i grew up with soundgarden< chris is a genuis song writer and the band itself is iconic.....great great musicians . burden in my hand is one of his best as is say hello to heaven written for his friend and fellow musician who died early. mad season is another great accomplishment
I love Chris Cornell..... His voice is just so unique, and he is gorgeous! I don't really like the new stuff he's been doing lately but i guess it's good that he's experimenting in other genres.....
i think people give to much atention to the musicians...what's important is the music...what it makes you feel without caring what the song really meant...feel the tune and let it fill you
I fricken worship cornell but we allgive TOO much credit what about kim thayil he practices 10 hours a day and ben shepered is another insane song writer as well as matt ... Fuck off you asshole I never said anything to you im a lil fuckin twelve year old and I got $2900 worth of guitar gear and I dont need some pot smoker to swear at me
What I love about this song is that if Pearl Jam or Alice In Chains had done it (love both bands, btw), it probably would have been really dark and moody. But Soundgarden played it fairly light and upbeat considering it's a song about murdering your significant other.
yea next to Mick Jagger,Chris' lyrics are my favorite....always fit the music, awesome.......all you young people PLEASE don't say anything about Mick Jagger unless its nice,LOL.
yeah, and it's gonna be me. I am so sorry, onechord, but to compare a bunch of yobbos like the rolling stones to soundgarden is almost criminal. Musicianship+lyrics+integrity-wise, soundgarden rules.
Yea I agree with you jonypill42069, for some odd reason Soundgarden doesn't get as much respect and notoriety as those bands you mentioned but they are just as amazing as those. I think the problem was there was just so many amazing bands coming out at the same time and there wasnt enough attention to go around.
I agree completely that Soundgarden never got the same level of respect as some of the other grunge bands. That being said however, Chris personally alway seemed to get top props for his vocals at the same time (most likely because he is simply amazing, go figure). It is strange that the band didn't get the same recognition. No worries though, they all get it in my book. Also yeah, this is a great song from a great band.
Soundgarden rules in every sense of the word. The other big grunge bands (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains) get a lot of recognition and respect, but I don't feel Soundgarden gets as much as it deserves. Not discounting the other three as they're all awesome in their own respects, but Soundgarden had everything a band could ever need. All the instrumentalists are great and Chris' singing and songwriting ability is not easily matched. Soundgarden owns and I wish more people would realize it.
Chris is NOTHING short of a master. I'm 45 years old and have loved everyone from Skynyrd to Pearl Jam . Sound Garden is and ALLWAYS will be the shit!!!
"close your eyes and bow your head i need a little sympathy." "Follow me into the desert as thirsty as you are...crack a smile and cut your mouth and drown in alochol" this dude is notorious for awesome lyrics. Another good one is the day i tried to live
soundgardern= awsomeness made more awsome by a whole lot of mad awsomeness. (i used the word awsome alot but thats because soundgarden rocks me sublimanally, and it would probaly take years to sort out how -dare i say it?-.....awsome, i think this band is.)
Soundgarden is probably one of my top 5 favorite bands from the '90's. Great vocals, guitar, drums, lyrics... My favorite "grunge" band, even though I just think they're a hard rock band from Seatle so they got grouped with grunge. Chris Cornell kicks ass, but he should reunite with Soundgarden... I don't like his weak solo stuff.
His audioslave stuff wasn't too bad, but Soundgarden is definitely better. I think they made a bad decision to put to different styles together. I think the guys from ratm play to much of a rhythmic style and should stick to what they do cuz it's incredibly great without adding chris cornell to it. It becomes jaded and Chris Cornell should definitely stick to Soundgarden, a band he has more control over.
Its a pain to tune to open c but I love playing this song on my acoustic. The cheery melody of the guitar sort of masks the sad tale this song represents which I believe really makes one listen closley to the lyrics. Chris did an awesome job on the vocals on this song by the way. This is my absolute favorite song from these guys I just wish they had continued to write together.
Personally, I think Chris sold out with Audioslave. Audioslave seems to be an every other band, changing with the times. Even with that said, this song is the best of them. I guess I like it because it has some grunge overtones, and Chris gets out of a whisper finally.
Actually it's about beating his girlfriend ("shot my love today"," left her in the sand", lost my head again would you lie for me"). I thought it was about alcohol at first also.
i read some comments that said chris cornell is gay is this true i did not know this and i've followed soundgarden, audioslave, and his solo career and had know idea!
wat happen to chris nowa days man.... he dont do nuttin like this his new shit sounds like fucking horrible pop musicc lik over produced n shit its fucking senceless
In the Soundgarden he was awesome, when he was with the three remaining rage members known as audioslave they were awesome but his new mainstream stuff..his new CD scream? Compare it to this...its just..completely eww..seriously he went..weird..
I'm using the same strings on my guitar as I got day one, but it's still heavy. But I'm using two amps, and not the mediocre pack in ones, just two Peavey's. I also use a vibrating tuner that attaches on the head. At times, I use a jack to connect my guitar to the line-in on my PC and use some software to tune.
detune the low E string 2 whole steps down to c; detune the a string down 1 whole step to G, detune the D string one whole step to C,leave the D string as is, uptune the b string to C, and last you leave the high E as is.
I guess saying it's about finding truth could be a viable interpretation, but the fact is Chris admitted this song was about his long struggle with alcoholism. The desert...is dry...dry as in abstaining from drinking. "follow me into the desert as thirsty as you are..." "i left her in the sand, just a burden in my hand"
The best thing about Soundgarden was their lyrics. They actually wrote about something worthwhile and used their videos to sketch personal struggles with mankind and life.
The breakup of Soundgarden was a huuuggeee mistake, after they left there was no point in watching MTV.
he definitely changed his style a little with audioslave but Cornell will always be a rock god in my eyes.. Soundgarden came out in 1988 i believe, with the album "Ultramega OK" and ever since then i was hooked.. i remember figuring out Kim Thayil guitar riffs note for note as a youngster and damn near crapping my pants!$#@^
I agree with that ,but chris writes alot of the stuff people like (most popular) stuff and him singing that ...Wow.his voice should go down in history like robert plant and stuff ......Although besides chris I think you need a good drummer ,drummers with offbeats and just drum good like dave grohl make a good band a great band.....all in all its a band ,but chris contributes alot...
very true, but i would never take credit away from Kim Thayil! One of my favorite guitarists ever.. as an audio engineer, guitarist, drummer and vocalist, i can honestly say this band taught me alot and is timeless!
This video kicks ass. I agree with the Bush comments below, they're really not that good. I like Candlebox but most of their songs are 60% "Yeah yeah-eeee-yeaah!" Still a good band though.

Question: what is this song really about?
A theory: This song is about alcoholism ("burden in my hand"--a bottle maybe?) and the psychotic fantasies alcoholics sometimes struggle with.
The fantasy, in this case, being: "I shot my love today--will you cry for me?"
Just a theory.
