Maybe most people who dont care too much about figurative art have negative feelings about it because of their own limitations in the craft of representational art. Even if you want to focus on conceptual art for the rest of your life, just as any craft or art form, the scope of your work is only limited be the range of your skill or this case, mark making.
Every artist so far, even the great ones like Da Vinci and Buonarroti used figures! Wtf are you talking about when saying "FUCK the figure"? You want to draw circles and lines for the rest of you life?! Or you just love anime so much that you can't comprehend the necessity of the human figure in real art?!
@lutobo So what do you suggest he paint instead? His dick?
The figure will never be a waste of time because at the end of the day, human beings are conceited creatures and they love to see themselves reflected in art.
After that comes landscapes as far as popular subjects, especially pretty ones because life's a bitch and people like to escape her cold, heartless ass by going off into a pretty fantasy land, even if it is just brushstrokes on a piece of stretched cotton.
can anybody help me, does oil take a day or so to dry is that normal???? anybody? also what is brand of paint is best for face portraits? and acrylic or oils?
"I wish he would rely less on the photo reference" a very ignorant comment which goes to show that u don't paint? bottom line is that Barber CAN draw and paint from life (with proof) and that is the ultimate test of skill for ANY artist
Considering how hard he works and how well developed his painting style is, I don't think it matters too much that he uses photos. He has a solid understanding of form and light, to the point that he can see "beyond the photo" and pick up the elements that are most important. He shoots the photo references himself and he produces artwork that has more life in it than a lot of artists who never use photos. Barber respects tradition but he's not a slave to it.
@susanhannigan Me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love him, he is my inspiration. All the best !!!!
