Like a lot of of youtube viewers, I'm a music junkie and am into hundreds of bands from the 80's until now...I would describe this as a perfect song, a standard of human creativity, based on the sheer satisfaction it inspires and the fact that this band can do no wrong.
@dragonskankin Okay, let me chime in on the recommendations as well. Ramona and University, as you've already been told, are great. But trust me....ME, Not them, haha....well, all their albums are great...but you seriously want the earlier stuff first. House Tornado is the absolute prime: Kristin in her all-out loony poetess thing, Tanya adding some pop-ier tunes. Great album. And the real, real early stuff can be found on In a Doghouse: "Call me", "Hate my way". That's where you want to start.
@dragonskankin I would start w/ The Real Ramona and Hunkpapa cos they're the most accessible and they're also fantastic albums. Then check out the early stuff. University is the only post-Tanya album I like altho others may disagree.
Awesome. I saw these guys for $6 at First Ave in Minneapolis earlier that year -- I'd never heard much of their stuff, but I was completely hooked by the end of the show. Easily one of the best live acts I've had the good fortune to see.
The genius of Kristin & Co is simply staggering. God, I vividly recall screaming along to this song while driving around the Palouse of Idaho/Washington trying to figure out how to get through grad school. They got me through it. Thanks for posting this epic performance.
Ha ha, Kurt Cobain is in the "Top 100 guitarists" list and she's not? Bullsh*t!! See her live, she should be in the top 20. Not forgetting the rhythm section, of course.
I love how the song completely transforms in the final part. Love the song in its whole anyway... I was so happy when they did play it at this year's Primaverasound festival...
This is the third fantastic performance from the John Stewart show! Man, I wish I was able to watch this show! They should have made a cd for this show. Check out, Collective Soul Goodnight Goodguy and Letters to Cleo Here and Now. All fantastic !
Kristin Hersh, unstoppable force of nature, just as stunningly brilliant in 2009 as in 1995 or 1985. Check out her new tune, Opiates, on her website if you don't believe me. Am I gushing a little too much? Tell me if I get embarrassing, nkay?
@OrangeSFO Blink 182 are better, I'm quite sure, than anything you've ever done in your life. Seriously? They're who you are gonna pick on? At least they're a rock band. And are they, like, flooding the airwaves now? No. And they weren't two years ago when you left your comment. 1997 called. It wants its insults back. Maybe fans of both TM and Blink are rare...but you found one here, pal. ::puts chin up::
actually, Kristin lead all incarnations of Throwing Muses. Tanya wrote and sang lead on a dozen Muses songs, only a few of which i would classify as pop. IMO most of her Muses (and Breeders) output was fairly edgy, especially compared to her later Belly/ solo work.
@thorn35 Where do you get your info from, haha? I mean, no offense, but it's funny how you just make this pronouncement like you know what you're talking about, and you really don't. You should watch that. Just sayin'. It's a good way to end up looking pretty dumb. I'm sorry, I'm not trying to troll. But TM aren't really, like, a super well-known band, so if I were you, I'd figure most people on this page were probably fans, huh? Probably better you not try to school us w/ wrong facts.
I know the Muses are touring in 2009....but I got no indication that Tanya will be a part of it. I've got tickets for the Philadelphia show in march and I've heard nothing of Tanya being there.
nobody who knows kristin has ever called her "difficult". anyway, Throwing Muses lasted 13 years. that's a long time in rock band years.
kristin continues to work with members bernard georges (with her band 50footwave) and david narcizo (he did the artwork for several of her solo albums and also contributed drums).also there's been many TM reunion gigs along with the '03 reunion album. so it isn't like they REALLY broke up anyway.
@Lucem2 It wasn't Kristin who couldn't "keep the band together". It was a band who was ahead of their time and an audience who was not ready for music that was unique, music that was complicated, and words that were emotional and real. The cookie cutter pop world didn't accept that, and the few, amazing fans they had didn't not provide enough revenue for them to keep recording. It's no one's FAULT, except the people that didn't listen to her music.
@dussin23 Is that true what you just said? Throwing Muses are touring again? Kristin has come by here solo a few times, but I think it's been since i was a sprat that there's been an actual Muses tour. I check her page from time to time to see if there's been any such announcements. Last thing I heard about TM was an album being postponed and postponed. Where did you hear what you heard???
@MckyMseNTarotCrds They have a new album that will be out someday, but also, 4AD is going to release a compilation and Hersh says they will tour to support that. I've read it several places and I think (can't remember for sure) she also mentioned it on Twitter.
@dussin23 Oh, that's awesome. I remember her writing how it wasn't financially possible to do a TM tour anymore, but hopefully the compilation buzz will change that. I'll keep my eye out. Thanks!
I never new she was such a solid guitar player. I found this after searching her solo playing me and my charms. Were the muses lumped in with bands like lush and slowdive?
I have to admit it is wonderful to find so many die hard and knowledgeable Muses fans. It was a very lonely existence (musically speaking) living in LA in the 80's and 90's and being a fan of this brilliant band and the Pixies. It seemed that hardly anyone outside of NE or Europe followed them. It is great to see the deserved appreciation grow as the years go bye. Thank you YouTube, Kristen, Tanya and Leslie!
I think Red is Throwing Muses' best album. It doesn't get enough credit for it's throw-down rock and roll because it's fronted by a chick. Unfortunately they were shadowed by suck-ass Grunge
kristin never writes in a linear, spoon-feeding manner, neither lyrically or musically. i have my own take on this this song and am probably wrong, but i reckon that kristin would say that i have understood the song perfectly, regardless. that's why so many love her so.
@JunkyPromise I think like a fair amount of songwriters Kristen writes about whatever she's thinking about at the time. There's a lot going on in this song. "Your tongue is on my shoulder and there's nothing on my brain." Sounds like meaningless sex or sex distracted from sex.
50FootWave has the same bassist as later Throwing Muses, Bernard Georges, but the bands have different drummers. The Muses always had founding member David Narcizo on drums, (his unique style helped define the band's sound), whereas Rob Ahlers is the 50FootWave drummer.
To me she looks like a 90s Joan Beaz

Good point, I hope thats the case.

The fact that she remains married with kids is a positive thing.
