Hi, this is the wierdest thing. I dont think even David Attenborough has this on film. Hah! Good fun and a fascinating collection of videos. I am impressed.
Mary Baker at RIU studies this exact behavior: Here's what she had to say:
"The substances that elicit this behavior are pungent and/or stimulating when applied to the body...In the wild, the kinds of things monkeys rub with vary from site to site. Even when the same substances are available at several sites, the items a particular group uses for rubbing is likely to be different, suggesting a socially transmitted pattern of use.
I think you are right. That's the first thought that came to my mind. I'm sure you've experienced the stinging orange, lemon or grapefruit juice causes when you get it in a cut or in your eye. Imagine being covered from head to toe with it. I'm sure it works! If it doesn't kill them, surely the mites, fleas, etc. fall or jump off trying to get away from the uncomfortable sensation.
Ah, the orange. I bet that guy loves oranges. Isn't it an innate sort of craving, for him, for us. I know I certainly love oranges and citrus. And I'd run an orange through my hair and take that as my bath, especially if they are quite plentiful. That monkey gave me a good tip. He's our cousin right, and someone in our family millions of years was a glutton for oranges, and the gene to synthesise vit. c was corrupted by one bit, ye scurvy dogs are monkeys.
its like a urine wash most monkeys do it?

And also:
"The function of this behavior may be for wound and ectoparasite treatment. It may reinforce social bonds or the monkeys may simply enjoy rubbing."
