It may be odd,but I say merry Christmas. I say it not just because I'm a follower of Christ but because some people it may open their eyes about what Christmas is truly about-the birth of our lord. Happy holidays is a term that should be used throughout December because Christmas isn't the only holiday. I think that people should celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25th for the real meaning;thus say merry Christmas. Ppl shouldn't be offended for one saying it on Christmas. That's what the
@Loveendssuicide12 People can be so narrow minded about these things sometimes, heh. But I agree, the general feeling of merriment should be felt! forget labels!
@Podsmiths maybe something like what your fathers experience with raising a CODA kids? Whats his pro/con of raising hearing kids? SOmething like that. I am trying to learning more about KODA/CODA community...if that make sense..meow?
This is the first time I watched Dine & Sign, and it's a great concept!
I do tend to switch it up, from saying "Merry Christmas" to "Happy Holidays", in no particular order or fashion. Your father is cool, Alex. I miss the days of being in a sign language class.
@zottepark Thanks so much, Steve! I really enjoy your enthusiasm and interest in the stuff I'm creating! It's really awesome to have such kickbutt support. It was a great conversation to have since all the "controversy" to the saying- though I was kinda floored by my dad's answer of "Dec 1st is too soon" I never really though about it like that... that it's a specific day rather than a general season. But I think my dad is very specific about stuff like that.
@Podsmiths Hey there. I don't think I know your and your Dad's name. MInd if I asked for them? I have been home for the holidays for the last two 2 years... I decided to get off of the long haul and am now driving locally.
After your Dad's thoughts between Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, I think it's better for me to say Happy Holidays from now on. Hehehe.
@deaftrucker Hey man! My father's name is Ray, I like to keep it hidden so everyone can just imagine him as just a luminous father figure online, Ha! I was very impressed with the idea of driving all over the country, but I'm sure you're enjoying the rest, too! Happy Holidays to you as well, he sure does have a point about Christmas being a day... or that someone may cut your head off ;) He cracks me up! Any plans for New Years?
@Podsmiths New Year's-- Think I'm gonna go and watch my friend perform in his band. He's a guitarist. Does your father have a favorite music instrument? Think he will look good playing a Sax! Hehehehe. I'm sure you've got big plans for your New Year's. Happy New Year to you both!
One christmas my father had not got me and my sister anything for christmas. His reason for doing so was to show us the true meaning of christmas that it was just not about getting gifts and whatnot. Now it has showed me that material things are not as important as we make them out to be. I don't really hear many people talking about Jewish people at all. I don't remember the last time I said merry christmas I only ever say it to someone if they say it first but to me its just another holiday
@JostenDooley I think that's a great thing to do! But I'm the weird hippie uncle to my Brother's Son (he's 6 months) but I have made my claim that I'm not buying that kid anything, I'm going to teach him and make him things. But I digress.
You prove my point exactly. The more effort you put the more value you give. I always remember a tale from a show a saw about a kid that walked 20 miles to the sea to pick shells for his teacher on her birthday and she said, OMG you went so far just for shells and he told her "but teacher the walk was part of the gift". So you video is definitely a major gift. We have limited seconds of life so your time is the most precious gift you can give! I give websites so like you I give my time too!
@aWiserSolutionPay Just wish more people thought like us! But our whole economy is built upon buying junk... That story was great, sums up exactly what we're talking about.
Well gift is not a part of my structure either but getting together for a feast and enjoying the lights and the neat making up of normal alienated people and things like that...well that is what makes it special. I give gifts often but when I feel like it without needing to such as on the gifts holidays! But realize that a nice video is a gift, very personal and special for the time you took; not expense--afte rall what is more precious to life than time? So you are a soft gift giver after all!
@aWiserSolutionPay lol! I know, but I can't say it like that. My goal is to rid people of the hold that MONEY has on people. I seen tons of people value their money over time, my dad included! So by not "buying" any gifts, I may seem like a jerk, but videos aren't easy to make! But I am probably overloading myself with work, as long as people enjoy it, I cannot complain! Nothing like hard work, right?
And as the spirit of good fellowship gets replaced with the spirit of commercialism and we lose sight of the beauty that Christmas represented we lose a little part of our societal bond and good will and soon Christmas is for everyone but the traditions that helped bond us together and be festive with their symbolism is gone and so is a great deal of joy. I was born in a communist country and I therefore I am not religious but living in a small town that celebrates taught me the value of spirit
@aWiserSolutionPay Thanks for sharing those personal insights with me. I can honestly say that I agree with you on all those points. but WE'RE the weird ones for not buying gifts and toys for our 'loved ones'. I am putting a firm stance on 'no gift buying' this year, but that doesn't mean I won't create something nice like a video or whatever. As I grow older, I enjoy realizing the fallacies in people's beliefs and try to narrow in on something more wholesome. But again, it's my fallacy ;)
What your dad said about toys being tougher before was right! Even when I was little which was just a decade ago things were better made. The Gameboy I got when I was 4 is still in perfect working order, as opposed to the Nintendo DS that I got 4 years ago. & I totally agree that Christmas has become too commercial. I actually wrote an article about it in the ReVista Magazine. It should be coming out any day now. Here in Greece we do it your dad's way and say Happy Holidays all month.
I agree with you but the reality is as you father stated things are changing and his views of today's world being more impersonal is the key. Happy Holidays is too generic when there is a specific holidays. Xmas is 100% christian its true but it has been celebrated forever it seems and it is a tradition that everyone celebrated even if they called it something else. The sad part about this debate is that the spirit of togetherness that Xmas and turkey day and other bonding holidays leaving us
Interesting view from your father about Merry Xmas. My Wife is a Filipina and their customs is to say Merry Christmas on Dec 1, I think in the past everyone used to say from Dec. 1 but your father has a good happy medium! Thanx for the lesson!
I understand what he is saying about the old days but I think that applies only to large secular cities, in small town I believe Xmas is still a joy and I really love it when I lived in them even if I am a grouch myself, it is such a beautiful spirit!
@aWiserSolutionPay Thanks for checking out the video! I think the holidays give us a lot of opportunity to reflect upon things, and bring things back to basics. Maybe I am just an extreme minimalist right now, but things can easily become over emphasized and philosophies can seem skewed. I just couldn't believe the news about all the concern for Merry Christmas v Happy Holidays and how people get offended so easily. But I open it up to everyone else to tell me what's up.
good stuff I agree with your dad merry christmas is used far too much I would only use it on the day but thats just me its like a birthday you dont say happy birthday any other time than on the day, the world is so public now and thats why I think we are worse off, people are so aware and accustomed to every type of event that we shield ourselves from the world for safety, Your problems are someone elses joy in this world thats why I do my best because ones success can be someone elses nightmare
@MrSportsking5 I like your birthday analogy, a great point! I think having everything be public can help with transparency and have people own up to things. Heck, I struggle with that idea with every video, especially this Holiday one- but I keep telling myself "No, there are ways to defend everything". I think there is a hypersensitivity to life now, which I notice a lot in my dad's philosophy- he thinks the world is crumbling, and yet, it's never been better for humankind.
That's what the day is!all other December days should be happy holidays.
