  • It is not a samba. He's amazing. He does things I never imagine myself doing. But this "one man marching band" concept would be in service of some research of how samba really sounds... or of what samba is about.

  • This is not samba......maybe rumba or mambo, butt the samba rithym is more complex.....but Terry still kicking ass.

  • that sounds like it is at least 5 ppl

  • You can't even see his hands moving in the beginning. It looks like he's caressing his drums.

  • Awesome drum composition--very musical

  • I have NEVER enjoyed his drumming. People always go on and on about how compex it is, but music should be enjoyable to the ears FIRST. Why try to do complex things if there is no natural flow or feel to it?. Thats just my opinion. Lots of people do not like Bozzio and that is why. A computer could play the most complex music and sounds, BUT does that mean it is GOOD? I appreciate ALL musicians and styles. Terry Bozzio is the only one I speak negativley about. No "natural" flow.

  • @jordanjcm I've never heard of this guy, but it's more than obvious that you just don't appreciate what he is doing. You talk about natural flow as if your definition of it is absolute. Do you think he plays thinking "ok i'm going to play this unnaturally to alienate my listeners"? No you dingbat. Grow up and enjoy things you do, and things you don't at least tolerate with a modest sense of condescension you seem to spew.

  • @Lastscionz I will never "grow up and enjoy things I do not like, and I will speak my mind. Kinda the same way you have done, because you do not like my comment. LOL. You should practice "tolerance" before you preach tolerance. Dingbat. Oh and my definition of "natural flow" is based on MUCH reasearch of the words "natural flow. Now grow up and tolerate other people comments instead of the condensation you seem to spew. Otherwise that makes you a Hypocrite as well as a dingbat

  • @jordanjcm Life is complex, the natural is complex, so your argument have to change.

    Thats just my opinion.

  • mierda parecia que se fue se a combulcionar

  • This is one solo that should inspire creativity in those who recognize genius and anyone w/the audacity to undermine and belittle the accomplishments of Mr. Bozzio should be ashamed of themselves and stop pretending to be experts on musical performance.Terry Bozzio is also humble and a very intelligient person which makes for a great musician/performer.

  • This is drumming at it's best!!! I saw him live. It was fucking amazing.

  • To my mind this is the best drum solo in history.

  • he should like be in a different band than korn .

  • @jarbusrambus120 You might consider looking at his work with Frank Zappa. And he was never IN korn, he just played on the album and did some writing for they stiffed him.

  • i had my doubts... but this video is actually pretty cool

  • poor sound engineer

  • you just gotta love how melodic his playing is

  • If he practices at home with a kit this big it must easily require it's own room!

  • Just when I thought Danny Carey was the end all be all.

Danny, put your sticks down. Mr. Bozzio is going to show you how it's done.

  • 19 people play the "dumb"

  • The man is not a drummer.. He is a percussionist!!

  • @ben2nd care to back that one up? I see him playing drums here...which makes him a drummer.

  • @Kotorious14

    Drums = percussion

  • @kimmin1208 Okay to get technical, that's true. But there's a difference between being a drummer and being a percussionist. Obviously a percussionist specializes in instruments like djembe, congas, cajon, cowbells, and the other 10,000,000 percussion instruments there are. A drummer plays drums and cymbals. Hope my point's been proven.

  • 19 drummers only think drums consist of speed double bass and blast beats....

  • @xxmlhedxx or travis barker and cobus

  • Need audio ..

  • Thats insane !! Timing is unreal... I almost jumped when he finally hit a cymbal at the end.. was he chewing gum during this ? Not human.. must be Reptilian .. just kiddin.. but Frank..hmm?

  • He's my favorite drummer

  • exactly how many arms does this guy have? i wondered as i listened to the audio.

    wow. i watched the video.

  • Wow! That's what you call 4-way independence. It sounds like two drummers at times.

  • for me,it's enought! :]

  • maybe he doesn't know what is a samba

  • @pufinhor maybe you dont understant what hes playing..

  • from 2:04 ... its like an ever-raging train that progressively gets more ominous

  • Terry Bozzio should have tried out for DT

  • I was not a believer at first, but now...

  • I know nothing about drumming but i still know that was amazing

  • Needs more toms

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA, Wayneman! Unless that guy you used to go to church with has a surname like Colaiuta or Weckl, man, you'd better visit your psychiatrist.

  • Wayneman117: First off, this is not really about chops; it's about musicality and composition. And, frankly, I doubt that the guy you went to church with could be better than Terry - in any way - much less "blow" him away. What's his name, and what's he done? A world-class player that we don't know about? Please, enlighten us.

  • that`s because you still dont have the level to understand what he`s playing..

  • if you don´t understand what he´s playing, go and smoke marihuana and then watch the video. He´s not playing drums he´s doing music.

  • damn, that whole time he only hit one cymbal. such a sick melody.

  • at first i didnt understand what it was that terry does in these ostinatos but after watching his master classes on drum channel i realise how amazing and technical what he does is . leading with one hand while playing different permutations

  • there is only one tune , i miss in his portfolio ; it's Edgar Varese's "Ionisation" , the "Black Page 2.0" ....

  • Terry Bozzio is amazing. A real drummer. The first time that I listen a very good Drum solo, It's incredible.

  • Incredible.

  • I have watched a lot of Terry's videos, and from 2:40 on here is among the most fantastic, this is very unreal, and honestly is among the most impressive solo musical pieces i have seen on any instrarments.

  • i want to see bozzio on a custom drums set, he surely sucks

  • the best drummer in the galaxy !!!!!!

  • Damn!!!! I have only 2 legs and 2 hands!!!!!!!!

  • from 2:41 onwards is just .... INSANE.

For fuck sakes... Ostinato combo of 2 feet and 1 hand. So what do we do? Off course, we SOLO OVER IT with the free hand :-O

And as if that wasn't enough... let's switch hands at 3:53 and solo with the left. Off course. Sure. Why not? My answer would be: "because it's freaking IMPOSSIBLE?!?!"

The interdependence and internal clock of this guy is superhuman.

  • @groovingbob He's also retaining dynamic control throughout the entire piece. It wouldn't be half as interesting if he wasn't able to do that. I can imagine that being the aspect that would drive a perfectionist nuts. It's bat shit insanity technically but remains controlled, deliberate, and most importantly emotive. This is certainly up there with the most impressive pieces of drumming I've seen, and possibly THE most. What an artist!

  • @wlmason73 Uhu....

I've been playing for like 15 years now. I don't consider myself great, but I can certainly lay down a nice groove for the band. I went to watch Terry in concert. Just him and his beast of a drumkit.

I left the show feeling like an absolute beginner. It's insane.

  • @groovingbob Compared to Terry, we're all beginners.

  • @groovingbob Well, he was Frank Zappa's drummer for a while if that tells you anything.

  • @groovingbob

u said the right thing ... the internal clock inside this killing machine is superhuman

  • love how he shifts the ostinato from left hand to right hand and gets a different tonal response

  • Terry Bozzio is a solo drum artist! he can rock the kit!

  • hes not a drummer, hes a percussionistt

  • A great example of coordination

  • Absolutely BRILLIANT!!!

  • He should have tried out for Dream Theater. It would have been interesting to see him play some DT songs in his style

  • @irwin3036able Just beause mike mangini is the new dream theater drummer, it doesnt mean we will never see terry play with John or jordan, or anyone, ANYTHING schould go in the music world, thats my opinion, i bet you and many others would like it if drum channel and other artists colaborated more often, we all love fresh music dont we? :D

  • Terry Bozzio is a master composer, not only a drummer. His compositions are amazing. I love your music man.

  • i bui big drum set n Pe0ple acto0oally tink im gud @ drums

  • I'm a brazilian, and it's a shame to see a lot of brazilian comments from whom doesn't know one's own music. This is a samba like those they use to play in Bahia. Actually, this is much more related to the African samba, which became later the Araketu, than the regular Carioca Samba. This is a samba.

  • Wow what an ostinato!!!

  • Love it. I met Terry and interviewed him in 1991. Being alone in a room w/him is intimidating because he is a genius like Billy Cobham. Composer w/ a symphonic drumset. He was very kind & signed my Paiste 20 "ss Bright ride. He is and was a god. Before this type of music I saw him w/ Missing Persons. he manufactured his own electronic drum kit. he does not show off chops he is a is a classical music composer. Greatness!

  • jeez can someone wake me up when we get there please

  • buzz roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Terry is an amazing drummer! this is not real samba, but is a very great performance!

  • Where is the samba ?

  • Damn, that boy musta done sold his soul to the devil to have talent like that. Amazing. But then, sometimes I'm reminded of that episode of "Friends" where Ross had the Casio keyboard...

  • amazing

  • I thought it was sort of boring...

  • @grisfisken THAT'S BECAUSE YOU HAVA A BIG PIECE OF SHIT AS A BRAIN :D ... no ofense

  • @grisfisken You're confused with what your right hand said after sex

  • The Steve Vai on drums! Terry is an amazing player!

  • replay

  • I could make a whole store, a big one, from his kit. Damn... There are more pedals, cymbals, and drums than all the stores of my little town put together... What a freaking coordenation... Just beyond average human beings. How can 9 suckers dislike? It might be a nightmare to tune.

  • @celsorsp

It's actually probably rather easy to do, but time consuming being so many drums. Most of the drums are smaller and therefore easier to tune, as well.

  • Not only is the coordination part insane he is playing everything in key also! Terry is in a league of his own!

  • Thats what i call cordination

  • this is not a drum solo - it's a musical composition...Terry is a genius.

  • @blakesdad38 let me tell u its a drum solo , there is only one drum and nothing else , and yes it is a musical composition as many other drum solos and music in general , and YES he is kind of a genius..

  • @blakesdad38 Anyone can made that kind of sound with hugemongous drumset.

Another stuipd idiot out there who believe himself has taste.

  • @efaxing Not from 2:10 on you idiot.

  • @efaxing I'd like to see you do this. In fact, try one poly-rhythm, or to play this on a kit twice Terry's size. C'mon, dare ya.

  • @blakesdad38

ahh, the times ive whished for santa to give me a kit like terry

but also, if i had gotten the kit i wouldnt know where to start and where to continue

to have a kit bigger than his and know how to play it is my goal in life.

    Use Dax!!!

  • @blakesdad38 no, it's a drum solo

  • The curious thing is that this is not about having a good limb coordination- which obviously he has of plenty. One can identify in his body movement all the voices, whether it is an ostinato or a solo, and even though these segments singularly require some amount of attention, he must perceive and listen to all of them as a whole- much like executing a Bach's fugue- so that YOU, viewer, can have a proper musical experience.

He is making music there. That, my friends, is true artistry!

  • a true percussioninst and you're right UNDERATED I first came across him when he was with Steve Vai then Zappa. It's ashame we got skull banger mongals like Dave Gr...Something...l heading the pop side psychy. Peasents don't know what they're... not just Bozzio, but Mike Portnoy, Manu Kitche, Dave Wickell, etc even the old boy Mitch, Ginger and Moon. Crack up I don't even play the drums just appriciate talent.

  • @Chochili7 i don't get it?! Dave Grohl is a bad drummer, thats what you're saying? Listen to the Them Crooked Vultures-album, and you'll learn he is really good. Like you said, appriciate talent, no matter who plays....

  • Amazing fellow. Tragically underrated.

  • Terry in his Skeletor years.

  • He looks possessed. The good kind, I mean.

  • WHOW!

what a drummer. love his style

  • Damn! I can't even keep 4 drums in tune.

  • @Ultralord1989

    implying he tunes this set.

  • one batucada man

  • very bad style of bass sounding

  • @202drummerboy "very bad style of bass sounding "

I think this is an issue of the recording, rather than an issue with the way his bass drum sounds live. Terry's always liked his drums to ring (ie. have sustain), and this makes recording them really difficult. Engineers like dry-sounding drums, and Terry's are the opposite of that :)

  • He gets a lot of stick (no pun intended) for the scale of his kit - but he's brilliant; drum composition is symphonic, absolute mad genius!

  • He gets a lot of stick (no pun intended) for the scale of his kit - but he's brilliant; drum composition is symphonic, absolute mad genius!

  • its as if the drum is talking

  • absolute technic!!! but where`s the samba?????

  • @88bernardobravo - 2.42

  • @88bernardobravo It starts at 2:41. Footwork baby!

  • @88bernardobravo It's in the bass drum and hi-hat...listen closely

  • @88bernardobravo The entire thing is Samba!

  • @jonnytube1965 "Japanese" Samba you mean haha But it's ok, he's not brazilian so of course i don't want him to play like Kiko Freitas. He's a great drummer nonetheless.

  • FUCKING GENIUS!

  • genius

  • Check out his playing with Frank Zappa.

  • its like a 10 pc timpini as his kit

  • 6:00 says "talk to the hand" lol XD

  • amazing drummer

  • @RriverJJ Yes and thats because hes not a groovy drummer.

  • great solo but it is not a good samba

  • Who.. The fuck.. Has the balls to say this guy sucks..?

  • Comment removed

  • @SMcQuadeDrums I dont think the man who would say such a thing has any.......

  • there's 7 people who realized how small their dicks were while watching this.

  • @dheublein There's one person who has yet to realize how unfunny dislike-bar jokes are!

  • i like this set better seen the big other one

  • Well i dont want to exist any more......

  • Oh my god. He's feeling it, and so do I!

  • The man is a quad-core!!! o.O

  • I'm glad you guys are appreciating this :D :D. I can't believe i see bad comments on ANY of Terry's videos. This man is a SENSATIONAL drummer.

  • I can't believe i see bad comments on ANY of Terry's videos. This man is a SENSATIONAL drummer.

  • Terry Bozzio is brilliant. One of my favorite drummers ever XD

  • I'm surprised with the level of independence on his limbs he doesn't lead with his left hand when going from larger toms to smaller ones. Not saying I can, I'm just surprised.

  • how the f can you practise this "independence" of his limbs? e.g. the part 2:10 - one hand creates the background for the tracj, the other is more like a solo, or 2:40 when his legs do the background theme... how do you practise it? Any film on YT with a lesson, a decade of practise, a drug, a soul sold to the devil? Seriously, how??

  • samba that has nothing! samba really only touched even by Brazilians

  • @bateracrazy Oh please, shut up! If you can't realize the complexity of what you've just heard, then just shut it!

  • brilliant.

  • Wait! Wait! I know... it's a trick! He has a feet brain and a hands brain!

Amazing.... left hand and feet rhythm with right hand syncopation and vice/versa!

I own this tape, but it's so nice to see it here. I just can't get enough!

He's one of those phenomena that just needs to make his statement alone sometimes.

Not that I didn't love seeing him w/Zappa back in The Palladium days!

  • that takes SOOO MUCH four limb independance

  • dude he has way too many stacked up cymbals imagine all th stands fail at the same time he would get killed by all those cymbals

  • @LTdrumma

    I wish he would

  • eh

  • Terry Bozzio can dice, slice, chop AND make Julienne salad....all at the same friggin time...

  • This is probably the best combination of timbre, melodiousness, rhythm and tact I've heard for a drum solo. To be an artist one has to know what to say wth the instrument rather than just merely calisthenicly showing off.

  • @tomestubbs maybe to you.

  • @theSWclan Then show me an example! Back it up!

  • @tomestubbs alright, in my opinion i like this better than samba ousado: Benny Greb Insane Groovy Drums Solo - From His New DvD Language of Drumming

  • @theSWclan Benny Greb is good, thanks for the info.

  • This is probably the best combination of timbre, melodiousness, rhythm and tact I've heard for a drum solo. To be an artist one has to know what to say wth the insturment rather than just merely calisthenicly showing off.

  • Purely stunning! Drumming nirvana. He's playing more with kick, hihat and left hand than most drummers could never aspire to - THEN add right hand "off" signature ostinatos on top and you have absolute genious!! Hmmm... I guess you don't have to play loud dbl bass quadruplets/septuplets up and down the kit for 5 minutes straight to have a drum solo!

  • i'll try to thief him a cymbal or a tom, i want know if he'll note it

  • Bueno, bueno! Aqui si esta perfecto el señor Bozzio. En otras ocasiones es demasiado histrionico, pero en esta ocasion es un virtuoso en su maxima expresion. Bravo!

  • i am brazilian and i know something about our samba grooves. this is a very dificult task to play it properly and wow, Terry have just nailed it to perfection and feel. great performance, great technique!!! insane.

  • I love the effect he gets from the press rolls on the toms!

The two heads in unison, and some vibrato from the natural changes in pitch that come with the technique... almost sounds like a chorus of voices...

  • guys please tell me this concert's name. another old guy was playing in this concert but i can't remember his name. he was a maniac about twin pedal.

  • @selimg81 Old guy? Double bass maniac? Must be Dom Famularo.

  • I started learning drums 2 months ago, this video makes me want to practice 24 hours a day! So inspiring!

  • Unconventional, Ingenius
