I brought up Sao Paulo because that is the part of Brasil I spent time in, and you people are trying to compare NO to Brasil and Rio, so why not bring Sao Paulo up?
Per Capita numbers for Sao Paulo are about the same as NO, but when you look at the per capita rate for people 20-29 years old the rate jumps up to over 200 murders/100,000 in Sao Paulo. Maybe NO doesn't keep track on rates for specific age groups, but Brasil does.

For all you people talking numbers, here is a little stat from Sao-Paulo.info:
"The number one cause of death among youth from 15-24 is murder"
And that is for a city with over 11 million people, not just a stat for the favelas. For a city with a population that high to have murder as the number 1 killer of 15-24 year olds is pretty damn crazy. I can almost guarantee that 15-24 year olds are getting killed in car accidents than by murder in New Orleans.

Trying to compare NO to Brasil is stupid. NO is no joke, but favelas are on a whole other level. To say murder rates in Rio aren't high is just ignorant. Half the murders in the favelas don't even get recorded. Someone said Brasil is 3rd world, you're wrong. The problem in brasil is the difference between their rich and their poor is so much worse than what we deal with. I'm Miami born and raised, spent much time in NO, and even more time in Brasil.
