  • THANKS TO YOU I CAN PLAY BY EAR AND I ONLY PLAYED TWO YEARS PIANO!!!!!! THANKS

  • really? portal? lmfao

  • I don't know what I was thinking, trying to play two songs instead of one at a time. I'm trying to play "Lyra Forest bgm" from Pokemon Ranger and "Stamp on the Ground" by Italobrothers. :P

  • wow ive been playing piano or 5 years and i've been looking at the tutorials of the songs imma do but now imma try learning it by ear and im only 11 years old!! im playing river flows in you for my talkeny show this year. wish me good luck!

  • I was wondering if anyone could help me? I always seem to want to apply math to my piano playing and it's stopping me from playing fluidly... Are there any tips or tricks to it? When I see someone play or I play I think "when I play that note with my left hand my right hand needs to play that note" so it kind of feels robotic at times...

  • @GeeOh2803 math can be a pretty big part in playing any kind of music! try learning the song one hand at a time and then put it together? i dunno... or find a song that means so much to your heart you forget how to count :) those are my favorite.

  • @GeeOh2803 Just don't think about it. That's what my piano teacher says.

First play separately, then together slowly, until you think you've got it and then at normal speed or close to it and practice practice practice...just don't think about it...I used to be like that but then it comes to you. It also helps for fun to play it as fast as you can once you've learnt it....but not for serious practice lol.

Or it could be there song is just too hard for you at this time.

Write it down if by ear!

  • Portal!

  • stop bein a stuck up bitch and saying all these things you have to have to be able to play by ear..i can play better by ear than you and this is my 2nd year of playing. Stop being conceited and rude sounding because all your doing is giving piano a bad name. after 7 years of playin your probably like 13 and been forced to play since a little child.

  • @joker59142006 upload something

  • @joker59142006 He's like 16 or 17 :P

How is this conceited and rude? They're just suggestions and people spammed him with requests of tutorials, so he decided to help them learn by themselves. No need to boast with the "I can play better than you" and you do realize whatever you post on the internet stays there right? 8D If you don't like the video, then don't comment, seriously, no need to be a troll.

  • I kind of know how to do this but thanks for the valuable tips! I can easily do the single notes but not the multiples. =/ Is there a tip for what I should do first for hearing doubles/triple+ notes?

  • haha not like through the fire and flames

  • Thanks for the info!

  • thank you this helped alot!

  • lol still alive from "port hole"

  • So...does that mean you can play like " Kyle Landry....." : ) Though that would be amazing, Not likely unless you practice for a few years. Just don't give up!! " Thumbs up if you agree."

  • Comment removed

  • this whole debate is redundant. just show some gratitude to the awesome guy who took the time to actually explain this. obviously, if this works for you, do it. if it doesn't tough luck. that, is that.

  • @PokeguyDavid Sooo for step 4 you just take a note in the melody and add the 2 other notes of the major/minor chord to it?

  • i try doin ur steps tht shit is still hard ???:/

  • OK now where is the tutorial on "How to fish" ?

  • If anyone can answer, please do because I can't seem to resolve it. I was wondering if you were to start the song on a different note, but you had all the right intervals in the right places would it be like a transposition?

  • unfortunately it's not as simple to figure out the the melody or other notes, ok you can get the pitches etc but it still need to be musically correct or it will sound terrible, so you need some music knowledge to do this the same goes for writing songs.

  • portal :D

  • I agree with RoytonValeAFC

it is a natural talent - me and my friend can both play piano but I need sheet music to know which notes i have to play whereas my friend: you can play any note or chord or whatever and she will tell you what it is without looking at the piano - she has perfect pitch.

Here she's just telling us how to guess our way through a piece which anyone can do but it's NOT the same as having perfect pitch

  • @NICooLERthanyou94

It doesn't take perfect pitch to be able to play everything back after hearing it once, relative pitch is an acquired skill that after enough practice and listening to music you can begin to outline the song you are playing easily just by singing or listening to a note in your head and then play it

  • @TheCccomment hmmm, I'm still not convinced but okay. :)

  • @NICooLERthanyou94 Natural Talent = Beethoven playing and writing piano music while deaf or people playing the piano blind :P

Good for her then, it just means she practiced her butt off to learn those pitches. Some of us are actually watching this video to learn, improve ourselves, and probably write about our work of progress after watching it, not to judge or boast. What are you trying to accomplish here?

  • Is there any secrets that make it easyer to get and faster if pressed for time? Or is it all just practice?

  • @andrewridgeway95 Becasue i am in a bang and i want to learn a song that i love but i cant find the sheet for it... also its techno/trance/nightcore. whatever you want to call it. now it has alot of things going on at once but i have seen people play it on youtube so IDK should i go off of them or the song because i may have a diffrent interpretation of the song.

  • @andrewridgeway95 band**

  • My Teacher told me that knowing the right note right off the bat (I.e. Perfect pitch) is reserved for some people. But she went on to assure me that with practice and such I will be able to find the main melody then build on top of it.

  • Portal FTW. <3

  • Nice tutorial

and just for the record...anyone can play by ear you just got to have sensitivity for music...I was in a orchestra and I didn't know a thing about music...and I was the front snare drummer...I just felt the music...it also will apply for the notes on the piano....like my teacher said...FEEL THE MUSIC

  • If you can type on a computers keyboard without looking, you've memorized where every letter is after some practice. If you play the piano long enough, you remember where each key that makes each sound is, thus when you listen to a song you can mimic it as if you were typing out what someone is saying to you on a keyboard.

albeit a bit harder, its definitely not impossible.

  • And gosh playing by ear is hard D:

I need to learn theory first right???

  • Don't listen to RoytonValeAFC. If learning to play by ear is impossible then why would they do ear training in music class at school?

I really wanna play by ear but unfortunately I heard music class will be cancelled next year due to lack of students.

  • Tell that to all my friends who are starting to do it

  • Comment removed

  • @RoytonValeAFC Bullshit , people like u mention things like that to flatter yourself and make yourself seem amazing as if your part of some genetic elite(are u even talented yourself?). Musical ability is natural to all humans. The same way we all do math, and language. Unless u have a birth defect u should be perfectly fine. Its natural human ability to recreate phrases in their mind, and to be able to tell different sounds and pitches. Some do it better than others, but everyone CAN practice.

  • Comment removed

  • @RoytonValeAFC NOBODIES saying that you can learn natural talent. My argument is that people have the basic capability. To learn music by ear,as for how good, it depends on their ears and mind. However You stated "You cannot learn how to play by ear. Its physically impossible". So yeh now its physically impossible to learn to play by ear? now, yes, a super magical barrier stops you. Ill repeat what i said before "Some do it better than others, but everyone CAN practice".

  • Comment removed

  • @RoytonValeAFC If i understand correctly, when your refer to playing by ear you mean a talent, and not a skill. Then yes. Obviously it cant be taught some are naturally better than others and some people are completely useless. If it upsets you that the author of the video uses the term ''playing by ear'' to mean the skill of reproducing the keys, tones, pitches on a keyboard/piano at will,in any form. Get used to it, because that what the term has come to mean to many people.

  • Comment removed

  • @RoytonValeAFC Lol your fucking stupid. Are you ignoring everything ive said? I personally think your a seriously shit teacher, ever questioned your ability to teach, maybe that's a cause for the lack of understanding your students have? and secondly you underestimate the amount of people who have the ''gift' which is more common than you think. And no im not referring to messing around on the keyboard to play ba ba fucking blacksheep, im talking about proper songs that you hear on albums.

  • @RoytonValeAFC Your logic is just entirely flawed, you fail to see beyond your own point of view, and understand what im even arguing about. As a result, you claim that im jealous (really? haha) and that you earn more than me. Seriously, go fuck yourself. What next? you ahve a bigger penis than me? You sound like a douchebag. Good luck with your talent that apparently nobody else has?

  • "Playing by ear is a natural talent. Some are better than others is a silly thing to say." stop contradicting yourself. by definition if its a natural talent, then that means some people are better than others. and its not a silly thing to say your seriously confused.

  • @RoytonValeAFC Dude wow, your telling us how much you earn, seriously?

    Speaks alot about your personality

  • @RoytonValeAFC it's not a natural talent! anyone can do it with the right amount of effort. natural talent only gets you so far,

  • Comment removed

  • @RoytonValeAFC not being sad, but everyone I know that's been playing Piano for over 10 years, can play any song by only hearing it once. Even my friend at 17 who's been playing since 6 can repeat a song on command. When you get used to hearing a note over and over again, your ears get adjusted and familiar to the sound. It's just like hearing a song over and over, you'll eventually be able to sing each note without even thinking about it.,

  • Comment removed

  • @RoytonValeAFC Playing by ear is a more common skill then you think ya cunt. Even my nan and her dog can do it..So pleaase shut da fuck up nobody wants to hear u dumb twat!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @Jonah196 hey... I've been playing piano for ten, eleven years and I still can't play by ear. stop assuming things that aren't true.

  • @RoytonValeAFC ...NOPE!

  • @RoytonValeAFC the talent its just the process of the practice

  • Comment removed

  • @RoytonValeAFC before i even didnt know how to play a piano nowdays ive 17 and i play that way by ear for me just was a process pf practice and try to reprecent every noice that i heard it wasnt easy but with the time i start with very simple melodies like 8 or 9 notes but no i can reprecent a song by ear but not so complicated song but try my best and concentrate every time !!!!!!

  • @RoytonValeAFC No, it's actually possible if you really practice hard and get the idea. You do it everyday, just sit at the piano and listen to the various notes, experiment, it'll come. I mean I'm not some prodigy but I'm starting to get it bit by bit.

  • Comment removed

  • @RoytonValeAFC i dunno, seems to work for some ppl who don't have that "natural talent". it comes from experience I hear. I mean I know some who can and they aren't that musically gifted. =D

  • @RoytonValeAFC it is indeed possible, you just have to try. Do yourself a favor and believe in yourself.

  • Comment removed

  • @RoytonValeAFC Not true.

  • Comment removed

  • wow that's really good explained! But i have a question. I'm trying to play Riveside from Agnes Obel by ear, but i'm stuck in the refrain.. On the song, there are 2 voices who sing together, but they sing each something different, and i don't find the right notes. What would you do? And sorry if my english isn't that good, but i'm a Belgian.. Thanx!

  • Wtf, "Still Alive" sounds like Vocaloid songs... Japanese song, just like that!

  • are you autistic?

  • WOW! My friend showed me this song just yesterday!

  • I also play by ear, the only thing i do wrong is that i'm having problem starting on the right tune (if i'm not listening to it right that moment) i use to sit by the piano to improvise to find some chords sounding like a song i've ever heard, then if the chords i'm playing matches with a song i've heard i often pick out the melody for that song and see if they match, only problem is the right FIRST note :/

  • lol Valve... oh yes, I pleh L4D..... when I was six I started playing Piano til 6 yrs l8r my piano teacher died :( so I'm not very..... skilled. but i think you're tutorial will help lots. I've got "Stamp on the Ground" stuck in mah head, and I've got the lyrics part down. that's about it.... yes, my left hand is still waiting for the rest of it.... but like i said, i think your video will help me out a lot! :D

  • This helps me because I'm using garagebandvon ipad and now I'm seeing more on how to break songs into little parts

  • And 'DawgCityClev' I never learned the keys, I figured them out, so shove that up ur ass.

Honestly, I could eat a bowl of alphabet soup and SHIT a better arguement than yours.

  • I love how I tell ppl to stop callin out on me and they continue on, seriously, y'all are prolly a bunch of rich up ur ass brats who think you can do anything and everything, well guess what, a 10 min video isn't gunna meraculously give u the talent to play by ear, not saying u can't TRY. Jeez, y'all need to cool ur heels or something.

  • I've been Playing For 3 Years Is That Long Enough ?

  • hey if i let you hear a song can you tell me what keys it is I think it's d flat scales but i not shore

  • can u really play by ear ??? i dont know how my brother does it .. but he can ,, i try my best .. but i just end up asking him for help ... wish ii could play the piano as well as others ..

  • Okay, currently learning the Pokemon League Theme from Gold/Silver/Crystal... A bit tough if one asks me, but with lots of practice, I'll be able to play it in no time... ^_^

  • your voice is like Kurt's (glee)! that is so awesome! and btw! your tutorial is one of the simplest but best!

  • STILL ALIVE!!!! AWESOME SONG!! :D

  • definately can not teach people to play by ear. you have to just be able to hear things a certain way, like i play by ear in a totally different way to you. the way i break notes up and reformat them. its almost like you're just being arrogant about the fact that you have this gift. but thats probably because you're american. and the quote at the beginning? please.

  • I had learned sakura kiss for piano from ouran hs host club by ear I just had that song Stuck in my head since I listen to it so much I ended up playing ir and everyone loved it and I love the quote you put lol..

  • Before I watched this,my father says I should learn the song You Raise Me Up by Hillsong. But I'm SOOO LAZY to search for it,so I created my own you raise me up song.Since the first sentence is,"When I am down, and oh,my soul so weary."and the sound is up,up,more up,more more up and that is When,I,am,down,i ended up with Bb Bb Eb G,Eb F Eb Eb B A C.That's it!Now I'm gonna learn the other parts. But I didn't know that I was already playing piano by ear! Thanks!

  • Or, one of my favorite quotes, "Give a man a fire, he's warm for a day; Light a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life."

  • Question: Is this video a lie?

Answer: No, THE CAKE IS A LIE!

    Response: ...Was that necessary?

  • I really have no idea how to read notes, but this helped a lot..! I onced played the piano without reading notes but then I had other hobbies until I forgot to play it... With your video, I might learn how to play it again..! Thanks..! [leaves and practices playing BW Elite Four Battle]

  • are you sure you are playing the right notes?

    that sounds fooking awful!!

  • @ufewl some fo the parts you must have thought was awful was the parts he added more to it to make it sound better, but some people want an exact replica and don't car if it sounds better becuase they thinkk that it sounds better the orginal... sometimes thats the case but this man i pure awesome and so is this song, he did a very good job i bet you, and lots of people couldn't do as good as him

  • @hoolahooop ha ha gotcha!! I was just joking really, it sounds fine!!

Actually this video is very good and a help to me. I never considered myself very musical, and a lot of people probably are similar to me. Funny thing is, if someone plays a wrong note you can tell immediately!!

So this playing by ear stuff is possible if you work at it. The only 'piano' I have is on my touch screen mobile phone, only 8 white keys, 7 black, but it usable. Hard to get started though.

  • @hoolahooop I mean like I learned to play 3 blind mice on it, then I forgot it, but had a basic idea, so I could relearn it by ear. A lot harder with something you do not know though.

I just tried a song I did not know and got the first 3 notes right lol, sell sort of, like one note then one lower twice lol. I think I will have to sit down and spend some time on a song and see how far I can get.

I think I would get better with practise, well lets fooking hope so anyway - lol.

  • @ufewl When you get good you should make a video and send me a link, but ya, i don't even have any think with piano so i need to get one becuase i want to start

  • @hoolahooop well I was really pleased when I found I could download free piano application for my mobile phone, it is a great idea, the best application I have for it. You could do a better one on an ipad with it's bigger screen. Also means you can practices pretty much anywhere.

Here is a video of one v=H5bEfkMLO9U.

You can actually use more than 9 keys because you can shift the keyboard along, it is a great idea especially as it is free. Maybe I can post a video of me playing mine lol!!

  • @hoolahooop You can also record what you play and play it back!! it's amazing!! It is worth getting the phone for the piano!!

  • Okk everybody, y'all are callin out on me here like I broke the wheel of your I.H. Seriously, chill out. Wat I said was that playing by ear is a gift, you can't teach someone to HAVE a GIFT. No one taught me how to play by ear, I learned it myself cuz it's A GIFT! I agree that if someone has the gift it can be brought out but anyone with that gift shouldn't need a ten minute video to help them.

  • this is what you call a piano professor (: ....hahaha idk. i really like this video its awesome.

  • do u play by ear? can someone tell me how the hell people play by ear? i can play piano only with sheet music

  • I agree with you to a point. I've been playing by ear for 40 years and the way you pick your starting note assumes that you're playing the song in your head in the right key. Another way is to play along with the song from a CD, for example.

And there's no reason to limit yourself to simple, easy songs. I plan Rick Wakeman and Elton John, myself. That's the fun of playing by ear. You play what you like.

  • I kind of disagree with the don't play by ear unless you can play piano already, because my brother only plays by ear and he's better then a lot of people I know who had lessons.

  • @wickedchick7 Then you should disagree 100%

  • i have a burning passion to play piano like that but i'm only good at playing by ear when it comes to lullabyes or something. ): I'm still trying though!

    thanks for the little lesson (;

  • wow left hand too i wish i had that talent!... but i got my own so i really dont need it

  • wow thats exactly what I do too when I play by ear! Oh except I don't do the optional part yet cos I am not good enough.

go to my channel to listen to piano versions of Fahrenheit(误会) and other songs!

    please support~ =)

  • like the song! ;D

  • How long does it usually take you to learn a song by ear?

What is your advice to someone who can't afford a piano teacher, how should they get started on learning the piano and eventually leading up to playing by ear?

I had my girlfriend teach me how to read notes off of sheet music but she taught me how to do it for singing but i kept forgetting and then when i could remember i tried to apply it to piano but it got kind of confusing when it came to chords.

  • do you think your gifted or that you earned the skill of playing by ear? anyone can answer but i really want pokeguydavid too =D

  • I hope you aren't claiming that you made up the fish saying.

  • Thanks this did help a bit but i actually taught myself how to play the piano and ive been playing by ear the whole time haha.. o yea could u guys check out my video called me singing a song i made up called "Bee sting"

  • wow, thanks, this helped me a lot !

  • Is it ironic that i learnt through the fire and flames by ear?

  • XxSamteRxX- is wrong you have to practice to learn you dont get born knowing the ABC's you learn it!

  • PORTAL!!!

  • thank u :)

  • Good but didn't help much.

It's not how to find a note on the piano that is hard, it's where to start to find that note, you need some kind of sense already to know where is the note, and what about chords? it's even harder, I think you need to know some chords by ear before to start.

I mean I could play note by note all day for a week to learn a song, but this is exactly the problem, I don't want to have to do that, I want to learn a song in a day or two like some folks.

  • 14 ppl dnt even want to learn >:( Your awsome! This helped me alot!

  • Thank you for teaching me how to fish! =P

  • i played self taught for 3 years and mainly started playing by ear its not all that hard. but hearing the different instruments is still kinda difficult. so i disagree with you about having to play 5 years or so to be able to play by ear you just need ears lol.

  • O_o a vocaloid? :3

  • did u play that song on the piano for the first time? O.O

  • haha yep. It actually takes me even less time to do this now. Just the way you are by Bruno Mars? thirty seconds. :P

  • @PokeguyDavid lols i hate you you're soooo good. xD

  • @PokeguyDavid holy shit..I gotta try this hahaha

  • YEAH!!!! I heard that proverb on samurai champloo. Its a good proverb.

  • Portal haha yes!

  • @XxSamteRxX yeah? u can

  • I can try, can't I? :P

  • @XxSamteRxX , Correction : you can't teach them to play by ear well! But you can give someone the initiative they need to discover they do have a gift, or know they don't xD.

  • @XxSamteRxX u can teach those that have the gift but don't know how to use it!

  • @XxSamteRxX its aquired you fuck.

  • actually you CAN. its not as easy as watching a 10 minute video, but with a bit of basic theory knowledge, some playing experience, and time, its pretty easy to figure stuff out. especially on the piano since its one of the easiest instruments to learn.

  • @odin3332 ITS NONSENSE TO SAY PIANO IS ONE OF THE EASIEST INSTRUMENTO TO LEARN.

  • @XxSamteRxX i hate when people says that bullshit. are you about to say that jesus gives you that ability? .

  • @XxSamteRxX I've been taking piano lessons for two years. I've never had an ear for music. When I started I couldn't play anything by ear. But with enough practice and understanding of chords and how they sound I can now play simple songs by ear. Obviously you don't have to be gifted to play by ear. It just takes practice like everything else.

  • @XxSamteRxX actually no it's not. You must learn the keys. That's not given to you. You are not born knowing how to play keys on a piano. And I should know because I play everything by ear as well.

  • @XxSamteRxX :D that's right

  • @XxSamteRxX Dude, that's not even true. I'm sorry to say, very little of any musician's repetoire is real gift, but mindless repetition like what he's teaching. Trust me, I couldn't have played by ear a year ago, but *learning* how to do it has given me this "gift." Sorry if I'm dredging up this thread lol :b

  • @Admergon even though I didn't see the post you're responding to, what you just wrote gives me great hope. Thank you.

  • Don't tell me we don't know how to play piano by ear XDDD

  • song at start hilarious

  • ohmygosh you made my dayyy thank youu!

  • he sounds a bit like adam sevani from step up 2 and 3

  • You're great! Thanks for the help! :)

  • well that's cool. You deserve a cookie XD

  • If you play piano by ear please message me!?

  • Brilliant

  • i love the game (and the song)

  • Yay, Portal!

  • great tutorial.

my main focus is learning to to get the right chords and such, how would i go about learning which notes go good with others to make a chord?

  • That;s usually where experience comes in. That is also why it is nice to have taken piano lessons before you attempt this, but if not, plunck around on the keyboard until you find notes that sound right. It will take longer for you, because it adds an extra step, but the outcome will be the same.

  • WOW...

Thank you a lot for your Video!!! :)

    it really helps

I play keyboard, since 3 years. an i tryed it to play by ear too. And it is only great if you can play it like the real song :)

  • you're welcome

  • Thats a really cool saying but i got one too :

Give a man a match and he will stay warm for the day , Put a man on fire he will stay warm forever .

    Lmao :)

  • haha that's a good one :P

  • woops, i missed the part where you said "dont do this unless you play piano well first...." D: i played by ear since around 6..... i cant read notes at all... OTL

  • Nonono!!! That;s still perfectly fine! Don't give up! The reason that i said that is becuase it's nice to have knowledge of chord structure, time signatures, and keys, which is something that you learn from taking lessons. However, it is possible to do just fine without that, it may be a bit more difficult for you, however.

  • omg thank u so much, i learned alot from this

  • glad i could help

  • It's pronounced Hell.

  • I'm aware of this

  • Thank uuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • ur welcoooooooooooome

  • I've been playing for 5 years ad understood how to play by ear but never totally got it. This helped a lit. Thanks! :)
