One of my best friends had an Irish Wolfhound when we were kids. Yes, they are gentle giants, but trust me you wouldn't want to piss one off. They are very protective of children and his dad had to make sure that the dog was outside if he ever had to discipline one of the kids. Keep in mind that these dogs were used by farmers in Ireland to protect their sheep from the wolves and would kill wolves by grabbing them by the throat and shaking them like a rag doll. They are by no means pussy dogs.

Well, poodles were originally bred as hunting dogs. I am talking about the breed that is not quite as big as wolfhounds. Were you thinking of miniature poodles? Also, the bite strength of a wolfhound can, and has crushed the skulls of pit bulls. They are called "wolf"hounds for a reason. Maybe not as big as the dog you describe, but no pushover.
