic abilities and being misunderstood is terribly hard to accept. Near the end of his life I'm sure his faith in his own work was declining.
