@ESMbass : D It appears Hans Cousto was carrying forth the polymath tradition after Athanasius Kircher et al. ... all fun things to think about. Thank you!
Was this the way Ben Johnston tuned his piano for his Suite for Microtonal Piano? I'm hearing similarities to the "Alarum", I think it is the use of the 11th harmonic.
@Xoltoath the tuning Johnston used in that piece was an "overtone scale", so, in a way, yes this is the same, but since I'm modulating around, there are more than 12 pitches, so it's not exactly the same. The Tonal Plexus master tuning allows playing in unlimited transposable Just Intonation, with very small amounts of tempering.
interesting concept....i guess it will be quite a challenge for this vision to become acceptable for humans knowing -at least in western society- hardly anyone ever heard music outside the boundaries of the 12 keys per octave paradigm.
like the lego block idea...i am totally for microptones...i think we should use all notes not just a select few...altho we need to work on crating a better style for microtones in western society
other than microtonal applications, I can really see this replacing the pitch wheel of a synth or midi controller for more control in real time. Hmm, very interesting.
It sounds "out of tune" because he's playing pitches that aren't in common 12-tone equal temperament tuning. The pitches you hear are in the overtone series, and the 7th, 11th and 13th overtones do not fit the 12-tone mode at all.
Read about overtone scales, microtonal scales, just intonation, meantone, Arabic music, gamelan and xenharmonic music.

I agree with you... it does sound out of tune.. all these wannabes are probably correct about the tones in between the normal keyboard notes.. But if it sounds like shit I don't care how advanced and scientific it is... It still sounds like shit. Everyone else... stop trying to impress people with how smart your "its beautiful" comments. It sounds like crap and your just trying to pose that you have sophistication!

Well, I suppose Mahler sounds for you (if you know who he was) like a dozen pigs squealing and Beethoven knows not how to knit two motifs together, am I right?
Well then, why don't you go back to your primitive african tribe, where you obviously belong, and jump around a fire or play those huge drums?
LOL Nice Reply, how long did you spend on wikipedia to try to sound intelligent? Its amazing how you popinjays try to puff yourself to fit in with a "sophisticated air". Those who can't...pretend..
Well, contrary to some individuals, I do not use sources like Wikipedia for gaining knowledge. And I don't actually care if having more than you to say on a particular topic pisses you off or not; it's a pity that the only retort you can think of is a purely personal one, insulting, yet containing no relevant information on the subject...
Plus, I really cannot work out, what is it in my reply that you found so 'intelligent', beyond your comprehension - pig, knit, fire or a drum??
Wow, this sound makes me smile !!! It makes me feel so free !!
It is not "out of tune" ! - what is that trying to say ?
To me it only means : to be limited to a simple system - who likes that ? Man I love your work !!!
Did you ever checked the planetmusic concept of Hans Cousto ?
That will fit perfect to your work , I think.

What a great great instrument!
I would love to have this and play around all day.
This is a real cosmical instrument man!

Love it, you use both the available consonance and dissonance well. =)

I hope that isn't the best sound patch that thing can put out, because it's pretty lame.
I do like the harmonic matrices and general tune you're playing though.

It means this thing has more notes than in a normal keyboard. Notes between a half-step interval..

I want one of those too

Nice instrument. It's great to hear all these low ratios!

then, the fundamentals move around, maybe first to 8/9
then definitely landing on 3/2, then 4/3
nice!

then with the fundamentals changing, maybe to a 8/9,
then finding its way to 3/2 fundamental, and 4/3
then back to 1/1 overtones

starts 12-11-10-9-8, overtones, if my ear is correct. One hears the partials locking in! A gorgeous effect! Sounds in-tune to me!

It just sounds out of tune. I'm not getting what's so revolutionary about it.

PROTIP: The human ear can discern more notes than what is on a normal keyboard.
manfuckthisshit 3 years ago 3
where did u pick that up? its proven the average listener can hear pitch differences as small as 500 notes per octave.
uethanian 3 years ago
It's microtonal, that's the whole bloody point.
